RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted October 29, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 29, 2023 Bear here.... A morning mainly consisting of faffing around, including changing no less than 17 19 gadgets that display (or use) time - and that doesn't include four more in Mickey the MG still to do. Some muddlin' was achieved, as well as sorting some stuff that will be required soon; I realised that I'd lost mislaid one of a pair of nickel silver strips 😉 that I'd spent time lovingly shaping (some might even saying "planing"....) one end of. Well I looked everywhere - and when finally out of ideas I glanced across at where the other one was and spotted it: That's definitely a Tick....eventually..... ION..... VHBBW's to @jamie92208 Jamie 🍰🍰 and.... VSBT's to @Dave Hunt following the sad loss of his good Buddies - and wishing Mrs. H a speedy recovery BG 20

RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted October 29, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 29, 2023 (edited) Evenin' each and belated Birthday Greetings to Jamie. Late here today due a rather hectic and splendid weekend. Our party was a huge success and much enjoyed by one and all. There were lots of fireworks but not for us, I suspect somebody nearby was having an early Halloween party. The Boss and I were spoilt rotten and showered with some very generous gifts including the funds for a long weekend break away or similar, a joint present from our offspring, grandchildren, Chris's sister and niece. Multitude of other things including gift vouchers for meals out, garden centres , assorted bottles of falling down liquid and sundry other stuff. We hadn't expected anything like that, we just wanted to get together with everyone after previous celebrations went awry due to Covid lockdowns. It was just great to see some old friends including one who we haven't seen since he moved to Scotland 23 years ago! We're not going to leave it so long until the next time. (We'd all be 98 by then!) One little bit of sadness is that one of our dearest friends didn't turn up. She actually got as far as Epsom on the train from the South Coast but emotions got the better of her. It's just coming up to the second anniversary of her husband's death and would have been his birthday last week. We did wonder if she'd manage it but sadly not this time. We'll leave it for a while then go down to visit her. There's been plenty of rain here today with a couple of sunny spells thrown in. More rain to come tonight I believe. One rugby match watched this afternoon but not the World Cup Final, after hearing that result I couldn't be bothered. Only 3 clocks and two watches needed changing here, can't remember if the car sorts itself out or not. I'll have a look tomorrow. Time to find something to do for the evening that doesn't involve eating, drinking or rugby. Enjoyed what I've had over the past two days but it's time to call a halt....for a day or two. Popular Post Ozexpatriate
What's all this malarkey about changing clocks? 😉 They don't change here for another week. There is a push for permanent daylight saving time on the west coast of the US. It will (literally) take an act of Congress - and is pending on all the states involved agreeing. It is being justified by an increase in adverse health effects when clocks change in the Spring. I think it's a stupid idea. If changing the clocks is 'unhealthy' then leave them on standard time. We already have school children waiting for the bus in the dark. While that might be de rigueur at high latitudes (like Scotland) it's not necessary here at 45°N. Once we get back to standard time it won't be so dark for them. I've been trying to get in an early walk. With daylight saving it's too dark with sunrise not occurring until 7:47am. I'm looking forward to the clocks changing to get an early walk in. 7 1

And also from here. The first day of adjusted daylight hasn't really taken us by surprise. The perils of having a pet on diurnal time with humans on horological time. We have checked and re-checked Dr. SWMBO's travel arrangements. She is off to Montreal on Tuesday by way of an overnight train trip from hereabouts tomorrow. That will be the last train scheduled to run up through Cornwall before some changes to the signalling system which enforce - for reasons probably known to someone somewhere - a ten day shutdown of the line. Backalong you could have done it with pilotment and chaps with flags. Progress? 1 7

Instead we will just inconvenience thousands of people while we faff around - other technical phrases are available, sloshing some paint on the signals and pretending that this will improve the service no end. Me cynical I couldn't possibly comment. 6 3

I haven't posted here for a while as after getting back from holiday in Spain on Monday I got the news that a good friend here in Shropshire had died a few days earlier and an ex-schoolmate had also died while we were away. That kind of knocked the stuffing out of me and then on Thursday Jill went down with a bad cold so all in all I haven't felt up to visiting ERs and haven't been able to catch up with what has been going on. If I haven't replied to something, please forgive me. Very sorry to hear your news Dave. Unfortunately life has a very nasty habit of juxtaposing good and bad experiences, a lesson I learnt when I was still at school. On a brighter note; congratulations and VSBWs to @jamie92208 on another lap of the sun. Keep them coming! ION A lovely autumnal chug to the Danish Camp was had this morning on the little Beeza. It seems to be going very nicely but I do hope I'm not empting fate. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and there was a distinct nip in the air but it was alright, Puppers was in "Thermals" mode. Mrs Puppers says I look like Max Wall when so equipped but fortunately no one else has to observe such a sight as they hidden by the usual proper "bikers leathers" I always wear - dress for the slide, not the ride and all that. And I'm definitely not going to be cold for lack of layers. Unfortunately the sun and blue sky had been replaced by dull, ominous, dark grey clouds when it came to the return journey. In places it had clearly tipped it down very recently, but the first drop of rain wasn't actually felt until I was within about 400 yards of home. So the bike was swiftly deposited in the garage before the Heavens opened. Timed to perfection I'd say. I may have mentioned before, I don't "do" wet on a motorcycle these days. Despite the extra hour in bed last night you find Puppers rather sleepy so I think an early night is called for. Night All! 20

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 29, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 29, 2023 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Tonights dinner was beef casserole with dumplings, very nice. Speaking of food, to avoid Strictly come prancing I switched over to BBC2 and watched Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico. The lady in question was visiting the Mexican state of Veracruz tasting the various local dishes. The principal crops of the region are coffee, bananas and vanilla (which is native to the region). She partook of an interesting meal of chicken cooked in a vanilla sauce followed by banana fritters and vanilla cream for dessert. 14 1

We are right at the point, (close to half-way between* equinox and solstice) where the apparent rate of change of sunset starts to slow down as we approach the solstice. You can visualize this in the analemma - the locus of the apparent position of the sun - at the same (solar) time every day. With today being bright and sunny, the length of the shadows and lower angle of the sun has be quite noticeable to me. * Exactly Halfway is about November 6. The quarter and cross-quarter days are a few days off the celestial observations - All Hallows/All Souls being the cross-quarter day on November 1. 8 8
