Winslow Boy
6 minutes ago, jjb1970 said: I fear this may be a rant, something I'm not given to too often (Mrs JJB looks after the ranting). As I'm sure is normal for many others, Teams and Zoom is now a normal part of work, and working in an international industry like shipping it is if anything used even more as it allows connectivity across the globe, which is good. However Europe is making me more and more cross. There's a bit of an unwritten convention for people in Asia and the US to take turns with the inconvenience and an awareness of time difference. Say what you will about the US but I find that maybe because people in the US know how infuriating it is they consider time zones when requesting meetings. However, many people in Europe (no offence to anyone) expect that all meetings will be in European normal office hours. That's not in itself a problem if it is only a call with Asia or the US as you can manage the time for both people. And people in Asia and the US are grown up enough to appreciate that if you need Asia, Europe and the US on a call then there's not much you can do about time zones. However, more and more I notice people in Brussels especially scheduling calls for the end of their day which means late night for people in East Asia and getting stroppy if requested to change because it inconveniences their schedule. At the risk of sounding cynical they know that people in Japan will get up at any time if necessary, with Korean's not being far off and Chinese expected to work as required so they get away with it. I've had five requests for meetings this week to myself and people in Japan or China to join calls at the end of the business day in Brussels, Paris or London, including Friday. Being English (and also in Singapore, they're very different to Japan and have no problem saying no) I'm the one who has pushed back and suggested they find a slot at a reasonable time and have been met with a few harrumphs at the inconvenience it causes them to avoid someone in Tokyo having to join a call at 11PM on a Friday night. The really bonkers thing is four of five are primarily for their benefit and they are seeking support from Asia. I'll offer some free advice, if you're trying to keep people sweet to get a favour don't annoy them by refusing to show any consideration to time scheduling. Rant off. Sorry. I have noticed that more and more people are taking a 'devil may care' attitude to whether other people are inconvenienced by there actions. Whether this is in there professional life or not. And that when they are told this they resort to hysterics about it. 1 9

Popular Post Ian Abel
Monday... <yawn> An odd weekend... Friday evening the cake eating Oktoberfest dinner went extremely well. The ONLY issue was the cake, in that it "SEEMED" a slice would be perfect. Turned out a slice of that bad boy was overkill. We all regretted it either that evening or the following day <sigh> To add insult to injury, having woken late on Saturday I discovered that the COVID booster received Friday afternoon had decided to treat me to an incredible bout of aches, sore joints and general lethargy. This persisted all day, rendering me unable to participate in the neighborhood party and sent me retiring much earlier than usual! Sunday was better. Still feeling somewhat tired I did manage to replace the front security light and also enjoyed dinner at Jemmas in the evening. Back working furiously today. Weather fast heading on the downhill right to Minnesota autumn/winter with a brisk 5c and sunny first thing, expected high of only 13c later. Carry on. 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 I delivered the car to the garage just before 9 this morning after a very easy drive despite the usual morning traffic. Five minutes later I was on my way home in an Aygo X. I stopped on the way to look at the beach in Whitley Bay and got back in time to do a couple of small jobs before coffee. After coffee I did some more odds and ends and some ironing until lunchtime After lunch I did a bit in the garden by taking out the last of the sweet peas which were dying from the bottom up. Some nasturtiums also bit the dust as they are in the way of wallflowers, violas and bulbs which need planting soon. The rest of the items from the previous car have gone in the bin. I rang the garage while I was having my afternoon cuppa and was told the car was ready so I set out about 16.20 and was there by 16.45. Both dashcams have been fitted and the car cleaned which is good, it was also filled with petrol as compensation for the inconvenience. The journey home was easy even in the tea time traffic, the car did 90.2mpg which isn't bad. The Yaris is a better car than the Aygo X, at least for my needs. During the evening I shall watch 2 quizzes and do a bit of reading. David 19

When updating Mrs W's Yaris we did check out the Aygo X and it was a lot of fun to drive about in but two things we didn't like - only 5 gears so we nearly entered reverse on a motorway as it was in the position of 6th gear on the old Yaris and it was a bit sluggish for motorway overtakes and Mrs W does like a motorway. So we opted for a Yaris Hybrid and it's a great car, without a clutch it feels like we're driving a go-kart, also having to return to my own car sometimes is weird as we have to switch back to our heads back to manual gears, a clutch and a handbrake. 19
Popular Post Grizz
Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy! I’m back to normal…….no wait……scratch that…I’m back to normal for me! 😁 Look no more red and white warning triangle thingy. Big Up to Bear, PhilJ W and The Q for the info and suggestions. It was tracked down to the old work email address I used when I set up my RMWeb account some years ago. I haven’t used it for about three years and forgot about it. I know the email account has been deactivated at some point. Hence a bunch of RMWeb emails have bounced back, and it was a message to me to change my email account to an alternative active one. Job done. Off to the shed for some muddling shortly. Day off tomorrow….although Mrs Grizz might just have other plans for my time. 🙄 20
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 (edited) Three photos I took at Whitley Bay when I stopped on the way home from the garage. I know two of them are very similar views of St Mary's lighthouse on St Mary's Island - but the tide was out so it wasn't an island. I just couldn't decide which I liked best. RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 Ooooh, it got sunny so I went out on the bike after doing the washing. All was good until some altitude was gained on the Tholt-y-Will road - total pea soup moment, quite the thickest fog I have ever ridden in. Downhill road quickly sought. Sun regained. Went out east instead and met up with some mates by chance so had a nice afternoon. We live out on that flat bit, just about where the left hand mirror on the bike is covering. This is the view from the corner known as the Gooseneck on the TT course.
RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 Evening all The Seaweed Wranglers predicted fog today. So we enjoyed a very warm and at times extremely humid day. After a necessary shopping excursion into Penzance we then received the expected delivery of a grass-shortener which will be put to good use dreckly. As the afternoon turned warmer we enjoyed drinks outside before heading off to Sennen Cove for fission chips by the breakers. The shop there is very much better than our local. And so is the view. And then to our favourite sunset-watching spot. Nature provided a superb show as Charles de Gaulle lay on his back in the ocean. Once you see it you can’t un-see it! Finally we headed back to the Distant (Signal) West where the last of the sunset was captured through the cottage window. And that was Moanday. Still plenty of evening left but time to sign off from here. G’night all 24 1

Simplz really or least that's what the housing developer thought. SImple solution is to replace grass with gravel. Queenstown in Tasmania gets 94 inches of rain a year (Google says Manchester gets 32 as a comparison) but the footy oval is always playable because its made of gravel thus never turns to mud. Visiting teams hate it but. 12

RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 We had our pre lunch walk in the park. One of the grassy areas has a lot of tiny trees planted. Some of the previous well intentioned but badly implemented planting hasn’t survived. This does look properly done though. We came back and I spent some time making the contents of my delivery via Royal Mail move and make noises. Described on Hornby Turbomotive thread. I then spent ages updating our travel insurance, as Aditi will soon reach the age where a supplementary payment is required. However you have to answer all the medical questions we did a few months ago again. This takes ages for my list of reportable conditions. We succeeded and can safely travel to Yorkshire now around her birthday. Vienna, Paris or Nice as places to go to have been rejected and replaced by York and Malham. 16

No, no, no, no, no! In my time, I’ve played on crushed ash, blaes and gravel and have the scars and embedded pieces to prove it. And you’re obviously using a different meaning of “playable” from the one I know. 4

RMweb Premium Popular Post The White Rabbit Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 Evening all, Somewhat mixed fortunes today but as I will be following Zebadee's advice shortly, probably best not to think about them too much now. Instead, I'll offer a contribution to the prohibition signs comments. Presumably a set-up but if it makes a few people smile... And then one for 'Typoman', the writer of wrongs. Definitely not a fake, as it was taken by me a few years ago at Starcross while photographing trains at high tide. 4 18

RMweb Gold Popular Post PupCam Posted October 9, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 9, 2023 (edited) Evening All As planned a walk was walked. There are no sea-views from Puppershire (well at least not yet, give it 40 years) but I suppose I shouldn't moan when open countryside like this is ~300 yards from my front door. After the walk was walked a thrash was thrashed. A run out to Old Warden and other local villages was accompanied by the characteristic sound of a small 2 stroke twin working quite hard (well, I'm not as light as I used to be 40 years ago). All went spiffingly until I pulled onto the drive when one pot died due to fuel starvation again ....... PAH! Further investigation revealed that each carb has what appears to be a breather close to the pilot jet and each float chamber has an overflow pipe. Blocking the breather and blowing back up the overflow results in bubbles being blown back up the fuel line into the tap and then one can hear bubbles coming up through the petrol in the tank followed by a cascade of fuel down the fuel line to fill the float chambers. Repeat on second carb, start engine and Ring Ting Ting ....... Seems like I need to remove the fuel tap assembly from the tank and make sure there's no carp intermittently blocking what are relatively small tubes. Trouble is I'll have to find something to drain the tank into first. Maybe tomorrow. Night All Edited October 9, 2023 by PupCam
