Have been here since 8 for field and other tests. Why is there always bright sunshine when I have my pupils dilated? It's the law! Our local eye infirmary has a glass roof in the main area, how thoughtful. Discovered the delights of Primark once having forgotten to bring sunglasses for Mrs W, she staggered in with me leading and we got a rather nice pair for a few pounds. Once her eyes were covered she then went on a spree. 3

RMweb Premium Popular Post jjb1970 Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 27, 2023 Just got back from Bangkok, a very unusual flight. The aircraft was a B787-10 and was almost as immaculate and well presented as the flight crew who looked like they'd walked out of a fashion shoot, so typical Singapore Airlines. However the flight was very bumpy to the point that the seat belt signs stayed on and the crew ordered to remain seated for most of the flight. Cruising at 12000m the aircraft was still below clouds and the sky was very dark (it was the lunchtime departure). Some big lurches on final approach. Don't want many flights like that.

Yet another mediocre night caused by an enforced awakening at 03-58, followed by Snoozybearland proving rather elusive as usual; I got the 'ump just before 5am and gave up. I asked Alexa to cancel the 05-30 alarm, only to be met with "No Alarm has been set" - now I'm pretty sure I did set one, so that's a bit weird. I've learnt not to rely on Alexa alarms when it really matters (if you have a flight, for example) as I'm pretty sure even a brief glitch on the mains supplies will cause it to restart and alarm settings lost. I have given up setting alarms for those important to get up mornings on both Alexa and Google nest. If it is not a morning when I need to get up, they work. If it is vital to be up and about they don't work. I've gone back to my alarm/clock radio - but I have to set it to "bleep" as if the radio comes on I am quite likely to want to stay in bed and listen to it. It's a dry bright fresh morning with a bit of sun but increasing cloud and not much wind. The rain is supposed to arrive mid afternoon and the wind about the same. Gusts here are forecast to reach about 45mph from the south east so it is bound to feel raw and once again everything will be covered in salt. I think it will be the end for the rest of the summer plants. So far I have had breakfast and had a good look in the garage, I am quite pleased with the progress but I must give some thought as to how to move things a bit more to make it easy to reach the control for the garage door and the light switch for the light just inside the door. It isn't urgent, I usually use the remote. I have retrieved the garden bin which was emptied about 08.00 and have given it a clean on the outside. The kitchen has also been given a thorough clean which is why I do not appear to be an early riser here as it needed some extra things doing. In a few minutes I am going out for some fresh air, just to the beach. Then it will probably more moving of things in the garage, I am hoping to find at least some bits I no longer need want to have cluttering up the place. However, like most people, when I throw something out the then very next day I find I need it! David

JRR Tolkien had the concept nailed, such things, called "mathoms", were kept in a "mathom house", indicating how big the storage shed might have to be... 🤔 Edited September 27, 2023 by Hroth The missing "s"... 18
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 27, 2023 The rainfall radar looks pretty grim, the big wet looks like it will be here at any moment. I had a walk to the shop earlier to post a letter and put a few wheelie bins away for the less able folk around us, but not the (young, relatively) lazy gits next door who will leave theirs until they blow over and make a racket, get smashed then they'll want free new ones. Drives me nuts. Used to mow his open plan front lawn when I did ours but he never, ever reciprocated, even when he knew I was ill and unable to walk for three months. RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 27, 2023 Good morning everyone Well thankfully, the visit from Agnes never happened so we woke to blue skies and sunshine, although it’s going a little grey as I’m typing! The plans for today are, if the weather remains dry, to get the last few plants in the ground. If it starts to rain, then I’ll continue working in the cellar. Back later. RMweb Gold Hroth Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 27, 2023 @BSW01 Quote remember amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic Its a bit of a throwaway line, but as I understand the process... The Titanic. Specified by entrepreneurs. Designed by naval architects Costed by accountants (Cheapest rivets and steel!) Built by the working class Used by rich and poor alike Sunk by professionals steaming the ship at full speed into a known icefield. I'd be inclined to blame 1 and 2 for designing a ship with lowered bulkheads so the 1st class didn't have to pass through watertight doors, 3 for choosing the cheapest materials for the hull and 6 for not having any sense at all. The actual builders (4) did the best they could with the materials they were given. 4 2 2

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 27, 2023 Morning all from Estuary-Land. A good nights sleep last night, six hours and only one trip to the bathroom. Only a few minor grumbles from the joints this morning as well. Will be pruning the bottom of the shrubs later but first there's a pile of washing up and clothes washing to do first. Fortunately we are missing storm Agnes entirely, just some cloud and blustery winds.

In the early 1980's I was required for an emergency breakdown on a rig in the Brent Oil field, as it was a Sunday, the quickest way to get me to Aberdeen airport and a Chinook flight out, was to first told to drive to Heathrow, get on a plane to Glasgow and then get on a mail plane to Dyce. There was a storm blowing when I got to Glasgow and once on the mail plane it was a very bumpy ride to Aberdeen, I would have done up my seat belt, but the seat didn't have one fitted, so the pilot told me to sit on the parcels as I'd have less distance to fall. The pilot could talk to me as the door into the cockpit was wedged open with mail, I watched over his shoulder as we came into land, with our nose into the wind we hit the tarmac(quite gently which was surprising) at about 45 degrees to the lights either side of the runway, quite an experience that was. 17 1 2

RMweb Gold Popular Post BoD Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 27, 2023 Afternoon all Back from the eye infirmary and I'm quite pleased. I was there to check up my glaucoma and any deterioration since the last check up has been minimal. It is unusual for there to be no deterioration it is usually either classified as slow deterioration or fast deterioration. Mine is, so far, very slow... and it clouded over, so a light pub lunch was had as a celebration/show of relief/thanksgiving. 14

RMweb Premium The White Rabbit Posted September 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 27, 2023 Speaking of Darwin awards, here is (allegedly!) the list from 2010. It's not just hippos' guts it's best to steer clear of... : Eighth Place In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys. Seventh Place A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran", accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run. Sixth Place While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom when it collapsed, burying him beneath five feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. Fifth Place Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. Fourth Place Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. Third Place After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt. HONOURABLE MENTION Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 A.M. So they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice that the window was closed. RUNNER UP Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more excited, and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located. AND THE WINNER IS.... Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt (Paderborn, Germany) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves.... 'sh*t happens'. So ladies and gents, of the important life lessons you may take away from RMW today - always take care when you are near a constipated elephant... 3 2
