And what do I find when I open up them up? They've all got bluddy holes in the middle Well of course they do if they are proper bagels. If you don't want holes, you want a bialy (originally from Bialystok, Poland). With your lightly toasted bagels you need some schmear. (Cream cheese will do.) Better even is to include lox, capers and red onion. 9 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted April 29, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2023 Good evening everyone Ava had a very productive day in the kitchen this morning, we (I say we, but really Ava did most of the work, I merely measured the ingredients and supervised), made 8 large wholemeal baps, next time we’ll make 12 slightly smaller baps instead. We also finished making the fruit tea loaf I’d left soaking overnight. They were still slightly warm when we each had one for our dinner and I must admit they tasted very nice indeed, in fact Sheila gave Ava a score of 23 out of 10. As can be seen from the photo, we just need to get the sizing a bit more accurate. After dinner we all did a bit of reading and the watched a film, todays choice being an animated film called ‘Frankenweenie’. I didn’t watch it, I carried on reading the book I bought yesterday, which is called ‘A Foreign Field’ by Ben Macintyre, about British soldiers stranded behind enemy lines in WWI. In other news, Ian has bought himself another motorcycle, he now has a Triumph Rocket III Roadster as well as a Yamaha R1. His new bike will be ready for collection on Thursday, apparently he can’t wait. 23

Popular Post pH
Some more from the Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition. I posted before that Deeley was the Harley dealer for the Lower Mainland of BC. Actually, he was eventually the Harley dealer for all of Canada. So, as you would expect, there are a lot of Harley Davidsons in the exhibition. There are more than are pictured below. (As before, if you think any of the information boards are with the wrong bike, please let me know and I'll correct them.) 1) 2) (Bonus shot of Arnie!) 3) 3) 4) 5) 6) 6) 7) 8) 9) Then there are a couple where I missed taking a separate shot of the information board. This one's OK - you can read the the model and year off the information board in the picture. It's a Model F of 1917. 10) This one is the "Harley Davidson 'Nova’ Project". (Thanks to Sidecar Racer for the identification,) 11) 12) Edited April 30, 2023 by pH To add one (very rare) bike I had missed. 19
pH
I’ve been told that a relative was ‘Mentioned in Dispatches’ in WW2. I’ve tried, but can’t find a site which lists MID recipients. Is there one? 3

Popular Post pH
I got a note from a cousin this morning, saying he has found his dad’s WW2 RAF log book, which had gone missing (within the family) due to deaths and moves. My uncle was a regular before the war and served as aircrew in Bomber Command and Transport Command to 1945. My cousin sent me copies of a few pages, which make interesting reading. The book also raises at least one question about received family knowledge! 16 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted April 30, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2023 Good moaning, it got warm yesterday, mid 20's. Veg had to be watered last night. However I had a good expedition to Angouleme and found most of what I wanted. I am now waiting for the boss to appear and decide if we are going to the market or not. So we may go to the market but at some point the hens need mucking out and I may start on the third raised bed. Regards to all. Jamie

Something I always find interesting about Jakarta and Indonesia in general is that there is so little left of Dutch influence. In Singapore and Malaysia you see evidence of the British everywhere, especially in Singapore the language of administration and common language of the country is still English. There are still lots of architectural and cultural reminders. In Indonesia it's really rather difficult to discern much evidence the Dutch were ever in Indonesia. Maybe part of it is that Britain left Malaya and Singapore on the basis of an amicable divorce rather than fighting a rather vicious war to try and hang on. Though even in Vietnam you see much more influences from the French era than you do in Indonesia (despite the US overlay of the 60's and 70's) and the war in Indochina/Vietnam really was vicious. 10 3

Whether or not the quote is literal, It continues to be quite accurate to this day. My flight to New Dehli last night flew over the Hindu Kush this morning, it is about the first time I've flown over the mountains in daylight and enjoyed some lovely views. When I looked out of the windows I couldn't help questioning why anyone would fight there or risk getting sucked into the sort of terrain that neutralises a lot of technological advantages and favours irregular troops with local knowledge. The size of the Hindu Kush is quite remarkable, it's vast, these pics were taken at 41,000ft and some of the mountains didn't look that far below us. It makes the alps looks a bit toy town. 20 3
RMweb Premium Popular Post jjb1970 Posted April 30, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2023 I'm in New Dehli, waiting for the flight to Singapore. The flight was a mirror image of the outbound flight - mediocre flight entertainment, fantastic food, friendly and enthusiastic flight attendants. One of the flight attendants was on the outbound flight, she was surprised to see me so soon going back to India, I guess it's more normal for Brisish people to be seen quickly going back to London rather than back out to Dehli, she was quite enthused when I told her I was heading back to Singapore and seemed very familiar with the city (which shouldn't be much of a surprise given her line of work). A few of my colleagues think I'm being wilfully contrarian but I have really enjoyed my Air India experience so far, it's the best food I've had on an airliner. This was my ride last night.

But what did Wellington have to do with the Peterloo Massacre? From what I’ve read, the blame can be squarely laid at the feet of the local magistrates and the ill-trained and badly led local Yeomanry (at the time basically a middle class/aspiring class militia - which many Mancunians thought a bit of a joke). Why I made the comment about Wellington was that he was a man who had a strong sense of duty and didn’t go for the easy option, didn’t go for what was popular, he did what was (he believed) right. So unlike too many of the politicians of today - a lot of whom wouldn’t (or couldn’t?) agree with a casual comment of “nasty weather, today isn’t it?” without running their reply through a focus group or two and a couple of SPADS…. As for stuffing their snouts in the public trough… well let’s say that there are some politicians* (in practically every country you can name) whose egotistical avarice would make a @polybear’s behaviour when let loose in an “all you can eat, free, cake shop” look like the very model of pious abnegation…. * come to think of it, I might be too generous in giving out the benefit of the doubt….. 4
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted April 30, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2023 Mooring Awl, A night dictated by Ben the I really want out Collie. 02:00 ish I hear him padding up and down the hallway, then I hear his feet on the stairs. On getting up he's hitting his forepaws on the bottom step. On going down stairs he heads for the back door. I let him out he disappears down the garden at high speed. On return I retire to the sofa. At 04:40ish, he comes to me and asks out again. Again disappearing down the garden. Yesterday's work was mostly carried out, baseboard for rotating items , jungle cut back and mown. What didn't work was cutting the plastic for one of the pictures, due to lack of space unmanaged to crack it. So what's left will be cut for a smaller picture, which I'll do on a big work bench at the MRC. Today I'm off to the sailing club, not sure if I'll risk sailing without a gooseneck though.. Time to put some foot wear on. 19

RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted April 30, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2023 (edited) Good morning all, Blue skies and sunshine here. It may cloud over later with the chance of a few spots of rain. 8°C rising to 18°C. Restless night for me with The Hip and Leg waking me occasionally. Very painful when I got up but easing now after walking around a bit and taking some pills. Joe's flight was about 25 minutes late taking off but has now just flown over Hudson Bay and is due back at Heathrow at 13.20.now 13.05. (Hopefully he got on it!) Some rugby watched and enjoyed yesterday and the English Ladies managed another Grand Slam but it was squeaky bum time at the end. Enjoyed Leinster demolishing Toulouse, now wonder if Exeter can win today in La Rochelle but that's a big ask. Nearly time for my usual Sunday breakfast of eggs, bacon and one or two other yet to be decided accompaniments. Have a good one, Bob. RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted April 30, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2023 (edited) Ey up! I have to say I did not miss umpiring yesterday at all. I once I got over the wallet raid yesterday I enjoyed a bit of miniature scenic development and of placing little bits of stone between sleeper.. Youngest Herbert is back into bowling.. 2 more wickets yesterday plus 2nd top score. Today I could watch some cricket but it looks like raining all afternoon (very grey and overcast here at the moment). We decided to have beansnsausages on toast for tea last night. A nice bottle of chianti went down well with it ! @pH my father's log books are in the Imperial War Museum. They may be one of the few crew records of the events at Arnhem. Enjoy the day!
