RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted March 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 27, 2023 In recent years there has been a lot of revisionism to restore the Hurricane to its rightful place in the history of the RAF. There's no doubt that it did serve well. It was easier to build and repair and many pilots said it was an easier aircraft for an average pilot to master than the Spitfire. The problem is that as with a lot of revisionism it is easy to go too far. The Spitfire was a much better aircraft, evidenced by the fact it stayed current with upgrades as a first line fighter until the end of the piston engine era. Mitchell took piston engine fighter design almost as far as it would go, a remarkable achievement for a pre-war design given the technological advances of the war. Willy Messerschmitt achieved the same with the Bf109 though the Spitfire accepted more powerful engines with fewer compromises than the Bf109 and having guns in the wings was useful for carrying a heavier punch than the Bf109. Even though it was harder to manufacture we managed to make over 20000 Spitfires and Seafires, indicating that it wasn't the huge disadvantage some Hurricane advocates claim. Ultimately both aircraft gave superb service. 11
Ozexpatriate
1 hour ago, PhilJ W said: The Hurricane was certainly easier to repair than the Spitfire during the B-o-B because of its construction. 7 minutes ago, jjb1970 said: It was easier to build and repair and many pilots said it was an easier aircraft for an average pilot to master than the Spitfire. The Mk.I Hurricane still had fabric wings. One imagines these were much more repairable than the prestressed metal wings of the Spitfire. Later marks of Hurricanes would have stressed metal wings, beginning in 1939 and by the battle of Britain most of the older wings were replaced. Much of the Hurricane fuselage cladding was doped linen over wooden formers with longitudinal steel tubes in a truss. This was more damage tolerant and repairable than the metal skin of the (semi) monocoque Spitfire. The Hurricane was cheaper and quicker to build (10,300 man hours, versus 15,200 for the Spitfire). 6 2

pH
I’ve just learned something - many migratory birds fly at night. About 90 minutes after sunset, my son and I were outside looking at the planets currently lined up near the moon - at least those still above the horizon. A satellite passed overhead and as we followed it, it passed across a faint white ‘V’ in the sky. The ‘V’ moved quite quickly, changing shape as it went - we realized it was a vee of birds. I googled this (as one does) and apparently night flying by migrating birds is very common: https://www.audubon.org/magazine/september-october-2013/listening-migrating-birds-night-may I did not know! 5 1 11

RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2023 Ey up! Early riser as I have to get Beastie to the garage for a service and MoT at 8am. Wonder who organised that? Then a drcent walk to the bus station to get to the opticians for an eye test. Later I have to attend an on line cricket meeting. Frabjoy! Interesting that the Mossie is rated so highly. My old man said it was a wonderful aircraft to look at and fly in.. interesting to get out of in an emergency, and should have been used en masse rather than Stirlings and Halifaxes. He like the look of the Marauder but it was a deathtrap. For a while the tail sections would detach in flight and, if you lost an engine on take off it was a fast roll into the ground.. not good! I still like the Lightning and, of the 3 V bombers, the Victor was the best.. and, having seen one do a slow roll after take off from wittering..what a plane! Time toget ready for my electric drive into town. Stay safe! Baz

RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2023 Morning. Still koffin. The goo is thicker now, I accept this is TMI. Mrs NHN's work events threw up a surprise, in that the Head of Fleet (no idea what happened to the rest of him😁) came to see her, and explained the changes - and then offered her some choices as to the direction of her future. He had obviously recognised the issues looming with the incompetent nightmare woman, who has been shuffled about also to control her excesses, and gave Debs a choice of merging into that reorganised admin team, or going to be his PA/Management Support for the Senior Management Team. That took milliseconds to decide. She'll lose most of her out and about role that she enjoys currently but this will continue in some ways as the Head (and the rest of him) likes to get out around the wide ranging departments/workshops, so not all bad. In all this was a very good outcome from what would have otherwise been Debs looking for a new job. The Railways managers still want her to work fully for them but they don't have the 'head' for the role currently, if they do in the future then she's a shoe-in for that if she wants. Much relief is apparent. 14

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2023 Moorin Awl, Fell asleep early as the charging cable for my book light failed, and the bedroom lights placing gives not enough illumination to a book. 5.5 hours plus 2.5 hours sleep was had which was a very good total. Ben the I want out Collie was most insistent on patrol, although he cut it short, probably because it's chilly out there, there is frost in the most prone area. He's huddled up in bed at the moment. I too am wrapped up warm on the sofa, I've loaded up the fire, opened the bottom for an air draft but it looks like it's refused and gone out. Ah just cos I said that, flame has appeared. Off to the Radar museum today, https://www.radarmuseum.co.uk/ It the museum guides training day, new handbook, health and safety + all the other required briefings,. Plus giving the place a final clean up. Breakfast and make something for lunch. But first try and find the correct cable for the book light and order it. Standard Usb one end and one of the many little versions the other. Time to surf.

Early drizzle has turned to rain. Big excitement today, as a new headboard for our bed is being delivered. Between 7.44 and 9.44. I hope they will put it upstairs otherwise I will be needing assistance from bigger neighbours. All the wall painting and carpet cleaning was finished yesterday. Actually he was probably the only fan, having another look at it. Oh I dunno. A Bear could get a lot of Cake in one of those. Bear here..... Much pondering and reading on the web last night regarding papering over lining paper - it's usual for the lining paper to go on horizontally rather than vertically in such situations (on a stairwell? FRO) but as Bear wasn't originally planning to paper over the top I didn't do that and the lining paper is vertical. It seems that it's all to do with the paper expanding/contracting/bubbles/seams lifting etc. etc. and other technical stuff that I really don't wanna hear about. After advice from someone on the web that really does know it seems that Bear should be ok just so long as I ensure the paper over the top bridges the seams in the lining paper; what I don't want is for the seams to coincide with each other top & bottom. That's easy, Bear can do that. Oh yes, and use plenty of Goo (ideally not from @New Haven Neil ....) and let the paper soak for "at least" 15+ minutes before hanging. I can do that too. So this morning it'll be another papering session, but this time in the hallway; since none of the drops are longer than 2.3m it's a lot less scary as well. In other news..... The house opposite Bear Towers sold a couple of months back - the new owner (a Leccy, apparently) has yet to move in and is in the process of gutting it, including much knocking down of walls etc. I've lost count of how many Skips they've filled so far - 5 or maybe 6, at £300 a time. Ouch. They've just taken delivery of a truckload of building materials so it looks like they're about to start putting it all back together again. Bear gone. 19
RMweb Gold grandadbob Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2023 (edited) Good morning all, Dull, dismal and has been damp with further outbreaks of rain expected. 7°C up to 10°C - possibly. The Back and Hip are still b#ggered so I'm hobbling about again. Apparently we "need" to visit the local High St today. This is a rare event but I'll see how I feel after breakfast before committing to it. I was born in WGC, my grandparents moved there after being bombed out and that's where Mum & Dad met. . A friend of Grandad worked for DH at Hatfield and gave me a beautiful solid metal (not sure what sort) model of a Mosquito with revolving props. Over time the props got damaged (small child trying to make it fly) and eventually was lost. Wish I still had it. Timetogettamoveon. Avagoodun, Bob. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2023 Good morning from a former pit site. A good day was had yesterday despite the bump on the A64. I had a good time with my brother and played yearns in the garage. This of course was some consultancy work by me to ensure that grandchildren can play Then home to pick Emily up from nursery.sh needed carrying on ly shoulders all the way home. At 3st 7lbs she's not light. Then into Wakefield for a meal with Beth's brothers and their wives. Food wasn't brilliant but a good time was had. It must have been a success as I didn't slot the elder one. This morning I'vedone the 2 dad jobs for our daughter The kick boards have been adjusted in the kitchen and anew piece of shiplap has been put on the garden shed. Brownie points have been earned. It has also been alleged that young Emily can wind her grandad round her little finger.ican't comment. Jamie 6
RMweb Gold Popular Post BoD Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2023 I’m halfway through what must be close to my least favourite of tasks, cleaning the oven and then the hob. Oven door came straight off this morning and things holding inner glass in place loosened easily so that was a plus. Just having a coffee waiting for the gunge stuff to do its job on the inside. Wire shelves and racks to do next. I hate that bit too. Not a good morning. 1
The Lurker
Greetings all from a grey and drizzly LBG where I have a milder version of the cough and cold that NHN has - Elder Lurker has had it for over a week and was off from work with it bt he seems to be recovering. Mind you he went in on Thursday last week but felt so awful he didn't go in on the Friday. Dealing with a 6 year old one-to-one with ASD is not a walk in the park. Still, at the end of the day, you give them back to their parents..... I noticed the proposal of a TFL "superloop" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-65091373 and initially thought that Rick would be having some more bus routes to ride to keep up his completeness levels. Then I noticed that some existing routes are incorporated. And then I noticed that the proposed southeastern route is in fact the route of the 269 already. So perhaps more a rebranding in the hope that they can convince punters that they are doing something to provide an alternative to shelling out on ULEZ than actually providing a new service! 2
