RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 Today is sunny after a very frosty start. It has turned out to be much busier and more expensive that I had expected. I can't say anything about today as I am still busy and the living room is a mess. Yestertday was quite calm, I did the usual house jobs, washing, ironing and so on. Then I went to drop the spare books off at the charity shop which only took a few minutes,. Next I went to see Betty, who lives in the flat next to Mum's, she is 98 and becoming frail. Her only visitors are her carers, family and now and then me. I didn't go last month because of things happening like hospitals so she was very pleased to see me and to tell me all her news. She has been keeeping an eye on the work being done on what was Mum's flat - so far some new radiators, new kitchen and part new bathroom. Now the decorators are there. I can understand the kitchen and bathroom, though I wouldn't have bothered if I'd kept it. I've no idea why they would replace the radiators, unless they want them in different places - they were under the windows. To be honest I don't care, anyone new will want to change things. I stayed for nearly 2 hours quietly chatting and then went home for a late coffee and lunch. In the afternoon I had a very enjopyable walk along the Links and promenade in the glorious sunshine - out of the wind it was almost springlike. Later on it was the usual tea followed by the quizzes and some redaing - and looking at TVs on the web to try to decide what to buy. David
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 Afternoon Awl, Drove into the The Radar Museum, https://www.radarmuseum.co.uk/ . Drove In , in heavy fog, drove out in heavy sunshine. First task, dress a manikin, from a selection of uniforms on the rack. Once I found one that fitted, it put up a great resistance, manikins don't bend like a human. Noticed something with the uniform. The person who it belonged to had the long gong medal, he'd had 15 years of good conduct.... But had never been promoted.. That takes some doing, to get a good conduct medal, but so incompetent so as never to be promoted... After that I helped sort the museums picture collection, it was getting out of hand. So was being simplified, RAF Neatishead yes, radar related, yes, pretty pictures of aircraft, yes but for sale in shop, strange odds and ends no.. Strange odds and end included, the investors in people certificate for RAF Benbecula, a picture of st peters port on Benbecula, an out of date insurance certificate for the museum.. Oh and one of the pictures they found.... Included me, though I wasn't the subject... Taken in 1978. Anyway I got gifted about ten old picture frames for SWMBO to use, in return I've got a frame and picture that needs repair, so I'll glue the frame tomorrow and then fix the backing board in. Next week I've been warned it's paint brush time, I know from overheard discussions they are getting behind, on redecorating. Shortly I'll head half way back to the museum... That'll be the MRC. 21
RMweb Premium polybear Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 14, 2023 (edited) Bear here..... Now if Bear were the parent of this girl then I'd be more than a little bit p1ssed off with the verdict: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-64625539 Diddlysquat this afternoon - apart from scoffin' pink pills and some Ibruprofen gel (no, I didn't scoff that one....). Not sure using both at the same time is quite PC but needs must n' all that.... Bear's cake tonight was a hot cross bun....which doesn't quite feel the same somehow....😒 Especially as Bear is right out of strawberry jam; Marmalade is fine on toast but less so on sarnies and HCB's that haven't been toasted. Mistake. Edited February 14, 2023 by polybear 11
Popular Post Ian Abel
Chewsday and Valentines Day Little to report from yesterday, Mrs went with Meagan and Otis to the Vet and they seemed happy with the recommended ongoing care for him. Not sure why he had the seizure but watching and monitoring, as well as close check on his diabetes. Today will be departing early as we have a regular tradition of a Valentines Dinner at the Como Conservatory, a mini-Kew Gardens place. The dinner is put on as a fund raiser for the conservatory and we're happy to support the place. 2c and overcast retrieving the newspaper, light rain started and a high of 4c expected. Rain tapering off later but supposedly light snow overnight! Carry on. Edited February 14, 2023 by Ian Abel 23
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 @Gwiwer.. you have missed out on an explosion of decent beer in Oz. 4 Pines for example. They taste really nice once you get them above freezing. Squires do some great beers and you can always head for a bottle from coopers.. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 (edited) Evenin' each, DIY stuff has been done and as a result I am aching in places various. The good news is that all that is left to do of that particular job is some painting but that will have to wait until Thursday as tomorrow morning we're visiting son Steve. I had my first beer for over a week this evening as I felt that I deserved it but will then be back on the wagon until the weekend. RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Done my shopping at Tess Coes only to forget something that is vitally important at the moment, tissues. I do have enough for another 24hours but its going to be tight. Also when I got home Si Attica made a surprise attack, co-codamol has been taken and has started taking effect. Time to practice some eyelid inspection.

Given that stomach bugs are doing rounds in Livia's nursery too and that she had it over the weekend as well, I strongly suspect that was the source of all the misery. A suburban middle school had to be closed for a couple of days due to a stomach virus last week. The press reports I saw did not identify a specific strain, other than to say such viruses were common in winter. Hope you are feeling better.

Ozexpatriate
I confess to be a little disappointed this morning. Television weather forecasters were teasing us with promises of 'wintry mix' this morning for about a week now. Last night the forecast had changed to snow showers, but in variable amounts and not very much - promising that it would all melt by noon. It was snowing when I headed upstairs and, though it stopped for a while, it was snowing again when I turned out the light. I wondered if we might at least see enough to cover the landscape first thing this morning. The forecasters got it right. It's doubtful temperatures ever really got below freezing and there was no accumulation on paved surfaces. By the time I headed out for my walk (1°C around 9:00am) what little was there was in full melt. 1

In an earlier incarnation of the forum a "text" edit mode was available and all the formatting tags were visible. It was very handy for that sort of thing. On a software 'upgrade' it was removed, along with the ability to use superscript and subscript characters - for some unknown reason. The preview button is still there. That should show you what a post will look like (on different platforms) before you hit save, but doesn't. Experimenting, the page button (to the right of the menu selections) added the "NEXT PAGE" link (at one time). It shows up in the editor as a line across the page which you can see when published if there is text below. You can get rid of it. RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 14, 2023 Evening all from Estuary-Land. I normally take a few shopping bags with me when I go to Tess Coes. I usually hang those I don't use on the hook on the back of the trolley. This afternoon I realised I must have left them hanging on the trolley when I left the store. Luckily they were old and tatty bags not new ones.
Popular Post woodenhead
So what to do on Valentines Day that avoids restaurants selling fixed menus at eye watering prices. Mrs W said yesterday, today will be sunny, why don't we go to Whitby for some fish and chips. What a good idea, leave booked and off we went. M62 was all fine even within the upgrade works for the already upgraded 'digital' motorway around Leeds, at least with Windows further updates/upgrades don't involve miles of barricading and slow download rates. But the A64 had issues so Mr SatNav diverted us clockwise around York on the A1237 - we did rather get tired of the repeated take the A one thousand two hundred and thirty seven after the 20th time of hearing it. Then, surprise of the day, fog, miles of it east of York, needed lights on in parts before the blue sky appeared just before Whitby. All good, a 2.5 hour journey had become 3 hours, but we were parked up (for free as no parking charges till March) and hunting down a chippy. Unfortunately, Mrs W compares all chippies to one particular one in Lytham and our selection today did not match that expectation, tasted fine to me but she was not happy, a swift IPA in a bar sorted it for her though and after a walk on the beach it was time to head back home. A short stop on the moors to look at the mist (and some pollution as well I think) we were back on the day home, however, this time it took even longer - worse fog around York, massive tailbacks between York and the exit from Leeds so about 4 hours. So basically, 7 and a half hours driving for some fish and chips that did not pass muster and a chicken Nugget 20 sharepack for tea 🤣 But the Valentines present went down well - a rather nice china cup and saucer with gold which she is currently using with her nice tea pot. 14 1
RMweb Premium TheQ Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 14, 2023 Drove to MRC in slight fog and a little darkness. Left the MRC in slightly more fog and a lot of darkness. The darkness extended into the MRC, yep a power cut. On the road back, some areas lots of lights others nothing. One block of houses on an estate lit up , the next all dark. It was mid tea break when it all got dim. Just the emergency lighting on the front and rear doors let us know where we were. Luckily I'd done most of my plans for the night, just some measuring for a small section of unmentionables to bridge a gap left to do. ( Not visible to the punter). Ozexpatriots affliction sounds like Novo virus. The only good thing about it, is it goes away as quickly as it appears. I'm pretty sure norovirus was mentioned on the television news reports regarding the school, but it wasn't in (virtual) print in the online news stories so I didn't suggest it. I recall a reference to "winter vomiting bug" which Google interprets directly as norovirus. Hope the power is back on soon. 4 1

As indeed it often is. A nasty little stomach-turner. Former Neighbour (Upstairs) caught it once. Her flat-mate was down looking for advice and a thermometer because infected neighbour apparently couldn't stop retching once there was nothing left to vomit. For about four days. I suggested calling 111 rather than the neighbour but they preferred the possibility of me being able to actually offer some first-hand TLC. I was probably lucky that it didn't catch me. I spent a good half-hour in very close proximity to infected neighbour including helping to clean her (and her room) up and change her as she was too weak to stand or even sit without being propped up. And this was in days long before we routinely kept face-masks and sanitiser everywhere. She eventually recovered but it took a trip to hospital, a couple of nights in then a couple of weeks of near-complete rest at home. There wasn't anything I could do for her that night beyond checking her vitals and offering moral support and empathy. Once on the road to recovery there were numerous cups of tea and soup - but not chicken she being a vegetarian. RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 14, 2023 (edited) Good evening everyone Well what a day this has been, I hope I don’t have another one like that for a long time! Thankfully the early morning excitement (twas anything but), has proved successful and I’m pleased to say that the rest of the day was a lot calmer. I can report that the carpet on the landing is now almost dry! My visit to the doctors went without a hitch and once I returned home, I changed into my old clothes and went to buy some more valve seals, I picked up another 6 meaning I know have 10 spare in stock. On my way back from the plumbing shop, I thought to myself that it would it might be a good idea to change all the seals in the remaining radiators this summer. Once back home, I cleaned and put away all the tools I’d used earlier on and the put spare seals back in the shed. I then decided to take it easy for the rest of the day. So, I framed a print that I purchased many years ago and has been stored rolled up for probably over 30 years. I u rolled it a few days ago and it’s been stored flat, under some heavy MDF off cuts to flatten it. I bought a frame a couple of weeks ago when I went to IKEA, the frame came with a noun included, unfortunately the mount hid a small part of the text below the print. So I measure and marked out a small section (luckily I had 2 spare mounts) that I then removed. Happily I got it right first time and the print looked great behind it. I then finished off by putting the print in the frame and then adding clips to the back of the frame so it can be fixed to the wall permanently with a couple of screws. It now resides at the bottom of the cellar stairs and I think it looks rather good. Here it is, sorry about all the reflections in the glass, some look like flying saucers!
