RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 Mooring Awl, 3/4 hours sleep, then I woke up still sitting at the computer with mouse in paw. Went down stairs to get muggachoccy and say goodnight to SWMBO and Ben. 3 hours sleep then woke with another possible solution to the spinny thingy brake problem that doesn't twist the shaft when braking. Brain then wouldn't shut up for a loooooooooooooooooooong time. Eventually got some more sleep waking 15 minutes after I would leave for work on a work day. Woke with very cold and painful forepaws, they are just returning to temperature now. Ben the getting desperate Collie, got me out on patrol, dry and cloudy with a hint of the promised easterly with sounds of the sea hitting the beach.. Found that although yesterday's ankle failure is now just stiffness, my right boot is rubbing in places it shouldn't. Much crunching of leaves beneath the feet. Our heating is set to 17.5C, there is no set back over night, it doesn't save much gas because, A, the boiler has to make an immense effort to bring the house back to temperature. B , there is only a 4 or 5 hours difference between SWMBO joining me in bed and me getting up. The living room however is normally at 20-23C due to the stove and how much we have the door open. Currently reading a book on medieval daily life.. it's organised by having each chapter having a different theme, such as castles, Forrest and hunting law, or the life of the ceorls / villeins / surf's. it's a bit odd, though there are just two author's on the cover, many chapters feel like a different writers. In some chapters equivalent prices are compared with today's dollars, in most pounds. Spelling also switches to US occasionally. It claims to be medieval life but appears to be early medieval, only rarely so far has it treated beyond 1300. A real case of the spellchucker disease occurs, with when discussing Bailey in regard to castles being printed barley in many places. Richard the Lionheart is regularly mentioned as Richard the Lionhearted. It's notable the publishers are British based, but the surnames of the authors are not traditional British, and the book is printed in China. So the overall opinion is that no one proof read the book, and it's badly let down by that. Still a bit more to read though. I would be very disappointed had I paid the full £30 price, not £1 on a second hand stall. Plans for today, Fit the new design of brake to the spinny thingy, If the weather has stayed dry mow the jungle Maybe get todo more work on the rudder mould. Ben is giving huffing noises from the doorway. I suspect he wants me to go Cook some bacon.. I agree.. I'm getting hungry. Time roll roll of the sofa... 23

The Lurker
The case Polybear links to really annoys me. People blithely break the law and then make a claim when they get hurt doing it. It reminds me of a case I read in the paper in the 80s or 90s about a burglar who successfully sued a householder for the pain of breaking his leg. He'd fallen over a model railway that was under the window he'd entered the house by. Whatever happened to the doctrine that you bear some responsibility for your own actions; the woman who got stuck in Braford loo and broke her leg trying to climb out, when the loo roll holder she as standing on spun and tipped her off, lost most of her compensation; it was Bradford DC's fault she got locked in but not their fault she chose a very risky way of trying to escape (rather than, say, shouting for help). Somehow the law now follows the case of the woman who spilled yoghurt in Tesco and then injured herself slipping in it (Ward v Tesco Stores IIRC). She won compensation! 3 9
RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2022 Good morning everyone Another dull but dry start to the day here in the northwest corner of England and I hope today goes better than yesterday! So, what have I got planned for today then? Well, as it’s now December the Christmas tree is going up along with the rest of the decorations, although I’m not decorating the tree today, as Ava is helping me with that tomorrow. This will be a first, as I usually do all this on my own, so it will make a pleasant change. So, that’s my day planned out, bak later. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 2, 2022 Morning all from Estuary-Land. I have a smart meter and it appears that my energy supplier has put me on the overnight reduced rate. I usually run the washing machine overnight which I did so a couple of nights ago. On checking the smart meter I found that instead of a blip of about £1 it was about 50p. FYI my energy supplier is Octopus who I've been with for about fifteen years. 15 2

A Multi-quote just to show that I can now that the Google Ad server / Firefox bug combination is no longer relevant to me 😀 But seriously; this sort of thing is one of the reasons that, IMVHO, the UK is going to the Dogs! There is no logical argument to support this sort of claim if successful, particularly when legitimate road users have their vehicles damaged regularly by roads in very poor condition and would get short shrift if a claim was made. I won't be getting the £240 for the replacement alloy wheel for Mrs Puppers Little Red Driving Box damaged beyond use by a humongous pot hole anytime soon! And that is a Gold Standard Rant. In Other News All three mounting holes drilled & tapped and the a trial assemble undertaken. Looking good 😀 Now, onto the next bit! Whilst I'm at this end of the telescope I'm going to give some thought to improving the mounting for the "Flat". The Flat is the little elliptical mirror mounted at 45deg to reflect the converging image rays from the big mirror at the back end out of the side hole out to the eyepiece - it is not fitted in this photograph. On budget telescopes (and perhaps more expensive ones too) the mount uses a central bolt with a spring on it to secure the Flat mount and three equi-spaced screws pressing on the mount in a "Milking Stool" arrangement. This allows the flat to be rotated, moved longitudinally along the tube and for its angle to be adjusted. Unfortunately loosening and adjustment of the 4 screws, however carefully, affects all degrees of freedom and as the mirror position has to be extremely precise to collimate the telescope it's a right pain in the donkey to adjust! I'm going to see if I can improve the mounting / adjustment so that at least some of the degrees of freedom are isolated. WRT the Beeza engine re-build. A friend is going to take my crankshaft t with a good big-end and con-rod to a little engineering company he know next week to see if he can borrow their hydraulic press to remove the flywheels and remove the big-end. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 Another dull and dismal morning but at lest not so cold. Yesterday morning started with a visit to the flat where I happened to see one of the neighbours and had a brief chat. Then it was time to go to church for the usual service, once again it was my turn to act as server. Afterwards I stayed for a coffee and talked to other members of the congregation. I had a short talk with the vicar who has advised me against taking on anything new for the time being, instead suggesting it is time I had a rest after the last few years of caring for Mum and now dealing with her estate. I think I will take his advice. Back at home I drafted some leters which will need sending (or e mailing) once the flat sale is complete to make sure the remaining accounts are settled. Before I send them I will have to take meter readings. I also started on my annual Christmas letter to go with my Christmas cards. I have realised I need to make a new list of who to send them to. Just after lunch a neighbour called to se if I had a few spare Rawlplugs or similar as she had just run out, I have quite a lot so it was not a problem. Then I sat down and fell asleep until it was time for a cup of tea. Once again the evening was reading, TV and music - Mozart this time David

I do layers of cotton stuff and feel much less bulky for the same warmth. Learnt the principle from hillwalkers I use a combination of thin cotton and wool layers. When going out when chilly, I add a thin lightweight fleece or my thicker, heavier fleece. When really cold, I wear both! If I am just out and about and no wind to speak of, I might wear a fleece lined knitted wool hooded jacket with plenty of thin layers underneath, including a bobble hat - to keep the hood up! Looks like Little Red Hiding Hood has turned up with some friends! Off for a ride at Haigh Woodland Park (a few years back). When wearing boots as a hill walker, whatever the weather, I used to wear a pair of thickish short wool socks over knee length socks with the top of the short socks rolled over the top of the boots - keeps stones out, among other things! In the good olde days, my YHA boots had a single skin of leather. My current pair of Brashers are double skinned leather with some techie lining in between. So far I have only needed a single pair of wool socks. My working boots are cheap, & in-the-sale, Dunlop leather boots which have a steel toe cap and a steel sole plate. In the summer, they are fine with a single thin pair of short wool socks - not quite so comfortable in thin cotton socks. A couple of years ago, I treated the boots to some sheepskin wool insoles. Lovely all year round except during this year's heatwave when I had to remove them - feet too hot, boots too tight! In winter, so far, I have found a single pair of long wool socks is enough with the insoles underfoot.* For the hands, I find a thin inner silk glove adds extra warmth to a lined or unlined wool or leather glove - really handy for those outdoor jobs or pastimes. *I did get ribbed about my shiny boots down on the trax when I first turned up in them which gave rise to my working motto: "Shiny loco (deserves) Shiny boots"! Ribbing terminated! But I was smiling as, being kept polished, the leather was never hard, cracked, or soaking up water, oil, grease, ash, coal dust, mud and dirt.... and they are still going strong! Though, I must say, some of my thinking was influenced by (reportedly ;) GWR and Southern** practices in turning out smartly dressed. ** No disrespect meant to others, just not a LMS/LNER "expert"*** on these matters! 🤣 *** Term used very loosely. 😂 Edited December 2, 2022 by southern42

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 Afternoon Awl, That Camembert president cheese 250g is on sale in the UK for £1.99 at occado at the moment.. My rigger boots get mistreated, never polished or treated, I know the tops will still be intact long after the soles have failed... Other shoes and boots do get polished... Mowing cancelled as when I went out this morning it was chuckinitdarn. Spinny thingy frustrating, I can't find the two long Allen keys I have that fit the grub screw rings, without that I can't take it apart to do all the changes.. some work was done though. Rudder surformed a bit more, then offered up to the hull so the top could be marked to fit the hull, at the correct angle. That was then cut, and then the bottom was cut to give a parallel to the hull level. More surforming of that area of the rudder to an aerofoil shape then it on one side was given a surface coat of filler. That's now sitting In front of a fan heater to get it above 15C so it sets.. I'll go out in half an hour to check it. The rudder reduced from just over 2.5 square feet, to 2 sqft which is roughly the target size. It will increase slightly when fibreglassed. I have just ordered a A0 calender undated just before typing this ... The house of strong ladies says, just now, it's been dispatched.. Why the calendar? Because of an event in 7.5 working days. In the future, SWMBO has her events for art and weaving, I will have my events for model railways, sailing, and volunteering at the Radar museum if it's irregular days. Ben has just climbed on the sofa and presented me with his big fishy toy, I think he wants his events on there too. And.. Then there is the list..... Ben has taken me on patrol, between rain showers , it's getting dark again now. He was a good boy and didn't chase the deer that crossed our path. Right ankle is now hot and slightly sore both from rubbing in the boot, and inside the ankle itself. Time for a muggacoffee and a Pink pill. 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 Welcome to Frying Day Upon the Hill of Strawberries where it remains cold and grey. A reasonable day was had at the House of Fun; far fewer people travel on POET'S Day than mid-week and without the weekend trippers who returned through the summer there hasn't been much off-peak traffic either. Ah well. At least we run our trains on time (mostly) when others cannot seem to manage that (mostly). In other news Dr. SWMBO turned the tables on me today. As an officer of the local Habitats and Heritage Committee she was invited to join her colleagues on a tour of all the locations they care for today. If I tell you that the vehicle hired for transport was registered 5 CLT and was driven by its owner ..... ? Routemaster bus RM1005, owned and driven by Sir Lord Peter Hendy, was in its usual fine form according to her photos. Had I been available I could have joined the tour and, along with everyone else, had the opportunity to chat with the recently-ennobled Mr. Hendy, former head honcho of all sorts of things of interest. As he put it himself "When I take my seat in the Lords I shall be the only person there to have driven the number 11 bus past the Palace of Westminster". He will also have been the last; the 11 is being radically altered early next year as TfL seeks to balance its books. Instead of the time-honoured route through Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Fleet Street, St Pauls and the City it will go via Horseferry Road and Lambeth Bridge to Waterloo replacing the long-serving Red Arrow route 507. According to TfL there are already enough buses on the bits left behind. The fact that more than one change will be needed to complete a journey which for around 100 years has been possible on one bus seems to cut no ice. London's transport politics aside Dr. SWMBO reports that Lord Peter was a most affable, warm and friendly chap and a skilled driver. All of which I have to agree with from my own previous meetings with him.
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 Erm, Evri. The local guy, like the Postie, knows just to come through the side gate and leave parcels in the back porch. The Evri guy is good, and always delivers early. He got away without laughing visibly, no doubt to regale his mates in the pub tonight! 🤣 He is both older and fatter than me so hopefully isn't too traumatised. In other news, the OF's ride took us to Peel for brunch and Foxdale for coffee, 49 miles and rather chilly still at that 7c, and technically dry but the air is very damp so wind chill brought that well down. 16 5

Popular Post Ian Abel
POETS, probably give that a go. Yesterday was pretty quiet again as far as work goes, and nothing else notable during the day. Evening saw me attend the pre-rehearsal happy hour and then on to a looonnngggg rehearsal. We finish the "regular" set for the Christmas season with the full choir actually ON TIME! YAY, said we. Then for some inexplicable reason, what was supposed to be a quick run-through of already well known/sung pieces the schola are to perform this coming Sunday at a Reconcilliation service, we managed to squander a full HOUR reviewing them! Shouldn't have taken more than 30 minutes tops <pah>. Result was we didn't get "released" into the great abyss until 2150. Fat chance of getting an evening toddy as the local watering holes close at 2200 on Thursday evenings 😒 Today, not much, the Mrs has a dentist appointment to have a crown fitted, and that's it. Weekend is currently free of planned activities until the 4PM Reconciliation service the schola sing at. Tally ho.

RMweb Premium Popular Post southern42 Posted December 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2022 ' evening all from red dragon land. Sunny and dry all day despite pinecone predictors saying we had drizzle at one point, this afternoon, Not on this patch. I know - I was looking out the window at the time. Mr New Postie popped by with my Calendars. As I opened the front door he was trying to push my things that reside on trax magazine through the letterbox - Uh uh! I had to ask him to withdraw it before it was shredded to pieces! Hopefully, he will leave it in on the porch floor, next time. I am just off to open up and have a look at the Calendars. Sometimes, something will not come out as you expect, but so far, considering the many years I have been doing it, they have been fairly minor things. One problem is gauging the exposure of a print as when you see it on the screen it is all lit up and when in print it can be darker or duller than imagined but family enjoy them so that is the main thing, and I tend to be rather critical when I do things myself especially when it is not quite "right". Sun is setting - a lovely orangey red though the sun is further West now so I had to look way out left to see it. And my alarm warning tells me it is time to get the chicken ready for dinner. Time to put the light on, now, too and, no doubt, the kettle! Polly

If you're inbound to LHR then wave as you come over ... depending upon the wind of course because if it's in the western half of the compass you'll land over Windsor Castle not over the Hill of Strawberries. People ARE talking about aircraft emissions and sometimes they fly around the world to do so. Some influential folk are well aware of the net carbon deficit per passenger air-kilometre. Meetings are also held via electronic means but sometimes you have to do things in person. Steps are being taken on two counts that I am aware of namely to reduce the air-kilometres being flown (which has an impact upon the viability of that industry and the employment of tens of thousands worldwide) and to reduce the carbon-footprint of aircraft by seeking alternative or more efficient fuels (which acknowledges that aviation will remain with us but seeks to benefit as many people as possible through reduced emissions). Much the same is true on a localised scale for any form of transport. Rail is preferred over road and bus over car because they are mass-transit systems generating lower carbon footprints per user-kilometre. Terrestrial transport can be electrified or hydrogen powered neither of which is 100% carbon-neutral and "clean" but both of which are better than burning fossil fuel at point of travel. Aircraft cannot, yet, be powered by anything much other than aviation spirit - AvGas - unless we rely on the wind. Which is neither safe nor reliable enough for commercial use. Alternatives are coming. Who, twenty years ago, would have given serious credence to the idea of petrol and diesel-powered road vehicles being no longer sold (by law) and potentially phased out entirely within the lifetime of some of us here. At least we don't dig up rocks and set fire to them for power any more. Well not very much and not very often. 16

We also found that our WInter Fuel Allowance had been paid - and we then sat down to work out how to spend it - but it had already been largely spent - £280 on two loads of logs, and just under £100 on coal - the balance will need to cover the gas and electric bill increases - so woopiedoo. I wasn't going to watch The Traitors, as I don't normally like shows based on psychology or mind games, but other than the tantrums which some of the competitors threw, I was hooked, and binge watched all three episodes off the iPlayer - it is very well done, and we can't wait for the next three episodes next week. Belated birthday greetings to GDB - and generic greetings to all fellow ERs. Regards to All Stewart Edited December 2, 2022 by 45156 20

One or two of us sometimes do something similar but hopefully not from the same position of being incapacitated through illness and stuck in a chair. Happy Hippo took a few former ER regulars with him to post about all topics including the often-taboo (in here) subject of modelling; many of us cross-post between the topics though content and attitudes will never prove comfortable for all. That's human nature. 14 6 1
