RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 15, 2022 On Italy in WW2, it's generally ignored by most that the Folgore parachute division was one of the finest units in the North Africa theatre and that Italian naval frogmen were very brave and effective. Although most (but not all) Italian combat aircraft were lackluster if compared with German and Allied equivalents they were flown by skilful and brave pilots. The SM.79 torpedo bomber was an effective anti-shipping aircraft despite looking a bit archaic (though less archaic than the mighty Swordfish). 11 3 1

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2022 A fairly early post from me for a change. As usual Friday started with a visit to check the flat, the roofing people have been and done the guttering job, knowing the firm it may be some time before I receive the bill. I checked the temperature in the flat, fortunately when Mum had a new boiler a few years ago she also had the control system updated with a decent thermostat with a display and radiator valves, the heating doesn't need to go on yet to keep it aired and frost free. Then I decided to go and have a look in "The Works", not really intending to buy anything. As I walked around a number of books jumped off the shelves and into my arms - in the end I had to buy a shopping bag to put them in. I decided to park on the Quayside and have a walk along the quay, the old staithes and round the park for a change. On the way round I passed the RNLI (lifeboat) shop which was open so bought some Christmas cards, a calendar, a box of tea bags and other odds and ends which has saved me orderning them from their website. There was a film crew doing some filming but by the time I saw them I had left the shop so I don't know why they were there. Perhaps I should explain that the shops are about 5 minutes walk from the flat and the Quayside a bit less than that. On the way home I called at the Tesco Extra a few minutes from home for some odds and ends I forgot to get with my delivery this week. By now it was coffee time and rest of the morning passed pleasantly working on photos and dealing with e mails. Lunch was chicken, bacon and cheese with veg and then treacle sponge pudding. In the afternoon I fiinished working on photos, cleaned the camera lenses and charged batteries. I also planted some of my new plants in the garden. I had a discussion on the phone with the solicitors about the time probate is taking - they are finding it is now nearer 12 weeks than 10 and a bit longer when there are any changes, such as in my case the change of executor. So I am trying to relax and not worry, it will happen in the fullness of time. I almost wonder if by the time it is sorted out I wil be thinking of having a flat rather than my house! RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2022 Good morning everyone A bright and sunny start to the day here in England’s northwest, but then yesterday started like that and we end d up with rain for most of the afternoon. I will shortly set off to collect ava, who once again is spending the day here with us and it’s going to be busy day too! First ava and I will make a steak and ale stew, which we will have for tea. Then we will make a tray of Parkin, then finish making the fruit tea loaf that I left soaking overnight. The new dishwasher is due to arrive sometime in the afternoon, so, after dinner I will drag out the old dishwasher out, clean the floor area and make sure everything is ready fore the new one. I think I’ll have earned my glass of wine this evening. Back later. Brian 18

I can't find it now. In the days when Mum and Dad got paid weekly on Fridays in the form of cash in wage packets, Mum kept her money in the wardrobe in a box. This was the size of a large biscuit tin, with two layers with several compartments (8, possibly more, each at a guess). Each compartment was topped up weekly: Rent; milkman (milk delivered to the door daily); groceries; clothes; coal or, rather, coke; electric; gas; holidays/days out, etc. If Mum needed more than was in the relevant compartment she would 'borrow' it from another, hence her saying, "robbing Peter to pay Paul." Mum, you could say, was 'bank manager' as she would be the one in charge of the money being at home more often than Dad who worked long hours. So, the idea of a 'bank manager' in the wardrobe may have/has its roots in such traditions. To the present. ' morning all from red dragon land. Sunny but not for long. Some wet stuff promised for this afternoon. Outdoors first thing 8°C. Indoors 18.4°C meaning I have warm(ish) hands. The flute will like that! RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2022 (edited) Good morning all, Lovely sunny start to the day but there may be some showers later. Late on parade here today but I was up early to watch some rugby - England Women in the Rugby World Cup. Good match and very close result. More rugby to watch later. Worrying times for English rugby at present as another club (Wasps) are in dire financial straits and have been suspended from competitions and are going into administration. There are rumours that at least one other club is in trouble as well. After the match I popped out to find a "hole in the wall" to obtain some cash as we're going out tonight to a party and I always like to have cash in reserve "just in case." TBH I almost feel undressed if I haven't got plenty of cash on me. Normally never need it apart from cabs and I pay for everything else by card/phone. Tonight's do is a 60th birthday party for a friend at a local football club in the "Whelking Capital." It's the same place we were going to have our Golden Anniversary do which we rearranged twice and eventually cancelled due to Covid. Time for another muggacoffee. Have a good one, Bob. RMweb Premium Popular Post 45156 Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2022 (edited) Afternoon All Sorry, but skipping has again happened due to "alternative" uses of laptop, and yesterday to moving a number of logs from garage to shed, and also splitting same where needed - should now have enough to see us through to Chr***mas with a little luck. So it is only the usual generic greetings. Yesterday we also visited an antique fair - we are starting to get to know some of the local dealers now, and also some from a bit further afield. So we went back again today, as there were a couple of items which we thought about overnight. That was after the multi jab visit for both of us to our GP - flu in one arm and Pfizer Covid in the other. We did get the bivalent version of the vaccine - and last time, we had less side effect with Pfizer than with Oxford Astra Zennica - so here's hoping. It was very well done - appointments for both of us - 9.00 and 9.20 - arrived at 8.55, and straight in to see Sister Joy, who did the business, and out the side way - over and done for both in two minutes - it took me loger to get my shirt back on. Anyway, off now to fill a few holes left by the plumber when he moved the towel rail. Here's an image of 30747's latest shop fitting acquisition, the counter top display unit, not the large cupboard, which has now been fettled to her satisfaction and filled with suitable threads. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 15, 2022 Talking of Italian military vehicles many British armoured vehicles could go as fast backwards as forwards. We were talking of the Daimler armoured car and the Dingo scout car. Both could be driven backwards in all five gears. There was also a Canadian version of the Dingo called the Lynx some of which were captured by the Italians and copied. 1 1 7

One of her neighbour's has just rung me to check I know it has been done, presumably she wasn't looking out of her window when I was there yesterday. Apparently it took them just under 20 minutes to do the job. I wonder what the bill will be? Yes, I am watching the rugby while I'm doing this. RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2022 No, Phil! Morning...sort of....just about slept the clock around, with the usual regular turn-overs due to standard hip pain, awoke finally to feeling a lot better but still plenty achey. Worst reaction I have ever had to any sort of jab for years, I seem to recall the yellow fever one was a killer back in my sea-dog days. Still tired too. Singapore, yes. Passed through a couple of times, way back, and found it to be very tidy indeed, very busy, and very, very wet later in the afternoons, in fact the heaviest rain I have ever experienced, bar none. Only lasts ten minutes though. Humidity....mad, off the scale. 10
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted October 15, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2022 We are in Enfield. We nearly had to come the “old” way round the North Circular and up the A10 as there were severe delays on the M25. However due our tardiness in departing and I presume efforts by recovery teams the delay was down to a predicted 10 minutes. This all turned out to be about right. We came in the Fiesta today and it doesn’t have SatNav or traffic announcements. We could have used Google en-route but there was no need. We know the way, in fact, lots of ways to Enfield from home. The Fiesta hadn’t had much use recently so we thought a nice trip round the M25 would be a good idea. The car had just had its service and MoT so went well. I don’t wish to upset any residents of North London but the standard of driving in Enfield is terrible. I gave way to allow a car to come from the opposite direction and a following driver overtook me just missing the approaching vehicle. Smart car, not smart driver. 12
