RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted August 3, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2022 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. The hay fever didn't last too long, a couple of sneezes and it was all over. I've spent the last few hours reading a crime novel, haven't finished it yet but it shouldn't take too long as I'm three quarters of the way through.

Essentially yes, but it works just fine and since our other house has one of equal if not older age, we're happen enough. We have all the appliances covered with a maintenance contract that suits us, especially since that contract includes a 70% replacement subsidy IF the item breaks and there are no longer parts to fix it. A good bet for our purposes 😃 Both still works fine, not as efficient as new ones would be, but the main consideration is to replace it now before there ARE problems, and whilst I still work. 14 1
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted August 3, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2022 Not a lot happening here. I didn’t need to go to Braintree clutching a steam iron. I thought I would check everything again. Well on this occasion the lights on the control panel lit up and then a flame and smoke shot out of the cable. The fuse in the plug didn’t blow but the 30amp fuse in the fuse box did. I have shortened the cable away from the damaged area. It all works perfectly. I think the cable storage when a UK plug is fitted probably strains the cable a bit. Anyway I have ordered a new appropriate cable and had a look at the cable connections. It doesn’t look to be a problem. The iron can be used with an extension lead until the longer cable arrives. The 30 amp cartridge fuses on the ring main haven’t ever needed to be replaced before. Fortunately I even knew where the spares were! I am just sitting down after dinner (dal and rice with a couple of samosas) watching the Hundred format cricket on the television. Pom Bears v Hula Hoops tonight from Southampton. Tony 17
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted August 3, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 3, 2022 Evening orl. That hurt. It was OK up until the point the needle hit the bone.....and again......still, it didn't hurt for long. Made I jump though. So much for being 'guided'. Interesting point is the radiologist identified the seat of the problem is calcification of a tendon, that is irritating the bursa. Why this wasn't picked up previously in x-rays, ultrasounds and two years of poking and prodding and twisting, is currently unknown. Touch miffed about that. Still, progress is progress. Thinking about the Bear's shelving rails, my layout in the garage sits on such things to avoid having legs on the front of the boards (storage underneath, motorcycle for the use of). When I fitted the rails I meticulously measured up from the newly cast concrete garage floor. I un-meticulously failed to note the floor had a dip in it.....so does the layout.....pah. It's been like that for 18 years so it can stay that way!

A few days ago we were talking about home improvement television shows. One of the things I find interesting is how they deal with non-square/true floors/walls/ceilings on This Old House. Even with projected laser levels, they use a lot of pencil scribed templates. The most recent show had an interesting segment on some mud room cabinet installation. The floor was not level and they had to account for a retrofitted interior landing that was not on the original plans, that the cabinet doors had to clear.

To be frank, I think they are doing quite well if you end up with the correct number of walls and ceilings. Wanting them to be plumb and true is just being unrealistically optimistic! In Other News Another telephone consultation with the specialist cardio nurse today. I was at last able to relay the joyous news that the big London hospital does at least recognise me now (thanks to me Emailing them a copy of my copy of the referral letter. What's the phrase? Oh yes, "You couldn't make it up". Good job I'm not a blind, 90 year old with no access to "office facilities" and the www!) and I will have my first appointment in November. Shame it will have taken over a year since this course of action was first mooted until the first consultation occurs. Good to know the condition I have is nothing trivial ...... Looking out of the window for the first time in weeks I can see a completely clear (well almost), blue sky. I fancy their might be an opportunity for some star-gazing this evening. I'm itching to take a look at Jupiter and its little friends. Unfortunately it won't be visible to my telescope until about 3:00am. Clearly I won't be seeing that tonight (other than through the bedroom window with a bleary, naked eye when I have to visit the little room sometime in the early hours as per usual!) so I'll have to gaze elsewhere. Right, must be time to think about whipping the old Newtonian out. TTFNQ. Alan Edited August 3, 2022 by PupCam 1

A couple of weeks back I got rid of the frame at long last and I'm now walking with the aid of a pair of crutches. I can get around most of the house now, though stairs are still a challenge. However, today I managed to get down the stairs without going on my bum, though I needed Richard's assistance to steady me as the boot is a bit wobbly on the steps, I no longer have to slide myself along the landing on my bum to get to the stairs at least as I can at least lower myself down now I've regained some strength. I still need to go up the stairs on my bum, pulling myself up backwards though as there is no rail on the left side to grab onto to stabalise myself. I won't be attempting the stairs without Richard being home however as I'm rather anxious about the whole stairs thing! In general I'm doing well and getting there. I know how it is, having been there recently! I got rid of the 'frame, zimmer, walker', and now hobble along with a walking stick. I think I may be stuck like this from now on sadly, but its always good to see others improving. Brian.

Most definitely a Turdycurses moment. I've emailed Crown Paints to ask if the paint colour has a RAL or B.S. paint code so I can get some mixed at the local car place and so dodge the delivery cost. Yes, I was glad to see the back of the damn frame! It transpired that I was discharged with one that was too lightweight for me, no wonder I was having a lot of wobbly moments with it. The crutches are proving much better however. I will probably reduce to one crutch soon enough. I used a stick and mobility scooter before breaking my ankle, so I don't expect to get back perfect mobility, and I expect I'll have a fair degree of stiffness and achiness for a while to come. Not sure when I might be able to operate a clutch pedal again, so driving is out of the question for now! 1

They wanted to add a wing to make it into an ‘L’ shape. They insisted that the contractors could use only the plumbing and levelling tools that would have been in use when the house was built. Contractors were not too keen to begin with, but ended up happy with the result. The old and new parts of the extended house show the same kind of slight variations from true, if you know where to look. pH
A suburb of Vancouver sits on alluvial soil, and care has to be taken when building on it. One big house under construction was having problems, and a company that specializes in levelling up sinking buildings, reinforcing foundations etc. was called in by the owners-to-be. The contractor who was in charge of the remedial work told me that as the house was built up, each new surface had been levelled as appropriate at that time. With the foundations slowly sinking, that meant that no horizontal surface agreed with surfaces above or below it. They company refused to even try to do any work to correct the situation. Their advice was to stop the work, close the site down and sue everybody. 15

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted August 3, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2022 Good evening everyone Well, we never got any rain today and it remained sunny all day, although it was warm, thankfully it wasn’t as hot as it was a few weeks ago. However, as I predicted this morning, we did in deed come back with a car boot load of plants, although, not quite as many as last time we went! But we did enjoy the walk through the gardens, we also managed to do the woodland walk too, which was particularly nice, as it gave us some respite from the sunshine. After we’d done both walks, we stopped at the cafe for a drink before we went to the plant nursery. So once we’d paid for the plants we head d back home and had a late dinner. After which, we then went to Waitrose so some supplies, mainly things we can’t get locally. It was late when we headed back for home, which resulted in yet another late meal. I think after all that, I’m looking forward to spending a bit of time in the workshop tomorrow.
