There's one on the front page of CNN today: CNN: How to stay cool without air conditioning It's not too stupid and actually has useful information like - don't freeze your bed linens like pillow cases. (I have heard of people who do this.) Many of these articles are written by* (and targeted at) millennials online. For people experiencing extreme heat for the first time in their lives, some of these articles might help. Having said that (while my knees are toasty from a charging laptop) "don't charge your telephone" is daft. * Who are also likely assigned the 'puff' pieces. As we saw here during our 47°C heatwave last year, and Portugal and Spain saw this week, extreme heat does kill. RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted July 19, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 19, 2022 Evening all and a happy birthday to Baz. It ain’t half hot, mum. But unlike some others we managed to run trains all day. Mostly to time as well despite a significant heat-buckle on the Down Main Fast near Vauxhall. My years of experience at the Palace of Attendance in Melbourne certainly paid dividends; seeking out corners where a slight breeze could be found, wearing factor-50 and a double-dose of anti-perspirant. Loading electrolyte into the water bottle made a big difference too. More than one customer - and only one manager - asked how I could manage to keep my cool and the usual smile under such conditions. It’s called preparation and professionalism. It was 39C when I left the House of Fun before midday. Shortly afterwards the phone app and the garden thermometer (which is in permanent shade) agreed that the Hill of Strawberries had reached 40C. It climbed slightly higher mid-afternoon but didn’t register 41C. It is now cool enough to reopen the windows and blinds. And there has been some slight rain though it may have turned to steam as it landed. We have two small table-top and one large pedestal fans which will be relieved of duty as we head to bed. Of school facilities I have clear memories. The bog-block was separate from the school house across the yard. The boys urinals had no roof but everything else did. Most of the cubicles lacked a seat; all lacked locks so you sat on the bare porcelain Shanks feet-to-the-door. Definitely not a technique taught at home! The chains seemed to be pretty ineffective when a flush was required but you hung on until you got home if possible. The stench was enough to turn the strongest stomachs and the Bronco provided was hardly conducive to concise wiping. You always got sent to collect enough sheets for the class any time tracing was required. Mind you in our case home meant Izal which was almost as bad. The contrast when I first passed through Singapore Changi airport couldn’t have been greater. Spotless, odourless facilities where you were shown in and presented with a freshly-serviced cubicle by the cleaner. Who then waited outside until you emerged before cleaning everything again before the next use. And on that note it is time to hit the hay. Sleep well. Hopefully better than the last two nights for those in the Great British Summer 19 1 4
RMweb Premium southern42 Posted July 19, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 19, 2022 Back again! Forgot to mention earlier that I did a bit of the G word as in watering the pot plants. Most are now in the shade, at least until about 2pm when the sun comes round, larger plants providing extra cover for smaller ones. A few large pots, and the peony also received a dollop or two of moist bark straight from the bag to try and stop the soil drying out. So a bit of time outdoors before it got too hot and being mostly in the shade was quite pleasant and welcoming. Temp. still 26.2C in dining room, 20.8C in the garden. Hopefully, that means it will be cooler for sleeping, tonight. Till then, I shall do myself a mugasumat.

Which reminds me, you may recall the saga of replacing the broken (combination of poor design and poor material spec?) wires to the Beater Bar saga from sometime back. I checked them the other day and the repair still looks good. Shame everything around it smells of gold fish. Night Awl! 2 12

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted July 19, 2022 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 19, 2022 Good evening everyone As we all know, it’s been a bit warm today, it got up to 37C here this afternoon. I’ve not done much outside today, I loaded up the car with the trucks and chairs for tomorrow’s day out. After tea, the back garden is in the shade, so I watered the garden, as the plants seemed to be suffering. The front ones were done around 8 o’clock this evening, when the sun wasn’t as intense. This evening we lost our internet access for about an hour or so, the computer was connected to the router, but not the internet, so I assume our provider was having troubles due to the heat. Thankfully, all seems ok now. 19

Ozexpatriate
Still warming up here - presently around 30°C with a couple more degrees to go. Shopping is done (sort of) and I enjoyed the air conditioning in the car. The supermarket refrigerator for eggs/yogurt/cheese was non-functional so no yogurt or cheese (on my list) was purchased. I will need them in a couple of days, but may try somewhere else on the way home from an errand tomorrow.
Popular Post monkeysarefun
5 hours ago, polybear said: What did Ringo make of the summer? He acclimatised because Australia is set up for high temperatures - AC prevalent,, shady verandahs around buildings, shop awnings extending across the footpath, cooling tree plantings etc. , Also everyone accepts warmer weather as being part of life here which makes a big difference compared to normally cooler climates like the UK. Here mid 30's is considered comfortable, a nice summers day. 38 degrees, 39 degrees and the low 40's and above would be the kind of days classed as "hot" . 4 or 5 days in a summer will be sh!thouse, so when they do occur you get stuff done early, then head to the beach (coastal temperatures in Sydney/Wollongong region are usually mid-20's even on the hottest days) or close up the house and put the cricket on, then around 5pm wander out and check what needs a watering. I saw news coverage of crowds in Trafalgar Square in yesterdays heat, one thing that stood out to me was the almost total lack of hats. No one here would be outside sitting in the sun without one on in that heat. Even the youngest school kids here know they don't get to go out to play in the playground if they don't have a sun hat on. I have two identical tower fans (branded Better Homes & Gardens); one by where I sit at the confuseromputer and one by my bedroom recliner. I use the remote with the recliner fan but not the other as I have to walk right by it whenever I approach or leave the computer so the switch/button on top works for me.

Ozexpatriate
Now 10:30pm (around 90 minutes after sunset) the ambient air is finally about the same temperature as the inside (~27°C). I've got the fans going downstairs. I'll get the fans going upstairs when the ambient temperature drops a little more. I think it will be some time before the house will be cool enough for sleeping. Overnight is forecast to be clear so the temperature will drop, eventually. More of the same tomorrow. No rain here in the long range forecast. 12
