Years ago electric organs were the thing.  Had all sorts of help at the touch of a button.  They could be played conventionally however and we still a have a Conn two manual from the seventies.  Still play it!🙂

Evening all from Estuary-Land. Mention of the Australian EMU's (not the birds) reminded me of the Q stock used on the District line. During the 50's the Q stock was made up of four different types of stock. Some with clerestories and flat sides and some with the flared sides. The older stock had deep well stuffed cushions (horsehair?) covered with moquette. I also recall the bouncy ride.

Good evening everyone 

 

I managed to get the workshop cleared ready for when Charlie arrived this afternoon. It didn’t take as long as I thought it would, so I then spent a couple of hours in the garden, weeding etc. 

 

Charlie turned up here just after 2 o’clock, but he only stayed for a couple of hours, as he had to be home around 4 o’clock, to get the kids tea ready, as both Vickie and Ian were at work. Anyway, we had a good afternoon and a little more has been done on the DH Tiger Moth, both the wheels and exhaust have been added, leaving just the propeller and top wings as well as the inter wing rigging. 

 

Now, about my musical abilities, I was taught to read music and to play the cornet whilst I was at school in Canada in the late 60’s, but I only did so for 9 months, so my ability to read music was only very basic. In the 70’s, we were given a piano by a neighbour who no longer wanted it. So, with what I could remember about reading music I attempted to teach my self to play it. However, I didn’t know or understand chords, so I needed to know how the tune sounded to be able to play it! Never the less, I got as far as being able to play Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross, from start to finish, from memory. How I wish I could have had lessons, but as a my mum was a single parent bringing up 6 kids, I had no chance. At the same time, I learned to play the side drum whilst I was in the scouts and that really enjoyed that, from there I taught my self to play a set of drums. Once I started my apprenticeship, as soon as got my first pay packet, the first thing I did was put a deposit on a second hand 3 piece drum set. I slowly built this up, into a 5 piece set and played in a couple of bands before I gave up just before Sheila and I married.

Good morning all,

We have some blue sky and there is a glimmer of something appearing through the clouds in the East.  Sunny spells are  forecast with occasional showers later and the chance of the odd rumble of thunder.

Restless night as I was too hot even with the fan running. 

Surgery on my hand is due today and as it's under general anaesthetic nothing to eat or drink apart from water since midnight and nil by mouth from 7.30.  I'm due at the hospital at 09.00 and  (hopefully) third on the list.  Next door neighbour Ali is ferrying me there and back.  It's only a day surgery job so I should be back by tonight.

Hope to report back this evening, I'm guessing I'll be typing with one finger only.

We are not supposed to talk about such things here but overnight there has been interesting news of two by-election results.  It will be all over the news on the radio and TV so I need say no more.

 

There was a programme on Channel 5 last night about the current travails of air travel.  Back in April I flew to Mallorca and back for a short holiday.  It was instructive from the programme to learn how much worse the travelling could have been.  The airline chosen by the travel company was one of those notorious for cancellations.  My heart sank and did not rise very far when the outward flight was altered at the last minute to include an unwelcome fester at Madrid airport.  Neither that nor the TV programme has made me any more keen on flying.  You tend not to get a very good view from an aircraft: oh look, there's a cloud and well I never, there's another.

 

Tonight Spiers and Boden are at The Stables and I shall be there to see and enjoy them.  Who they?  Two erstwhile members of Bellowhead and fine musicians too.

I've seen the pyramids from an aircraft, we didn't land in Egypt.. And an Iceberg in Mid Atlantic...near the equator.. we didn't land there either, we'd not long taken off from Ascension.. So there are the odd things of interest out there. That doesn't make any difference , I'm still not going to fly again...

5.5 hours of poor sleep in the heat, even though the windows were open, 1 hour of good sleep on the sofa..

 

Ben the happy Collie was bouncing around this morning, though with his age the bounces are not what they were.. I know how he feels..

 

Of flights, the first of the morning, has just rumbled by the building .. to Schipol I think,

 

Yet more revisions of rudder design I think have come to a halt, I think there are no more improvements I can make, I know how I'm going to make it, but carving the foam accurately to such a curvy shape will be difficult, 

 

Time to do a customer unit today, from China,  built by us it returns every year for a cal.. See we do make things in the UK.

Greetings from the boring borough. Today is long low and slow BBQ day. 4kg of brisket about to get a good smoking over the next 12-14 hours. The other half of it is slowly curing into what will become Montreal Smoked Meat. (think part way between pastrami and salt beef.) I shall also be cleaning in preparation for double visitors at the end of next week. Although with the latter pair, we are both hoping the flight reductions at Gatwick will result in their flight being cancelled or diverted. I just can't deal with their drama at the moment. 30 years in the past and the ex is still a pain in the nether regions. We are only doing this for the offspring's benefit. 

 

Little else of note. Time to grab a latte and don my bbq apron.

The day turned out to be our first really warm one this 'summer', 26c in places, thoroughly pleasant.

 

The glen was toasty in the evening, with hay fever turned up to 11 for me, however Mrs NHN's devastating form continued much to her surprise, she won with a score close to her PB and beat the guy who is considered the best archer of the group.  New guy Steve also scored a PB and almost made 300, a very respectable score on this difficult circuit.  i was of course nowhere near that.

 

Here's Mrs NHN about to kill a painted target, having just released the arrow.  One day I'll get the arrow in the picture!

It’s a little cooler here too, with quite a bit of cloud cover, the sun may appear later, but if it stays like this, I won’t be complaining. As it’s a Friday, I will shortly be heading off to the butchers for the weekly meat rations and a pork pie for dinner. There is no need for a visit to the Trafford Centre, as I picked up some fruit yesterday, so I may spend a bit of time in the office, followed by some relaxing.

I am feeling old today, my eldest Son  Kieran reaches 18 tomorrow I don't know where the time has gone. Doesn't seem like 2 minutes since I was stuck in the hospital for nearly 40 hours of labour that the Mrs went through before having an emergency C section.

@Winslow Boy Thank for the photo of your DD. My mother had two miniature schnauzers. My Dad really wanted a dog and my mother would only have one that didn’t shed hairs and make the house messy. The first one called Jason wasn’t heroic like his name, but he did become a handy excuse for my Mum not to go anywhere she didn’t want to go after Dad died. She was very upset when Jason died and wasn’t going to have another dog. However her younger brother also had a schnauzer (Scott). Mum’s brother was terminally ill. His partner couldn’t cope with the dog so had it put in kennels. My uncle begged Mum to look after the dog. She wasn’t going to but agreed to visit the kennels. When she saw the state of the dog she took him straightaway and so acquired her second schnauzer.Though initially he didn’t look like one as the kennels had shaved his coat and removed the characteristic beard. Scott lived for many years and was a more interesting dog than Jason. He was more intelligent and lively.
