If you think the books are only going to get pulped  and have no value we discovered that one of our local charity shops (Sue Ryder) like academic books (and cookery books) as they are heavy and they get paid by weight by World of Books.

With so many people using Zoom old books are in demand as a backdrop. I understand that World of books sells them by the metre.

Another option is an Oxfam Bookshop - I tend to find that they sell books at a higher price (good for the charity, not so great for the buyer) as they specialise in books and tend to know their worth more.  Many Charity Shops practically give books away, though sadly I've yet to discover any Wild Swan Muddling Publications sitting on their shelves :sad_mini: - or indeed any of their non-muddling titles AFAICR.

Organic Chemistry as decor ...

Don't forget the monochromatic trend during the pandemic to turn the spines around so what is visible are the pages in a neutral paper colour. The content becomes irrelevant so long as it still looks like a book.

It takes all kinds.

Some online articles suggests that this is done to avoid copyright (presumably this only applies to people intending to profit from images of their bookcases). Seems like a flimsy excuse to rationalize a decorating fad, but I claim no expertise here.

Evening all from Estuary-Land. No sign of Si Attica this evening fortunately. I had a look at the Oxfam bookshop earlier, there's one listed at £8,000! I have plenty of books but most of them are upstairs whereas my computer is downstairs, all that can be seen behind me on Zoom meetings is a pile of boxes. Time to get on now, be back later.

For want of something better to view yesterday afternoon I chose the DVD of "The Commitments".  The film is at least 30 years old but none the worse for that.  It tells the tale of the rise and fall of a Dublin rock band - most amusing without being uproariously funny.  For my viewing pleasure today will be part two of a documentary on Iceland, narrated like so much these days by Alexander Armstrong.  How strange it is that there is such a flurry of stuff on TV about Iceland as soon as my friend has gone to live there.

Much of today wil be devoted to unspecified pottering.  If the TV is on it will be difficult to avoid some of the coverage of the current political situation, which for once is quite interesting.  Discuss, but not here!

Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Hare.

4 hours plus, 1 hour, plus 2 hours, a good total for me.

Novax has lost his appeal, oh good.

Ben the I want out Collie, has taken me out, it's cool rather than chilly, which is good for the setting of the paint applied yesterday.

I stopped on Ben's walk to watch him wandering around, so he turned laid down and started watching me. When I approached him he leapt up and ran past me. Then after a few yards stopped and turn to watch me... Then when I approached he wagged his tail and ran on then stopped again . I think Ben thinks this is funny...

There is a charity book shop in Great Yarmouth we often visit. Shelves and shelves of books @ £1ea covering all subjects. There is just one tiny room with more expensive books, unfortunately most of the railway books are in there. However they aren't hugely expensive, maybe up to a fiver. Unlike the locked glass cabinet with the really valuable books in.

The only place I've found cheap Wild Swan books was at a small show of our hobby. I got half a dozen  at about a fiver each. They were all about the muddling aspects of our hobby rather than the actual real thing.

it's another sanding and painting day today, though there is less to do than yesterday.

Thoughts are now moving onto mast refurbishment, the main things being a new wheel at the top for the main halyard, and the feeding through of new jib and main halyards. This is always fun.... Trying to get a pair of thin strings down a 23ft tube which has mounting screws and rivets in it.

Other than that it's just a few external bits to add and a clean and polish.

Time to think of breakfast and a muggacoffee..

Ben having fun.  Bear happy again

Bear was up at 0630 (I could've done 0600 quite easily).  Better.

Today's fun will start with listing some of the more little-used but invaluable tools I have - such as the collection of small reamers I re-discovered in the Engineer's Tool Chest.  Worth doing as I borrowed a 3/16" reamer from buddy on Thursday night - only for him to give it to me as he had three of them.  He's a Pal.  And then on Friday I discover a collection of similar items in the drawer all along (no idea if there's a 3/16" in that collection - but there is now).  So I recon it's worth having a quick-reference book....

After that I plan to turn thoughts to the construction of a chassis that is split, which will be a first.  In fact constructing one that isn't split would be a first too.  Puppers will be most shocked/impressed/need a lie down/faint/all of the above when he reads that.....

By the way Puppers, how's that plane coming along?

(I keep chasing buddy - he of the 3/16" reamer - to crack on and finish a 5" Gauge steamie he's been constructing for many, many years; he's a rather clever little devil and has made his own boiler, makes masters and castings out of bronze or brass etc. etc. ; it'd be a real shame if it never got finished....).  Sadly it's of  THE WRONG ONE out of the Big Four though.  Oh well.....

TYPOMAN again

My late father, who was a chemistry teacher had got rid of his textbooks after he retired, in his 80's he asked for a copy of Kaye and Laby as a Christmas present.

Good moaning from a chilly, frosty and misty place.  There was thin ice round the hen's water dispenser this morning.

Yesterday was sunny and the ironing got done to the accompaniment  of The Byrds and the Easy Rider soundtrack, all on vinyl. After barrowing some logs down I had a pleasant hour in the shed soldering some MERG kits.  A rissotto was cooked for tea then some more soldering till my finger ends got too cold. Beth and I then watched and enjoyed the last two episodes of Stay Close on Netflix.  Having started with an hour of human sunshine from young Emily that wasn't a bad day.

Breakfast has now been taken and the market beckons.  If some other small tasks get done I may be able to continue soldering.

Regards to all.

Well known in Oz. One might apply it to the remaining smear of Vegemite on the inside walls of an almost empty jar, or any very small portion of food.

And there is “not a skerrick of moisture” on a cricket pitch nor is there a “skerrick of truth” in certain allegations …..

Good morning. Welcome to dull grey Sun-less-day Upon the Hill of Strawberries.

There are no plans for today.

Good morning all,

Rather dull here and quite mild at 7°C.  It will stay mainly cloudy with the chance of the odd brighter spell and there may be some rain by the evening.

I'm a bit late on parade due to a late night/early morning watching watching recorded rugby.  Still got two games to watch and there's another two this afternoon!  Do I get fed up with watching rugby?  No.

Wasn't quite as successful as Baz on the lottery but I did get back £10 and two lucky dips.

The Boss brought me tea in bed at 8.00 and said "If you want a cooked breakfast you better get a move on because I've got a lot to do today!"  Needless to say I replied meekly "Yes dear" and complied.

Steve's coming round for lunch today and to help me with my photo sorting problem on this laptop.  In a mess it has got!  I've also got a query on my antivirus software which I'm sure he will sort in seconds.

Tonight's meal has just gone in the slow cooker - Lamb shanks which have been marinated overnight and are being cooked in a red wine and redcurrant sauce.   Looking forward to that.

Time for another coffee.

Have a good one,

Bob.
