The full account of the Battle of Samar is in "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". (I don't know if that's the book.) 1
Popular Post andyram
Evening all. I hope everyone is well. As of a couple of hours ago, I have completed the 46th circuit of the big orange ball. A interesting book on the Isle of Wight Railways was received from my parents who are well aware of my interest in this particular rail network. Judging by the pre-orders received for the Island versions of the EFE Rail 02’s, I am not alone. It looks like I will be busy wrapping a few of these when they arrive early in the week. Still some left and there may be one that somehow becomes a shop demonstration model ahead of joining my own collection.

Ozexpatriate
I can see little puffy clouds! And blue sky. Hooray! The smoke is gone. My son informed me that the ABBA song Chiquitita (click at your peril* and isn't that snowman creepy?) is currently featuring on myriad TikTok videos. I couldn't place it exactly and I searched for ABBA songs, and sure enough Chiquitita is the first listed, rather than Dancing Queen, which you would normally expect. The internet (and in particular TikTok) is indeed a strange place. * I had a dreadful earworm this morning. This conversation came up when I mentioned that Stevie Nicks had cancelled a concert tour due to CoViD concerns. My son told me that Stevie Nicks now has some sort of Goddess status amongst Gen-Z - perhaps influenced by a viral TikTok using the incongruous combination of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams, skateboarding and cranberry juice.

Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all, with belated birthday greetings to Andyram. That ruddy virus keeps on giving. The latest sting in its tail is the news that those attending certain society meetings will have to have their temperatures taken at the door. I am sure that this is meant kindly but I do not recall being subjected to this when I visited my aunt in her care home two weeks ago. Meanwhile, my propensity for untidiness has come back to bite me yet again. I have mislaid my tickets for two forthcoming and much postponed concerts. Rather than keep turning the house upside down looking for them I will have to contact the box office for advice. Oh, the shame. A few interesting things are due to occur this week. On Tuesday members of the Bedford branch of the LCGB will be visiting Corby. They will be travelling on one of the second-hand electric trains that replaced the Midland Main Line trains which used to call at Bedford on their way to Kettering and beyond. It will be my first trip on a train in well over a year. On Wednesday Chilterns Area Group will be meeting via Zoom to discuss among other things where and how it should meet in future. The group counts among its members some fine m*d*ll*rs who are bound to have been more productive than yours truly. Thursday is to be the day when Professor Oncologist tells me what was found in my recent bone scan. Other events may pop up when I least expect them. Best wishes to all Chris 1 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted August 16, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 16, 2021 Ey up! Looks like a gardening day lies ahead of me today. PAH! Although I could clean Beastie and apply some TLC to him.. not sure what will happen yet. Leeds roads are in chaos again. Major gas pipe installation work, council laying tar and chippings (to refresh the road surface) etc are making travel difficult. Normally everyone would be away.. but not this year. I have a Committee meeting to attend tonight. It will probably be all about an Exhibiin October. Keep well! Hope our "missing" ERs are safe and well. And to wish Andy a happy birthday In other news: Awake at Stupid o'clock and was tempted to get up and fire up the PC and I had the next idea in the quest to solve the software problem with the little WiFi module for the unmemtionable controller. Development work on it has been "intense" over the weekend with huge amounts of additional debugging code added to the open source WiFi library code in order to track down the problem. At least I can see where things are happening now and I'm getting a bit of a handle on it (I think it's a corrupted ring buffer but why? If you haven't nodded off ......) Anyway, have a good day everyone. Alan Edited August 16, 2021 by PupCam 17 1 1
Popular Post Sir TophamHatt
Good morning all. Been a busy few weeks for me. Doing nothing particular, just work and cleaning around the house. Had my 2nd jab yesterday. Not sure I understand why people don't want to have it. If anyone can tell me how a liquid is supposed to "track" people... unless they think a microchip is inserted at the same time? But then it won't have power so can only be "read" by something. Where are all these "readers" going to be? Far too much thinking for me to bother with. 8
The Lurker
Greetings all from a Sidcup where the promising early blue skies have been replaced with a hazy cloud layer. Happy birthday for yesterday to Andyram. Back to work today with a long list of stuff to do that I would rather not and a few meetings where there will be a lot of talk and people will ask me what I think should be done; to which I will answer that they need to obtain the information that I have been asking for over the course of the past few weeks which they have not provided. I predict we will be having the same meeting in a couple of weeks time. The weekend was quiet - probably I did not use it wisely although I did use the Friday to deal with some chores. Anyway, back to some work now. 12 1

All that money spent on training the Afghan national army and they run away. The U S Embassy looked like Saigon in 1975 with fires on the lawns and Helicopters taking off from the compound. One smells corruption running rife in the ANA Won't say anything more because it will be too political It didn't even occur to Bear that my OP could be regarded as P*****cal - it was more intended as having a humanitarian and a "what complete f****** waste" kinda post. Apologies if I've crossed the line, though Awls have yet to be spotted on Radar. Extra security around the cake store has been posted, just in case. 7 hours ago, Erichill16 said: I was hoping to get an invite to his shed so I can run something than runs on parallel strips of metal with a bit of DCC but it wasn’t forthcoming. Rover Montego (bad decision but cheap; BAe staff discount) I never known anyone brave enough to admit to buying a Montego before. Respect..... We used (mid 80's) to get them a lot as company hire cars. Bear's first ever company jolly was to BAe Warton/Lytham St. Annes in Dec 1985 with JC and Kev driving. 'Orrible smell for many, many miles - with much finger pointing and "was that you?" comments made. So in the dark, fast lane of the M1 (or M6?), raining stair rods, Kev driving at a ton+ (he was a mad, mad b'steward) and the radio goes off. Then the wipers pack up, followed by all the lights going out..... Getting to the hard shoulder in one piece was, er, "interesting" to say the least. Mr AA man declared that the regulator had fried, which meant the alternator had been overcharging the battery for many, many miles (remember the fumes we'd all been breathing?) and eventually all the electrics were fried. We got towed to (I think) East Midlands Airport for a car swap. In other news: Fancy a holiday with a difference: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-58104539 Bear heard the very faint sounds of a new-born pink terrorist coming from nearly-new neighbours next door this morning. That might be first SPT in this block of five terraced houses since Bear was a Cub, too many moons ago. Today sees some "fettling" jobs in the kitchen today, primarily involving a sealant gun and a paint brush. I may also lay out a few tiles to come up with suitable wall "patterns" using the random shades of colour - and then marking the reverse with a marker pen to guide the tiler. Fortunately the tiles are only four rows high, and the wall areas divided into five distinct, not very large areas so the task shouldn't be too bad. I hope.... 15

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted August 16, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 16, 2021 Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Hare, 475/297., A poor nights sleep 3.5 hours followed by not a lot, usual problem, which ever side was supporting body hurt, added to knee and back complaining.. Ben the I hate pigeons Collie saw one on the grass as I opened the door and hurtled out, giving a loud WOOF!!! Whereupon many scattered from grass and trees.. After that he was quite happy snuffling around, no dew this morning a cool north westerly breeze instead.. Some of the time awake, brain was thinking of the supports for the flying shelving, solution acquired, fairly easy to make and should be solid.. Also thoughts on the back facing the stairs, it's been decided the walls will be adorned with SWMBOs paintings of former canine companions, So a paneled effect will be made , each panel will contain one of the six paintings. I now need to find one of the paintings to measure up. First however is to replace a Halfmoon molding along the landing floor support beam, I believe it was chiseled off in the 1960s during a Barry Bucknel 1960's cover up everything with hardboard refit.. The Half moon molding will go on top of the plywood matching the remaining piece on the section above your head as you climb the stairs Piece from a local reporter in Afgan yesterday, local district "rulers" have been negotiating with the Taliban for months for a easy hand over of power, so the situation is not surprising. Afgan is not really a state, but a loose assembly of tribal areas. Central government doesn't really have much to say about the rest of country, it's merely a figure head.. The Macarthy and Stone site next to Tesco's seems remarkably popular, most of the separate houses seem to now be occupied, even though the main building of flats and social facilities still doesn't have windows in yet. Which reminds me I must speak to the MRC about getting out leaflets in there when it opens.. You may have noticed above, less than 300 working days left.... This weeks major system was ready and waiting for me which was a surprise, so I'm measuring DCV at the moment. Time to continue.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted August 16, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 16, 2021 Good morning everyone Neil pipped me to the post with his comment about anti-vaxer’s and mobile phones, it appears to me that some folk have more mobile phones than brain cells! On to today, it is mainly getting things organised in the cellar, I need to retrieve some paint from the underfloor storage area, but of course, I have temporarily put stuff in the way when I cleared the cellar for plastering, so that has to be sorted. I will then be able to make a start on stencilling the cupboard doors and drawer front. Yesterday, Sheila had a text message saying that her Zumba class today has been cancelled, so I shall leave the outside tap until next week, but as it only leaks when it is use, it isn’t urgent. To do the job properly, I will need the water to be ‘OFF’ for a couple of hours and that is a BIG no no when Sheila is trying to do the laundry! So I’ll wait until she is out to do that job. Andy. Happy birthday Stay safe, stay sane, enjoy whatever you have planned for the day, back later. Brian 16
