Very sorry to hear that new bad news continues to afflict some of our ER friends, hopefully ER can at least provide some moral support during difficult times.

 

In other news:

 

Without wishing to tempt fate, Puppers condition continues to improve.   That's the first week of a 10 week course of steroids completed.   BP, breathing and stamina all continue to improve so much so that this morning I felt moved to try and extract the little Beeza into the sunshine on the drive from its home sitting on my bike lift in the garage (Oh for a bigger garage!).      This was indeed successful so the obvious next step was an attempt at firing it into some sort of life as it hasn't been touched for over 4 months due to my "lack of health interrupt".    

 

Those of you who know about old dry sump British bikes will recall that they don't like standing idly by for months on end and often show their displeasure by depositing the oil that should be sitting nicely in the oil tank into the engine, filling the sump and making it very wet indeed.   The increased drag on the fly wheels/crank then make it impossible to kick the bike over fast enough for the magneto to generate the necessary spark to ignite the wondrous mixture of petrol vapour and air 

 

For really, really grumpy bikes (the Beeza is small but it can be really grumpy!) this is taken a stage further by allowing now surplus oil in the crankcase to leak past the crankshaft bearing and to fill the primary chain case up with oil and, if you are really really lucky, to soak the notionally dry clutch that lives in there with oil      Guess what ....... 

 

So the sump and chain case were drained (that's another load of freshish oil wasted !), the oil filter was cleaned as it was now available, and the oil tank replenished with finest old fashioned mineral oil.     The plug was taken out and the bike kicked over numerous times to free it up and until oil could be seen travelling up the tell-tale clear pipe to the rockers.   The plug was replaced, petrol turned on and the carb suitably tickled and some attempts to kick it into life were made which at first were not successful due to the combination of the slipping (oily) clutch and Pupper's reduced kicking ability.      Putting it in top gear and turning the rear wheel by hand enabled me to get it past top dead centre and then a might kick on the starter saw it burst into life relatively easily in the end

 

Me thinks a little bimble round the lanes very close to home might be on the cards very soon - Oh how have been missing a little bimble or two

Evening all from Estuary-Land. Now that I have purchased a new TV set the old one has decided to behave itself. I've managed to watch the news and an old film (The Bridge at Remagen) without any problems. My day out bag is tidied up and packed for next weekend. I'm planning to go to Tinkers Park which is practically next door to the Spa Valley Railway. Thats it for now, be back later.

Ooooh someone's now got a BT hotspot near the car park, so I have WiFi in the landrover.

As you can tell I'm now lying on a bouncy mattress in the back of the landrover, as it too dark to read the book in sun glasses..

We've just had the biggest downpour of the day..

Mixed weather in the Dark Peak today although more low cloud than rain at the altitude we got to. A bike ride to Holmfirth was taken. We used the electric ones as the ride from home and back requires two crossings of the Pennines via Holme Moss. I can do the 30 miles OK but the 4000 feet of ascents is a bit hard these days although in fine weather I can still manage Holmfirth via Woodhead which is slightly longer but only 3000 feet of climbs.

 

Condolences to @jonny777. However old they are iy still nurts and you don't forget the times you had. Mom and Dad first met at the beginning of 1945 when he was on leave after service in Europe. They married in 1947 when he left the army. He had reached the age of 90 when he died then Mom gave up and went three weeks later.

The bank were very helpful as my sister was already signatory to their accounts and they paid over the balance quite quickly. Fortunately Mom had been very thorough with keeping everything and there were about 40 years of papers all neatly filed so it was just a matter of going through to pick out what was still relevant. Sorting and disposing of everything in the flat was more of a problem but we found a local charity which took most of the unwanted furniture and other contents.

Still in quite a bit of discomfort where the lump was taken out of my schnozzle but it's easing off. The worst thing, though, is that I can't do anything meaningful in the workshop as wearing my close-up glasses is impossible because of the damn great dressing. To use a Bazism, pah! With luck when I go back to the clinic on Monday something less like a pillow stuck to my nose will be substituted.

I know this is just a temporary situation, but would something like this be useful for both now and the future?

Sorry to  hear the news regarding Tigerburnie’s brother and congratulations to the Abels.

Helped mate around at his new house. There’s a great deal of work to be done before he and his SWMBO can move in but that going to be in about two weeks so he’s going to be busy. More help may be needed. 
SWMBO used to work at Weston Park hospital, a specialist cancer hospital in Sheffield, in the pharmacy preparing the chemo infusions. This was in the early 90s so probably before the ‘wonder’ drugs that Flavio speaks of.

Thanks pH, I do actually have an Optivisor but it's a very low magnification and I wear it over my normal reading glasses. If I don't get a more manageable dressing on Monday I'll invest in something a bit more powerful.

The (relatively) modern treatment of immunotherapy where each patient, in effect, gets their own unique anti-cancer treatment is, to me, mind-blowing. Apparently it’s not equally effective with all types of cancers, but for those for which it does work, it can have amazing results. A friend of my wife has had an aggressive cancer under control (not cured) for several years due to this.

Good evening everyone 

 

4 years ago today (31st July) is anniversary of my last day in paid employment and the start of my retirement, those 4 years have really flown by quickly. 

 

Despite the dull and cool weather, I have quite a good day in the garden. The roses have been dead headed and a general tidy up has been done. I filled my garden waste bag after dinner I emptied it into the green bin. The weather by then was looking decidedly dodgy, so I took all the parts for the cupboard, that had been stored in the workshop to the cellar. I then began measuring and marking up the wood that will form the new legs. I managed to get the 4 legs done and the 2 side cross pieces. Next will be the joints where the cross piece joins to the 2 legs. 

 

After tea we at and watched some recorded TV before we opened a bottle of wine and watched a film. Tonight’s film was called ‘Catch Me If You Can’, starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, it was based on a true story and was very well acted and compelling viewing. 

 

TigerB, sorry to read about your brother’s diagnosis, fingers crossed.

Indeed Rick. As I'm sure you well know, Australians are pretty sanguine about an "authentic" Aussie barbie. I'm thinking in particular of "the song".

 

If you found that the "snags all taste like fried toothpaste", then they got it about right!  

 

Incidentally it is interesting how badly "the internet" lyrics websites get much of this song wrong. I saw one that substituted "snacks" for "snags". 

 

Even the linked version had a couple of changes to the words. "Bloody last time" comes to mind.

Another warm day - around 32°C with temperatures knocked down by a high layer of cloud and wildfire smoke. Humidity was higher than we usually see in the summer (still well below what you would find in the tropics or subtropics) but noticeable.

 

Not horrible, but not our picture perfect summer weather either. Enough to make me want to enjoy my air conditioning. Warm and grey (tinged with yellow hues from the smoke) is not very picturesque or enjoyable. Can't really complain though, many weather conditions are much worse.
