Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. A bit cooler than it has been lately but not much, only a degree down on yesterday but at 22C its still pretty warm. The remaining poppies have now flowered and the honeysuckle is well on the way. There seems to be fewer spiders around this year, perhaps its too hot for them as well.

Sounds like our favourite local W!ll!€ Waver. Bought a house that used to be owned by a guy who manufactured kitchen, bathroom and bedroom fitted furniture. He had stripped out the builder's basic carp and refitted the lot with the top gear from his own range, installed by the factory staff.

New owner stripped it all out and refitted with his own home-made stuff. 

His wife used the local gym. He converted half of the detached double garage to a gym but his wife still went to the one down the road to get out of his way. 

During lockdown 1 he would mess with a motorbike on his drive gor hours on end, frequently just running the engine to the annoyance of everyone around. 

He bought a hot tub for the garden, not really appropriate for outdoors in tbe Dark Peak. When it arrived tbe fitters couldn't get it through because in building the gym he had built a connecting link between the house and garage so he had to hire a 100ft telescopic crane to lift it over the top of the garage. 

Now he's wondering why it's the only house at our end of town that hasn't sold. Maybe because he is asking about 20% over-par for the area. He had someone interested at the start but they pulled out as soon as their surveyor visited it.

Rang my local garage who look after the car and they said bring it in, we'll re-gas it. Just collected it and it's brilliant - at the same time they changed the cabin filter.

 

The downside was the cost  - £142 - it seems that my car was made in the year when there was a changeover to a newer more environmently friendy gas, which costs almost twice as much as the previous one. Still it's worth it to be in a lovely cool car

There are some idiots around who get silly ideas or who have other halves with daft ideas and absolutely ruin houses. My great aunt Irene downsized to a 70s bungalow in Knottingley, The kitchen was beautiful just needed cleaning a bit the bathroom suite had to go to be replaced with an accessible bath/shower the front room let it down it had been fitted with rustic style Tudor beams .

 

I suppose a hot tub in the dark peak if you have a lovely view

It's still warm here melting infront of the air cooler. The last of the decking has been removed I have been ordered to have a day off tomorrow by higher powers,so who am I to argue.

Just watching Tonight on itv not something I normally watch but it has been on home makeovers how folk have gone mad for them over the pandemic but shortages of materials price rises of materials and lack of skilled trades all causing problems. I'm glad I can still manage little jobs it takes me longer to do it but its the satisfaction that helps me mentally. I also have an apprentice from Monday youngest finishes primary school tomorrow for the last time. They are Having a little graduation outside tomorrow I can see it from our bedroom window

Evening all from Estuary-Land. The foxes around here must be starving, there was very little for them in the bin bag, all that they pulled out was the wrappers for some cooked meat. This evening there was a clattering outside on the patio. Some timbers that had been leaning against the wall were scattered over the patio, the fox had been after the slugs and other insects hiding in the timbers. Tea is brewing, be back later.

As a newbie on this thread, I do not wish to appear uncivil. So I had better state that I do not normally wish people happy birthdays or happy anniversaries unless I feel that I know them well.

 

Instead, for now I'll wish everyone happiness for all forthcoming days, and hope  not to offend if I don't individually offer good wishes to people.

I have to confess, I used to look in and post but never bothered with Happy Whatsits of any sort, and then a year or maybe it was two ago, I had so many well wishes that not only did I feel guilty, but very humbled that people took the time to do that.

Each to his or her own, and I'm sure no body on here will be offended if that is your choice.

My parents were Portsmuthians and, after several years away, in 1969, Dad was appointed as head of the Mechanical Engineering department of what was then Portsmouth Polytechnic; his office was in the anchor-shaped building just across the road railway from the USRG. I was also a post grad student there in the early 80s!

 

For a time, I was an ACU&S qualified Scorer ( @Barry O can explain!) and I recorded matches for both Petersfield CC and Hampshire Cricket Board teams at said ground. It was one of the HCCC main grounds before the Rose Bowl was built; the others were at Southampton and Basingstoke and I have recorded matches at both!

 

I tend to find that there are some towns or cities in which I am unable to get lost! Rugby, Portsmouth, (not so much these days) London and probably the Isle of Wight (although I have not been there for a while) number amongst these! Chichester, I am 'learning'; Brighton - no real need ATM!

Evening Folks.

 

Unnecessary awakenings much earlier today coupled with a necessary early start and general hotness throughout the day means I am kn@ckered; still, a productive day was had.

 

Fan (more like aircraft propeller in a cage) is deployed and evaporating the shower water from me

 

Suspect I won't be awake for too much longer, so goodnight and when the time comes sleep well too.

Still 21c, and 65% humidity, feels gooey.

 

The plodge in the bay was nice, water incredibly warm as the tide came in over the flat sands.  Lifeboat was doing a practice launch too.

The only not-close person I've sent online birthday wishes  to died a week later.  Its just not worth the risk.

I have never been one to enjoy sunbathing and am finding the current heatwave rather too hot for my liking. Today I took my wife to see the Van Gogh Alive exhibition in Kensington Gardens. Three buses to get there and three to get home. Both number 9's were the air-conditioned modern RM types and both proved an open window is far more effective in cooling the passengers! One of the other four had its heater on flat out and according to the driver he has no control over the heater which turns itself on and off either when the bus gets cold or the engine is running hot! 

 

We got home to find the lift to our top floor flat (5th floor) was out of order and it took over an hour before an engineer was able to get my wheelchair bound wife to our front door! She has a dentist appointment tomorrow morning and a physio appointment in the afternoon for her knee which was replaced just over three weeks ago. If the lift is not working she is completely trapped so my conversation with the relevant people in the morning could be very interesting! Last time we had problems we landed up in a hotel for a few weeks!

You have foxes - we have raccoons.  A couple showed up today with a new baby; showing off?  Anyway they jumped into our little pond (and I do mean little!) to cool off.  They seem to prefer a similar diet to foxes!

The problem is not so much the foxes but the kebab shop about a quarter of a mile away. Very few of the kebab shop customers bother with litter bins and the discarded wrappers attract the foxes.

I know it well.  Been held on red signals there too many times  

 

Evening all.  Another warm day has passed.  An interesting one at that which included a fatality and a Darwin Award candidate in full flight.  

 

First up was the fast Portsmouth train (coincidental connection with the quote above) which ran through the House of Fun at the permitted 60mph striking an airborne pigeon a full toss in the process.  Poor bird cleared the boundary (white) and safety (yellow) lines before coming to rest, definitely deceased, at the feet of an unlucky passenger.  As it was struck and cleared the boundary before landing we declared it a six.  The cleaner was swiftly in attendance and the remains were removed.  Passenger seemed untroubled.  

 

A half-hour later someone waiting on platform 13 decided he needed to be aboard the train waiting at platform 11.  Without batting an eyelid (and so far as we could tell without checking to see what might be coming on the two 70mph Brighton Fast lines) he jumped off the platform, ran across two tracks, jumped up the other side and managed to board the train between the closing doors.  It all happened so fast that the train was away before anyone had a chance to intervene and restrain him.  On this occasion he got away but he might be traced through CCTV footage.  

 

It has been graduation day at the local university.  Our student neighbours have been parading their finest dresses and white shirts.  In fairness to the tradition of chaps sporting suits it has been too warm for comfort at that level and even ties were worn off.  I ma be disturbed during the night as they all return from the various parties to which they have recently departed.  I was young once; I must have done the same and annoyed the **** out of the neighbours at times.  At least they're good people other things being equal; we could have much worse neighbours.  

 

One more shift before my summer leave.  Let's see what POET'S Day brings.  The way things are going that could stand for Pings On Everyone - Ten Solitary.  Fingers crossed we remain negative and un-pinged until we go away.

It's the same with many takeaways that you get litter eminating from them. As folk walk and eat.

There was a kebab shop on part of my round in Castleford town centre that you used to find half eaten remains thrown all over. Discarded kebabs can be very difficult to pick up using litter pickers. On my Airedale round there wss a parade of shops with various takeaways the locals used to have food fights often there were chips all over the floor . It was fun driving the pavement sweeper up there as there was a fairly narrow walkway infront of the shops with a wall and 6 foot drop to one side and the shop front at the other whilst idiots want to try and walk towards the machine. The rotating brushes at the front would do serious damage

A question if I may be indulged. What is this "pinging" of which many speak?

 

In context I presume it to be some mobile telephone-enabled contract tracing related to positive CoViD-19 infections but am not sure.

 

What entity is managing this?

 

Are mobile phone tower data used to determine proximity, or is this voluntary like deliberate QR code registration?
