Popular Post Pacific231G
This has turned into a very sad day. Dom's news is horrific and, though Gordon's passing may have been anticipated, that doesn't make it any easier and my sympathies also go to his family. Before that, I heard this morning that two other modellers I knew, one very well, have just died. It never rains.... 1 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post NGT6 1315 Posted July 13, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 13, 2021 We’re also worried about how FiL‘s youngest brother might react to the news. He had been taken ill with epilepsy from a fairly young age, which aggravated significantly by the time he was just entering his working life. It started with a seemingly mild form, where he’d usually only appear zoned out, if you will, so I suppose you could say he was underdiagnosed. In addition, at the time, treatment options were much less developed than they are today, making for an especially adverse set of circumstances. He eventually suffered a stroke, which was very likely brought on by the cumulative effects of his long-term history of epilepsy, causing major brain damage and impaired mobility. Though I was actually surprised that he seemed fairly normal for his mental faculties when I met him, even if a bit slower. It also brought on a tendency towards delusional episodes following seizures, though from my recollection, these are not that frequent any longer…fortunately. It‘s really a sad fate he had. He‘s a qualified geographer, but couldn’t really make much of his skills. His mother always went great lengths towards ensuring he got all the care and support he needed. I also know she had made a detailed will a few years ago, so I presume that, too, will be taken care of, also considering that she was quite affluent. I’m sure her apartment alone, which I’ve been to in the past and which is larger than about 200 square metres, will be worth something in the upper half of the six-digit range.
Ozexpatriate
@NGT6 1315 Dom, I've nothing to offer other than sympathies. Abuse of people at any age is terrible and more so when they are unable to defend themselves being either very young, older people or incapacitated in some way. Local news has been reporting the story of a 78 year old (who having gone back to work to stay active) was severely beaten in the head on his way home from work. Appropriately or not, relatives released a photograph of him in hospital. It looked very bad and was quite shocking. I can only imagine how you, and in particular your in-laws, are feeling at this time. 8 1
RMweb Premium Dave Hunt Posted July 13, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 13, 2021 Just logged in to post some trivia about my day but compared with the other news it seems far too trivial. My condolences to Dom and to Gordon's family. Dave 1 6 1
JohnDMJ
May I add my condolences to Gordon's family; I met him at a few shows and he was a great contributor to both this forum and the hobby. RIP. Dom; words are trivial and this afternoon before catching up on this thread, I underwent an echocardiagram. It's a good thing the timing worked! If I'd undergone the procedure after reading this news, I would still be in hospital under investigation! Words fail me and my thoughts and deepest sympathies are with you and yours. As for punishment, I am minded of some medieval practices which, in this case, might be considered inadequate: being boiled live in oil before being hung, drawn and quartered seems too light / lenient a punishment. 3 14

RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted July 13, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) Bear had hoped, like all of us, that Gordon might surprise us all and prove the docs wrong; sadly it was not to be though. Whilst I have never had the privilege of meeting Gordon in person (though a meet was planned - Gordon had very kindly offered me some redundant items he no longer needed - C19 appeared and sadly the meet never happened) I have enjoyed his Eastwood Town** thread and found it to be most enlightening. In fact Gordon purchased the gauges for setting certain parallel bits of metal at the right distance apart (16.2mm) from Bear, as I was supplying them at the time. RIP Gordon, and may the Great Steam Shed in the Sky welcome you with open arms. **ET was featured in an edition of M*del R*il Magazine - Issue 150 perhaps? RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted July 13, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 13, 2021 Good evening everyone Very sad news indeed about Gordon, my thoughts go out to all his family. The weather has been very kind today, warm and sunny all day, although we did go a little cloudy around dinner time. Thankfully, they were white and not grey, but they soon dispersed. I did not expect to get as much done today as I did, so I am really pleased with that. After finishing off the shelving unit in the cellar I then went to the shed and cleared the shed, followed by shelving unit, storing most of its contents temporarily in the workshop. I then removed the unit and shortened it, removing 9 inches. I then took the 2 shelving units from the cellar and installed them in the shed, then installed the 3rd shelving unit which I had just reduced in height. I had just about finished in time for a slightly later than usual dinner. After dinner I started putting back all the stuff that had temporarily stored in the workshop, it was all back in place in time for an early finish and well earned muggertea. I still have a drawer unit to put in the shed, but I need to modify it slightly so that it will fit below one of the shelving units I installed today, which I am hoping will get done tomorrow. The cellar is slowly getting emptied, making the task of plastering a lot easier for Ian! This evening we had our weekly chat with Vickie, which is always a joy, especially if the kids join in as well!

RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted July 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 14, 2021 Good moaning from a currently dry Charente. It is the dawn of "le quatorze" or Bastille Day. Last night was fireworks night but not in our little village. Today we will meet in the hangar (open fronted shed) at the back of thectown hall, for a meal. Thisxstarts at 12.00 and it is very unlikely that we will stagger/roll back home much before 18.00. Stamina is required. It's fortunate that we only have just over 100 yards to get back home. If one of our garden walls had a gate, we could just walk through the gate. Yesterday's news, here on ER was not good. However there was some better news here. 2 years and 4 months after starting the process, Beth has finally been told that she can exchange her UK driving licence for a French one. Hopefully in about 3 weeks time, the process will be complete. I short circuited thecprocess by collecting a speeding ticket in Nov 2019 and got my licence in April 2020. The ironic part of yezterday was that in the post a letter arrived for Beth, informing her that she had been caught speeding. I tried very hard not to laugh., as she had given me some stick over my transgression. Talk about timing. Anyway I'll wish you all a happy fourteenth. RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted July 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 14, 2021 In what Bear hopes will be a much brighter day than yesterday, I'm down for brake servicing duty on Buddy's Honda CRV at eight hundred hours; this'll mean rescuing the trolley jack and axle stands from the shed, as well as the socket set, spanners etc. etc. One of the downsides of car maintenance is that much of the tools required are so bluddy heavy.... Some was achieved in the kitchen yesterday, including the addition of further shelf supports to the corner units and filling the "really useful" storage boxes with plates etc. before sliding them into the dark recesses of those same units (a sort of cheapo "Magic Corner" but without the loss of space that such devices cause). This has worked very well, though Bear's rule of "Measure Once, Bvgger up Twice" has let me down in that the boxes turned out to be a little too big to fit as intended. Still, finding a box of the correct length would no doubt then result in the other dimensions being less than ideal, so unless I scoured the four corners of the earth (or made my own) then I'm unlikely to find exactly what I was looking for. And then yet more boxes of kitchen cr@p were unloaded into their final resting places; I do know that I have enough spare light bulbs to cause a peak in global warming for the next ten years..... Only a box full of first aid/medicinal bitties remain now, along with a carrier bag full of cleaning sundries. I've decided that a couple more plastic storage boxes will be ideal for these. As for anything else, well I'll just make it up as I go along..... 21

Popular Post Andrew P
Today is the first time I've had to clear the Editor, although I have read of many who have to do it regularly. As many have said, lets hope for no more days like yesterday. Glorious morning here in Amp Sher. looks like shorts might be the order of the day, even though I have an X Ray appointment later, I'm sure the nurses have seen half naked men before. Have a good day one and all, stay safe and keep well.
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted July 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 14, 2021 I have an appointment at the dentist this morning.. this could be painful both teeth and walet wise. The restvof the day involves a trip to a place near Barnsley to drice a model of somewhere near @Erichill16. With a colleague. Yesterday many goosegogs were collected, new potatoes dug up and odd bits of things completed. Have as good a day as you can. Baz 17
