The arc of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera is long. They created Tom and Jerry at MGM. When they spun out their own company in 1957 they produced a prolific range of animated material, including Wacky Races, but also The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, The Jetsons, and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!. 

 

At MGM they did a number of live action + animated sequences. Perhaps most famously Jerry dancing with Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh.

 

They were still pumping out new shows well into the 1970s which I distinctly remember my younger brothers and sister watching.

 

Yogi and Boo Boo recently appeared in an insurance commercial that is still in rotation.

 

Bill died in 2001 and Joe in 2006.

Actually the highest rates infection to 16 June (the most recent published figures on the Coronavirus Dashboard) are in Falmouth.  Falmouth East has a rate of 785.7 (55 cases) while Falmouth North has a rate of  840.7 (66 cases);  the rate in St Ives is 761.9 (53 cases) while the next highest is Newquay West with 675.4 (50 cases).   All bad of course but clearly some of it might be down to more than G7 although the extinct rebelling mob were in Falmouth.

Good evening everyone 

 

the weather has been dull, grey, windy and cold, even the heating came on this afternoon!

 

Well apart from watering the plants this morning and this afternoon, I’ve not done a great deal. However, it was really nice to catch up with Vickie and Ian when they called round this morning. In fact, we spent well over 2 hours or so chatting whilst drinking tea and coffee. Although we didn’t get to see the kids because they were at school, it did make conversation a lot easier as they weren’t either chipping in or winding each other up and bickering as they would normally do. 

 

This evening was the weekly Sainsbury’s Grand Prix, surprisingly everyone I saw tonight in the shop tonight was not only wearing a mask, but was wearing it properly! I was gob smacked, you could have knocked me down with a feather!

 

I’ll admit it, I HATE WEARING A MASK, but I’ve been used to wearing one for years, due to some of the tasks I had to do whilst working and I acquired quite a large stash of industrial grade masks, not to mention the ones I use when spray painting. Wearing them in public on the other hand is a right royal PITA, but I wear one to protect myself and my loved ones, from the throng of idiots who think the rules apply to others and not them. Roll on when masks can be ditched permanently.

We are on a continual search to find the ideal garden hose (or even an acceptable one). It has to be at least 50 foot long - both our front and back yards are quite long diagonally. My wife does most of the watering and she wants a hose that’s reasonably light, supple and does not kink. We’ve had about 10 over the years, but none have been completely satisfactory and all have failed in various ways. We’ve also tried different hose reels, but they have become progressively harder to turn and have eventually broken.

 

Today was the latest attempt. Unboxed the hose (sorry - no video!), connected it up, fitted a nozzle, turned on the tap - and the connection for the nozzle blew out of the end of the hose! So that one goes back to the store tomorrow.

My 'guaranteed not to kink' garden hose is the kinkiest* hose I have ever owned. I am yet to replace it, though I am tempted by what I see in a catalogue for high-end car cleaning products.

We have 150yards to the bottom of the garden but have deliberately not put anything that needs watering that far away. So we just have 75ft of hose.. As it is we too have been through many hoses, there's nothing that meets the non leaking lightweight non kinking market. We now have a heavy weight hose, 10year guarantee. It doesn't get put away properly all summer, but gets looped up and down on a path. It's not kinked yet..

Some G-word was done yesterday.  There is an alleyway between my jungle and the showpiece that is the garden belonging to Mrs Electric-Chair next door.  Over her wall peep various creepers, mostly ivy but not solely.  Such is the overhang that the tendrils were beginning to obstruct the alleyway – that is, until I took the shears to them.  The offcuts took up quite a lot of space in the green bin but if/when I summon up the courage to attack the nettles and other stuff that I have allowed to proliferate there will be plenty of room for them.  Threatening to spend time in the garden is quite a good way of ensuring rain.

 

Before my adventure with the shears I booked a ticket for a concert next month.  Ninebarrow, a duo that I rather like, will be appearing in Milton Keynes as part of the international festival, despite hailing from Somerset.  Phoning the Stables box office was not without incident.  I was cut off four times!  On the fifth attempt I got to speak to a human.  I told her what had happened – how could I not? – and within ten minutes had downloaded the ticket.  Later I sent an e-mail to the box office to inform the manager of what had happened and received a most apologetic reply.  I wish her the best of luck in discussing the matter with BT.   

 

Some time today I need to do a fodder run.  It is necessary and gets me out of the house.  My purchases will include next week’s Radio Times, which may well become a work of fiction because next week is the first of two dominated by Wimbledon.  Oh joy.

Good moaning from a damp Charente.  It looks like more Welsh sunshine today.  Neughbours roofers arechere already.  The house is a typical farmhouse style built round a courtyard with the house at right angles to the road, then various outbuildings  carrying on to complete a U shape. The tower crane is in the centre and will be able to reach all the roofs.  To help out we've told Johnny and Ghislaine to park their cars in our expanse.    

 

Much G word was done yesterday morning and the area at the front of the shed looks a lot better.  Today WE are going shopping then in the afternoon I am going trainspotting. I think that I might be able to cope.

Apparently the 1975 "New Tom and Jerry Show" was pretty much unwatchable, so if that's anything to go by....

While Tom & Jerry is one of the cartoons almost every kid has memories of, it was banned in various parts of the world for offensive content. A number of scenes displaying smoking, alcohol consumptions, harmful substance abuse, and violence were deleted, re-dubbed, or even taken off-air. The show was also highly criticised around the world for promoting unpunished violence as Jerry was never held accountable for his mischief. 

I don't seem to hear much mention of young kids running around in gangs dealing drugs and stabbing each other back in the 50's and 60's though - maybe if the original T&J came back then the current youth would find it much more fun than kicking the streets?

Bear uses one of those new fangled expanding hoses that grow when water flows thru' them.  The most user-friendly hoses I've ever used - not a sign of a kink, ever.  They don't get as long as the adverts claim though - so if you're garden is 50ft long then I'd aim for a hose 75 or even better 100ft long in the expanded state.  They don't last forever - Bear's first one probably went for 3 years or so, but using it with a pressure washer may not have helped.  And as far as I know they can't be fixed if they get a hole in.  I'd not go back to conventional hoses now though.

 

In other news:

Bear awaits the start of roof repairs to nearly new neighbours next door - most or all of which will be carried out via Bear's front garden.  I'm hoping the roofers simply dump all the old dross (after taking it all away first - which they do) - there's a serious lump of lead to be replaced up there, and Bear's knows of a friendly dealer in non-ferrous metals that would be pleased to take it off Bear's hands in exchange for cake tokens....

They're due at 8, so Bear had better get get moving - car to move first, then dross to move from the side of the conservatory in case they want to access the rear of Bear's roof with a ladder later in the week, then dross to move from the side of the shed in order to rescue spare roofing tiles.  Once that's done then I can crack on with cutting wood for the kitchen refit on the saw bench.  No doubt I'll also be expected to provide TeaBear duties at regular intervals during the next few days.....

We too had the expanding hose, the longer lengths are joined internally.. It failed at the joins, didn't last long at all..

 

The journey to work is now enlivened by two massive coaches with a local companies name on, triple exhausts, a pair of rear axles which appear to have some sort of steering mechanism, towing fittings and strange / old registration plates, one is three letters three numbers and the other is 4 numbers 2 letters on a GB registration plate the RU letters on that don't seem to be from Northern Ireland.. Anyway, they are extremely slow on corners, particularly roundabouts, but hammer along quite swiftly on the straight which makes them a bit difficult to overtake.

 

Various people have been in setting up their areas, only a couple at a time, also the site maintenance man has been removing one of the offices we inherited, that will be a open conference area, for the engineers having design discussions..

 

Time I walked 120 Paces down to the lab and this weeks major system.. Ohms to measure at the moment.

We are travelling to Warrington today for an over 60s cricket match. We will return later.. but not via Scotland as Jimmy Crankie has forbidden it.

 

The area next door to ours in Leeds has seen rapid rises in positive testing..it will, I fear, remain so until the stupids go home...

 

We have a flat hose fitted to our pump. It is easier to roll up but kinks like mad.

 

We had slates on our Barrow "work" house. While the roofers would swp these for new tiles they didn't want to pay for thecslates. Strangely when they took slates off they were always stacked neatly in the skip then covered with used felt then the old lats eere added. Bunch of crooks!

The roofers who redid our roof a few years ago were very good (we know the firms owners) but reckon that the old tiles had gone "porous" ..some had almost gone see through in places) years of acid rain?
