One thing I think many make the mistake of is moving on retirement. Breaking all attachments, they often move to somewhere they've been on holiday or just like the look of without doing proper research. Our choice of moving here was well before retirement, with an eye to it being our final home. I had lived 20 miles away before. That was some of our thinking when we moved here getting on for 20 years ago - it is our retirement home and was bought as such, but we moved long before we retired - last year in my case. So we have built up friendships here (we did know quite a few folk here already though) well in advance of decreptitude. The buses are OK from here still, and the village shop has everything needed to survive without visiting the supermarkets in the bright lights of Ramsey - at a price. 23

leopardml2341
Evening folks. A few more doings done and a beer garden visited - my own I really should carry a little notepad in my back pocket so that I can write down tomorrow's jobs when I think of them today. Might not check back later so, although it's quite early, when the time comes for bed , sleep well. Edited May 31, 2021 by leopardml2341 16
Popular Post AndrewC
Evening all. Back in the boring borough after the drive from hell. Normally it takes about 5h 15m door to door including breaks but today it was 7h 10m. Every sh1tgibbon who hadn’t driven or serviced their cars in the past 14 months was out today. The number of dead vehicles on the side of the motorways was staggering. A couple of really nasty accidents too. One we passed on the A14 was being cleared and there was a bit of a BMW on the recovery lorry, a crane dangling the doors and bits of the roof as they were lifted from the ditch, and a couple of the recovery crew carrying assorted bits of bumper, grille, wing, etc. If the driver survived he should buy lottery tickets as he/she must be the luckiest so and so on the planet. Even with all the idiots, cockwombles, and asshats, it was worth the drive just to spend a few days with the offspring. With that, time for a very early night. I’m getting old. Must be UK roads as a 12 hour 1200km drive used to be nothing to me. 2

I’ve done the 1200km in 12 hour drive (Edmonton-Vancouver?) and apart from a numb bum for a couple of days, it wasn’t too bad. But last week I drove Nelson-Vancouver - 640 km in 10 hours on the Crowsnest highway, though with plenty of stops. That was hard, and I know the road pretty well. 1 3
RMweb Premium polybear Posted May 31, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2021 Bear has completed cutting/planing both of the short decorative end panels to fit - these being the same height as the base units. There is one tall decorative panel to do - being just over 2m high; I'm in no great rush to get that one fitted though, as it's final location makes it a prime target for potential damage when the worktops are being maneuvered into position. Tomorrow will see a request for an (updated) estimate for the worktops submitted; I also plan to wire up the cooker supply (finally!). I also want to paint the cut edges of the end panels where they contact the floor in order to seal them against possible moisture ingress when the floor is washed etc. There's lots of hidden jobs like that - when added up they sure do take up the time. It's one reason why I'd not want a kitchen fitting team to fit the kitchen - loads of tasks that Bear (and buddy next door, who's pretty clued up on site work) regard as essential/highly desirable that just wouldn't get done if kitchen fitters were doing the job. Nearly new neighbours next door have the same roofer (Tom) that converted Bear's Conservatory into a "substantially glazed structure" (that's Buildings Control B*llshit for sticking a solid roof on it - which is one of the best things this Bear ever did) coming round this week to quote for sorting out their leaky lead valley; Bear plans to sound him out regarding replacing the roof felt and battens on Bear's roof at some point in the semi-near future - such as maybe this time next year. The felt is around 50 years old now, and whilst showing (touch wood) no signs of any issues at present, at some point in Bear's lifetime it's pretty certain that it'll need doing. I have no desires to move, so I figure I'd rather get it done and out of the way now(ish) than in ten year's time - and by someone I can trust to do a good job. That's the plan, anyway..... 17

Bear talked to the Chief for a while - it seems the problem with modern cars is that they are becoming so strong that it can take a while to get the occupants out, which of course isn't helpful in some respects. The other issue is they have to refer to computer databases for each & every model of car to establish where it is (and isn't) safe to cut bits of car away - cutting in the wrong place can set off airbags etc. which can risk harm to those inside, as well as to the fire crews nearby. 17
RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted May 31, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 31, 2021 Evening check-in. Bored. Bored. Bored. A lovely day was had but every suggestion I made of "where to go" was refuted with "too crowded", "too far", "I don't want to mix with other people" or "we need a car". OK. I'm over all of the "too" reasons. I gave up last summer and I don't want to give this one up as well. Yes there's a ruddivirus still about here and there (though we haven't had a recorded case locally in at least a couple of months now) but it's time Dr. SWMBO made a move beyond the garden gate and back into the outside world. Or at least let me do so without making a fuss about "mixing with plague-carriers". So the perfectly good Ban Collar Day was spent admiring the picnic table on the grass while other folk got on with their lives. I wouldn't have wished to be in the hordes at Durdle Door or Bournemouth but that would have been true on any day, Covid or not. Uncle Boris says we're allowed to have friends over and have a few indoors if we want. The rest of the Hill of Strawberries is doing just that. Why am I different? OK. Rant over. I'm off for a walk before bed. I need a clearer head before I attempt sleep. Goodnight all. 3
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 31, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2021 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Just finished a couple of rounds of ham sandwich. In Tess Coes today I spotted a pack of very nice looking ham in the reduced to clear so I grabbed it. It was when disposing of the wrapper I spotted the use by date, 10th. June no less. How it got into the stuff with todays date I don't know but it was quite a bit cheaper than usual. I wish that I had spotted the date a bit sooner. Tea is brewing, be back later.

A collegue at the Council Scouse Billy more of a socialist than Trotsky was an ex fire fighter. He told us the tale of trying to gain entry to a burning smart car by opening the boot and ending up holding it as it had come away in his hand they have fabric brackets that hold the boot door 2

Popular Post Erichill16
Evening All, Hope all is well as I’ve not been about much today.Spent the morning at work sorting more stuff out then a couple of hours this afternoon at friend Nicks having a running session on his novelty garden feature. (Neil, Peter was also there) Got back home at 5pm when a friend from the MRC called round with his family and just after they set off into the wild blue yonder and SWMBO had started running the bath one of our nephews (not the ones i usually refer to) turned up with his girlfriend and stayed an hour. An enjoyable bank holiday was had. Goodnight, Robertps 17

Popular Post The Lurker
Greetings all from Sidcup which by all accounts has been lovely and sunny. I visited the Aged P’s in the ancestral village, which is scheduled to grow to 8x the size it was when I left home some 36 years ago. Mrs lurker and the boys are in the grim north ( ie Washington) with the car so I availed myself of the 51 bus and southeastern. It’s a shame there are not any direct trains from Orpington to Paddock Wood these days but the journeys were OK any my Mum rustled up a curry! Still when I got home and opened up the house it was good to get outside; old folk don’t seem to like sitting out. I have not tried to catch up the missing pages since I last logged in but my sympathies to Rick and his frustrating day. Nothing I can say will change Mrs Rick’s hesitancy but I hope that she will take steps forward soon. Either that, or it rains the rest of the summer. 13 7
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted May 31, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 31, 2021 Good evening everyone The weather has been absolutely glorious, the skies were blue and not a cloud to be seen. Some more ‘potted plants have been permanently put in the ground and there are only a handful left to do! I’m getting quite a selection of empty pots now, they’ll probably end up at Vickie and Ian’s house, like the rest have done. These were then watered in, along with the camomile, which seems to have taken well! It looks like there is signs of growth on some of them too, so we’re both very pleased about that. However, I ended up spending far too long in the garden, so consequently, we ended up having a late dinner. But after eating dinner, I went down to the cellar as planned, I didn’t get quite as much done as I’d hoped I would, but I managed to get one sheet of plasterboard cut to size. This also needed holes cutting in to clear the socket back boxes and also the spur back box. To it took a bit to get it all marked up and cut out, but it’s now ready to be fixed to the wall. This section of wall needs another piece to finish it off, but thankfully it’s only a narrow bit that’s needed, just 16in wide, the remaining piece will fit the wall opposite where the light switch is. Hopefully I’ll get it all done tomorrow, as I plan to spend the whole day down there. After tea Sheila and I had a walk in the garden, it’s the first time Sheila’s been out in it since I laid the new path, as she didn’t like walking on the old path because it was too uneven for her liking. We were out for about 30 minutes altogether, inspecting the plants etc. She’s very pleased with both the progress that I’ve made and the fact that there are so many flowers that are about to bloom. It must sound as if we have a huge garden, it’s not, the area that contains plants is only about 25ft long and 18ft wide and that includes the path. There’s still a lot to do and we need more plants, particularly evergreen plants, to fill spaces below some shrubs, but it’s getting there.

Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all Well, that were a rum do and no mistake. I was actually up a bit earlier than usual yesterday, having been drifting into and out of slumber for four hours or so from 1 am. Fortified with my first mugga of the day, I did what I normally do and caught up with RMweb before scraping together my morning pearls of wisdom, using Word first because I make slightly fewer typos that way. I copied and pasted - or so I thought. A couple of hours later my Messenger pinged. It was Barry asking if I was OK – a kind thought and so typical of the man. I was rather weary for most of yesterday morning, which may have had some connection with my imperfect sleep. You don’t know how reassuring it is to learn that someone misses me. I live alone. The day will surely come when I do not surface as expected, someone will kick in the front door and find what is left of me. Not for a while yet, I hope. I ventured into the jungle again yesterday, but only for long enough to water the hanging basket. The best way of doing that appears to be to take it down, place it on the lawn, add water and hang it up again. The strawberry plants that it contains have some green baby strawberries on them. I hope that the plants in the ground will be thus endowed ere long but my expectations are low. If I do nothing else today I should buy my lottery tickets. I did try yesterday but the terminal in the convenience store was not working. I may do a modest fodder run today but it will keep until tomorrow if needs must. Tonight I expect to learn a bit about the railways of Ireland via one of those Zoom meetings that have become commonplace since that ruddy virus came along. I miss the social interaction with other members of the e-audience but console myself by recalling that if we were all in the same room I would be cross with some of them for burbling among themselves. Best wishes to all, especially all the sick and missing. Chris 4
