Bear was talking to his buddy on the phone last night - he bought his bench top milling machine from the estate of a guy that had it in his front room (aka his workshop...) - the power was via a flex up to the the light pendant....

If so it could be, the RCD itself , they do occasionally fail.

Something else in the distribution unit itself, such as dampness or a sagging bare wire.

Or an outside chance, a fault in the supply.

Dampness in the wiring,

A wiring fault probably in a socket for lights or power where a wire has slowly sagged so now it touches and fails.

A fried mouse in the works, as I found in a splitter box for lighting once.

 

I tracked the fault in mine down to the downstairs ring main. This includes the boiler but the fault probably lies elsewhere, as the circuit still trips when the boiler is switched off. And either it also affects the upstairs sockets as well or there's a separate problem affecting them. Trying to use them doesn't cause the RCD to trip but they don't work. It's very strange as things worked fine two days ago, then suddenly (without any external factors or obvious changes or explanation being applied) - not. 

 

Tried getting hold of a sparky for next week but was quoted extortionate prices. Back on the phone Tuesday...

Afternoon/Evening all from Estuary-Land. Not done a lot anything today, the G word was intended but the hay fever struck again. Probably be no pollen tomorrow but it will most certainly not be gardening weather. Plenty to do though as I have to clear the stuff away from the radiator that needs removing. Dinner has been eaten, grilled sea bass with just green veg, no spuds. Time to put the kettle on, be back later.

One way to try and find out what is causing thee tripping, is to turn everything off and then switch each item on individually until one causes it to trip.

Bathroom door hanging successfully completed early afternoon, with no further problems or mishaps, which was a relief.  I am pleased to report that it closes perfectly.  As I had previously swapped a hinge from another door, I then had to swap it back, which only took a few minutes.

 

I had hoped also to make hot cross buns today, but the door rehanging took longer than expected, so they weren’t made.  I will try to find time for them tomorrow.  I haven’t tried making them before, so it could be interesting.

Evening - another day of too much activity!

 

Went to archery with Mrs NHN and the bike club boys, couple of other folk there too, OK here to meet up to 10 outside currently.  A good round, Mrs NHN 3rd, field of 9.  Only beaten by the Island champion and his bestie.  Killed my hips though, its about a mile and a half through the glen, all on rough and boggy ground.  I'll pay tonight.

 

On the way back saw this in Douglas (the  Big City) Bay, 'Yacht A', Russian Oligarch job.  I think it is the largest sailing yacht or something, depends how you define a yacht - I have seen many smaller ships......  I wonder what a Russian mega billionaire is doing here?  As if...  He may find things not as secret as they were though.

Well the entertaining (at times) task of joining one bit of wall to another bit of wall that it wasn't in line with has been duly completed with much attendant cutting of bricks to make the necessary reverse curve to give a reasinable looking transition between the two.  Couple of barrow loads of concrete tipped in behind to give a total retaining capacity and stop (hopefully) and plant growth where it isn't needed (as it will be under slabs on which pots will stand like the bit of the one wall which was already there.  The GD has several more days at home although one of them is a study day for her open uni course with its very odd (to us) way of adding references to essays etc but we should manage another day all being well and that will be all straight wall which fortunately is already a few courses high.  So while the arthr's-itis might well strike the hands (again) at least i won't havea repeat of the sort of thing working at ground level does to my (worse) knee.

 

An excellent roast lamb dinner followed this evening although i wouldn't recommend runner beans from Guatemala judging by the ones we had this evening.  eEther they don't use the right variety or more likely their weather is not quite right for growing such veg (or they aren't as keen on veg as I am so don't realise its shortcomings?).

Good evening everyone 

 

After a dull and cool start to the day, it steadily improved as the day went on. In the afternoon the back garden was bathed in sunshine, which made all the heavy lifting very warm. 

 

Anyway, I managed to shift all but 8 of the bricks before dinner, they were shifted after dinner. 

 

Whilst we were eating dinner, Sheila and I were discussing the details of the fireplace, regarding how it would look and how close it would be to the fence behind it. So after Id moved the last of the bricks, I temporarily built a mock up of the fireplace, to give her a better idea of how it would look, as she couldn’t visualise it very well. Once done, I called her to have a look, but she couldn’t see very well from the back door window. So I took a photo, before dismantling it all and re-stacking the bricks into a neat pile once more. Further discussions were made after I’d packed up for the day and we were having a mid afternoon drink. The original design for the fireplace was for it to be on a ‘ruined’ wall. However, after seeing the mock up, management has decided that a straight wall will be built instead. I’m glad the decision was made before the wall was started and not afterwards. 

Below is the photo I took of the mock up.

The wall will eventually be higher than this, about 2 - 3 courses above the top of the mantelpiece depending upon how many bricks I’ve been able to salvage. The fireplace itself will be painted white, the internal fireback will be rendered.

 

Just as we were sitting down to tea, steak pie and chips since you asked, the sun disappeared, the sky turned 50 shades of grey and it went very dull, but thankfully it didn’t rain. Apparently, there is a chance of snow tomorrow and a drop in temperature to around 0C.

Evening All,

Started off warm and breezy here but by late afternoon it was cold and breezy. Took mil for a walk this morning and then gardening in the afternoon which was followed by curry for tea and then a film and phone call with mate. We discussed my building project and as his job is related to the building trade he’s a offered to come and look  at what I’m trying to get done. If nothing else it will give him an idea of what I’m talking about when we’re next on the phone and it gets  him out.

Sydney is in the dog house as he has started urinating in bils house. He’s no longer a puppy and has been house trained and being less than two years old it’s unlikely to be an incontinence issue. Bil and sil think he’s territory marking which is probably correct and if he doesn’t stop well it’s a trip to the vets........  SWMBO and myself aren’t particularly happy with the situation but as ‘he’s not our dog’ we have to be careful. 
As for tomorrow, my team are playing in the afternoon and I really need to knuckle down and get some business work done so there’s seeds is a  plan.

Would you believe this innocent little chap would go around peeing in his home?

Awoken at just before 04:00, by an increasing wind, just after 04:00, it really hit, hammering with rain and later hail on the windows.

I'll try for more sleep shortly to see if I can increase the 5.5 hours so far.

 

Forepaws complaining of the change in weather as well as being tired over 3 days manual work.

 

I'm getting quiet irritated by this spell chucker, it's getting very presumptuous in changing correct words. For instance it changed hail to nail.

 

Shelving, an area above a radiator cover in the hallway, and an area above some clothing drawers in the bed room have been identified for further bookshelves. The hallway shelves will necessarily, be shallow, only six inches deep.

 

Plans for today,

More shelving, more trailer work, plan the two new shelving units.

 

But first,

Time to Switch off this gadget and try for more sleep.

Shops were  all shut here, except bottleshops apparently.

And the Sydney Easter Show is on but has a daily limit of 60,000 people in case of covid. How brilliant our track and trace guys must be.

Ben the I want out Collie has just dragged me reluctantly out. Darn chilly in the wind, the daffs are lying near horizontal, at least it wasn't raining.

Looking at the weather radar, the first light wave of rain is now over Gwiwer's residence, but there is a heavier  lump of weather about to hit here, it's currently blowing 47mph.

 

When I've warmed up, the fire will be woken for the morning, and a muggacoffee made..

In my fridge is a slab of cold roast pork.  When it was a slab of hot roast pork it was a lot larger and the bits that I sliced off it were very tasty.  I'm getting the hang of the way that Delia Smith recommends cooking crunchy roast potatoes.  There is a jug of leftover gravy whose fate needs to be decided and a bowl full of stewed apple that is no longer needed for apple sauce.  I'm sure that some sort of sumptuous repast can be made from that lot.  In any event there is some chicken chasseur left which is likely to form the basis of today's main meal.

 

I need to wrap a wet towel round my head, figuratively speaking.  The presentation that I am to give to a well-known m*d*l r**lw*y society next month via Zoom will not write itself.  All I need to do, in theory, is remember how to concentrate but that's easier said than done.  It is the nature of things that there are many distractions available.  One such is likely to be the televised press conference later this afternoon.  On a Bank Holiday?!  Bless my soul.   I suppose that I should give thanks for that ruddy virus for some small mercies.  One is that the event of which my presentation will be but a small part is not being held in Bracknell and I do not have to drive there.  How I will miss the unkind comments about the tumbleweed blowing through the less than vibrant town centre, a fitting monument to 1960s town planning.

 

We got on to promotions somehow.  My last one was in 1974.  Clearly I peaked too early.  Would I have wanted the extra hassle that comes with added responsibility?  I will never know.

Unplugging it as well as turning it off may be a good move as well.

Bear did mean to mention that an alternative to filling screw holes before re-drilling is to coat a matchstick (or even two - perhaps tapering them slightly if needed) in wood glue and tap into the hole.  Leave until dry and then re-drill.  Often easier than trying to fill a hole all the way to the bottom.

Bear had a second visit from he who has a bl00dy great workshop in a flat - he decided he wanted to buy yet more metal that Bear had advertised on the 'net.  The net result is that Bear has exchanged various bits of "scrap" metal (ok, so a 2ft sq. sheet of 1.6mm copper isn't yer average scrap) into a hundred and fifteen quid, and clearing it out of Bear's shed at the same time.  Result.

 

Bear watched a film last night via Amazon Prime - "Instrument of War" - based on a true story, so Bear learnt at the end.  Recommended viewing.

 

Today's fun will include a good wash of the car - the first for months as it's hardly been used, yet still manages to get dirty.  Oh deep joy - still, it always feels good when it's done

Happy EASTER MONDAY.

 

WOW, What a difference from yesterday. Snow has just stated falling after yesterdays glorious sunshine.

To be fair, its NOT really falling, but I have seen a few flakes and the main dump, according to my Biased Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Weather App is for the main bulk of Snow to fall from 11am.

 

Yesterday we sat outside for morning coffee and it was really hot. I sat there most of the morning doing some sketching and painting and it was lovely.

 

Still the bonus today is, I have nowhere to go today, so will sit in the warm and have an early breakfast, probably Ready Breck today I recon.
