Perhaps I will carry on waiting for a while. Even changing a time zone by an hour throws him into some stressed state. I am afraid I haven’t really been sympathetic. He'd freak out if he lived in Tweed Heads on the NSW QLD border - in fact the border runs right through the middle of the town. QLD doesn't do daylight savings because it fades the curtains and cows stop producing milk so you can stand on one side of Dixon street at say 11.30am then cross the road into QLD and go back an hour. Or 20 years because its QLD. 1 1 2 15

Not only does one nation have multiple time zones but some differ by 30, 45, 60, 90,165,180 and 210 minutes from each other Victoria, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory (ACT - the two unconnected areas of Canberra and Jervis Bay) and Tasmania adopt Eastern Time (AET) as does Queensland but only the first four change by an hour in summer to "daylight saving" time (AEDT). South Australia adopts Australian Central Time (ACT - not to be confused with the Australian Capital Territory) or Australian Central Daylight-saving Time (ACDT) which is 30 minutes later than AET / AEDT. Northern Territory adopts ACT but calls it Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) and does not adopt ACDT meaning Darwin can be on the same time as Adelaide or an hour behind. Perth and most of Western Australia operates on Western Standard Time (AWST - 3 hours behind AET) and has trialled daylight-saving but currently does not adopt it. The isolated settlements of Eucla, Mundrabilla and Madura are so far from anywhere else that they have their own little time zone (Australian Central Western Standard Time or "Eucla Time" - ACWST) which is 2 hours 45 minutes behind AET or 45 minutes ahead of AWT. The New South Welsh city of Broken Hill is so far removed from Sydney (it's actually closer to Melbourne in Victoria) that it adopts ACT / ACDT from its closer neighbour Adelaide in South Australia. Isolated rural settlements in the north also have their own very localised and usually informal time zones. Factor in that those states / territories which adopt Daylight Saving do not all nor always change on the same date and there can be all sorts of day-to-day variations. And when you have digested that and remembered which dates the various changes occur on you can tell me when the train arrives! That was always fun on the inter-state runs. Driving north from Katherine in inland Northern Territory there is only one radio station, the local ABC which is a lot of talking. You get to hear interviews and so on, then a little later you get to hear them all over again as you get towards Darwin and they are an hour behind. (Unless you get murdered first by an outback serial killer who you pick up because they pretended their car broke down. Thats always happening.) RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 15, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 15, 2021 Good evening everyone Well the grey skies cleared and sun remained shining in the sky all day! But as I mentioned this morning, I planned to remain inside and continue my work in the cellar. There has been quite a bit of progress today,I got a lot more done than I expected too! But having hurt my back a few weeks ago, I was very conscious of doing the same again, so I decided to split the work, I worked for 30 minutes, then rested for 10 minutes, resumed work for another 30 minutes, rested 10 minutes etc. I knocked off for dinner about 1 o’clock and by 3 o’clock I’d done about 60-70% of the work. I’ll definitely get it finished tomorrow. This is how it looked first thing this morning. This is how it looked when I packed up for the day. After tea I completed the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix, after first dropping off both mine and Sheila’s prescriptions at the pharmacy. In other news, the neighbours whose roof was damaged when a brick fell from their chimney as had scaffolders in, erecting scaffolding for the roofers who will be sorting out the damaged roof and also the repairing chimney. 22
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 15, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 15, 2021 (edited) When I was younger and in a band, the bassist and 2 guitarists, each had a 100W Marshall speaker cabinet, which contained 4 x 12in speakers. They were about 3ft square and about 14in deep and weighed roughly 80lb each. Two of the guys would struggle to carry one between them, whereas I could quite happily pick one up, carry it from the van, through doors (opened of course) into the hall and if necessary up stairs to the stage on my own. Because of my lifting/manhandling abilities, I earned the nickname of Big (hairy) Monster. Being 6ft, I was about 4in taller than the next tallest in the band, I also lot of hair back then and a beard too! In the steelworks where I served my apprenticeship, they had a lot of overhead cranes, these all had a cross travel bogie, called crabs. These had 4 wheels, on 2 axles, one powered one not. The axles were generally made from solid steel about 3in in diameter, up to 7ft long and having 2 - twin flanged wheels about 10in diameter and 3in wide, again made from solid steel. I’ve know idea how much a complete set weighed, but they were very heavy! During night shifts, when management were not on site, we would occasionally hold weight lifting competitions to see who, or indeed anyone, could lift a set over their heads. They weren’t lifted from the floor, but from a trestle, which was roughly waist height, very few could actually lift one, I was among a handful who could get it over my head. It used to be a right nuisance between England and France when teh clock changes were on different dates and trains had to be altered twice in as many weeks to suit marketable arrival or departure times. We were in effect on Central European Time (CET) for a couple of weeks which was not only a nuisance in workload terms but also meant that if during that time I was at a meeting in Paris or Brussels I got home an hour later than usual. One of the best things the EU ever did was to synchronise clock change dates across the entire EU. But with the normal one hour difference a bit of fun could be had as it meant you could - if a train was available - you could easily see in the New Year twice and celebrate both occasions with suitable quantities of alcohol in a local hostelry. you could also do it via teh Chunnel shuttle but vehicle drivers of course had to stay dry in both France and England 14

pH
This afternoon, I spent 21 minutes (I was staring at a clock, so I know exactly) moving the clock in the car one hour forward. The process combined two things that have been complained about recently in this topic: over-complicated car electronics and ‘summer’ time. ”Before adjusting the clock, be sure to change the combination meter display (colour LCD) to a screen other than the menu screen entering screen.” Aaaaaargh! 1

chrisf
Greetings one and all It was a year ago today that I last went to a concert. Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham were their normal sublime selves at The Stables and it was just a lovely night. Then the Voice of Doom spoke from Downing Street and the world changed. Yesterday I responded to an announcement from St Neots Folk Club and reserved a place at a session in a couple of months' time featuring the Hut People. I like them very much. Gary Hammond has a collection of over 700 percussion instruments, including a pair of squeaky pigs. His bandmate Sam Pirt plays piano acccordion and step-dances, though not at the same time. You're missing a trick there, Sam, for Simon Care of the esteemed band Banter plays the melodeon while dancing. In fairness, the melodeon is a much more compact instrument than the accordion. It is such a shame that the audience will be limited to 25 souls, for this is the legacy of that ruddy virus. That said, it's a start, and a very welcome one. Thanks to those who advised on DVD players. I have some e-browsing to do. Best wishes to all Chris 15

Bear had a call from old work buddy last night - he's the son of an Italian POW in WW2, in a camp in Wales; when the war ended he decided to stay put in Wales. Buddy is tri-lingual as a result (English/Welsh/Italian) which is rather impressive in Bear's book. Anyway, buddy was in Full Rant mode, as follows: He pointed out that in the last few months his family has lost 3 (or was it 4?) family members (none to C-19). They were allowed 12 at the funerals, with IIRC a further 8 outside. No more, due to covid rules. So why a few thousand people can bitch, moan, break the law, put others (and their families) at risk, complain about their human rights etc. etc. for someone they're not even related to/never met/wouldn't know them if they passed them in the street etc. because they were being denied their "right" to "grieve" in a park proved most entertaining. When he got onto use use of riot police and baton charges you could tell he perhaps wasn't altogether happy..... Bear does recall one of those present at the demo being somewhat aggrieved because "she doesn't like being told what to do". Hmmm. Wouldn't it have been better if all the money spent sorry, wasted on flowers was instead donated to a suitable charity instead? (Bear is in danger of also entering Rant mode here) Anyway, buddy from Wales provided Bear with a most entertaining conversation. Mention the word "Brexit" and he can REALLY get going... Bear must get his little furry ar5e in gear now - things to do before the Tiler arrives at 9 for a look at the floor before he heads off to the local Topps Tiles (I suspect) for supplies and then cracks on with the job.... 15 1 1 3

When I was younger (and fitter) I could easily bear hug fridge freezers and move them around if required. Two of us lifted a TR6 body off its chassis once.. that was heavy! Have a good day!
