I have just discovered that all assets including bank accounts are frozen when you die*. That means that any costs and fees are down to the executor of the will and they are only repaid after probate has been completed. It seems the best way to avoid it is to take out life insurance, something I have never bothered with as my estate is more than enough to cover funeral and other costs. *This is because some executors have been known to dip their fingers in to the estate. My experience (from earlier this year) is that accounts are frozen but some banks/BS will allow executors to pay certain bills (such as funeral expenses, HMRC (IHT) and one or two more I can't immediately recall) before probate. It may be down to the particular circumstances but one bank has already transferred the money out of the original account and probate hasn't been granted. (I hear from several reliable sources they are currently running badly behind, mostly due to the obvious reason). I think there is a threshold (currently £30,000) below which probate need not be granted. Though depending on the institution's rules, they will probably want to see the death certificate and the will, might want you to sign an indemnity against claims from beneficiaries and will only pay into a particular account. It does seem to vary from one organisation to another. 16

tigerburnie
Evening all, nice enough day, cold but mostly dry, I spent an hour or so running wheels over parallel bits of metal, I have a fried chip in one of the wheeled things and I don't mean one of the potato variety either, voltage reaches the chip, but it will not move. This is a modified split chassis Bachman model, that has been drilled and the chip hard wired in, not sure why it should have failed as it worked ok last time. A small amount of the indoor "G" word, some seeds were sown and that was about it for the day. 5

RMweb Premium southern42 Posted March 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2021 ‘ evening all from red dragon land. Some sunshine today and a bit of cutting up for the Cakebox to convert wooden stirrers into concrete blocks. Stirrers are not quite long enough so I had to be inventive! Glueing the pieces together next... And thinking about making cake & trifle for Sunday. Fitt and Elfie psyching up for cake day. Take care all and play safe. ————- Best wishes Polly 17

It is not a pleasant task - probably too many memories - but someone will no doubt do it for you for a small fee, and make a discovery that could be worth a lot of money. A decent auctioneer (there are some) will give a fair valuation on things you might think are worth money and also hopefully pick up gems which you didn't notice - I know of something which an auctioneer found that way when he was looking at largely worthless stuff and it was a small piece of china which sold for thousands but had been bought new for no more than £ or two. Even if you think the deceased had nothing of value you can be surprised and you need to be careful. After dad had died I recovered something from under a bed and covered in dust and that resulted in several auction lots bring in a three figure sum. It's something I've found is full of opportunities for others to make hay at your/the estate's expense. There's a big difference between making a profit and profiteering. Avoiding the latter was why I was selling off a large collection of m**** r****** locos and stock in the recent past for a (sadly former) friend of mine and his family. It is something I wonder about myself for when my time comes. I think one useful counter-measure is a detailed letter of wishes indicating values and sources of further information/potential buyers who aren't going to rip your executors/beneficiaries off. 8 hours ago, Tony_S said: There is a service called “Tell us Once” available in some areas that deals with many of the official contact requirements. .... Weather ... Thursday part two .... changeable is probably the most polite word I could use. Double reefed topsails still required. An interesting day at the coalface, not short on activity or interaction but not upsetting or worrying, so it'll do. Some training done of new recruits, very positive feedback received. In one instance, I was compared to a BBC presenter - not sure if that's good or bad objectively but it was meant as a compliment, so gladly accepted as such. That sort of thing does make you feel you're making a difference. Time for some brain lubricant while I compose a suitable limerick for a friend's birthday.. RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted March 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 12, 2021 Only 100? Tch. Even our old Beemer goes faster than that. No speed limit here out of town of course..... Wind finally dying down a bit, so it is raining instead. I can't see us getting rid of covid in a hurry this time, although it does look like we're past the peak. Only unmasked people seem to be the elderly, some of whom apparently reported in town (Ramsey - the Bright Lights but not the Big City) didn't know about a lockdown! #sigh# Deb's first week has gone well, settling in now, getting on well with her manager who is grateful to have a right hand gurl who understands both the works of vehicles and Government financial procedures! 23

Younger people of darker colour are typically the least likely to be wearing face-coverings (though the entire population seems equally incapable of wearing them correctly) and of refusing to accept advice and direction in that regard. The same section of the community is also the least likely in our collective House of Fun experience to play by the lockdown rules. They are also the most likely to complain about race-based harassment when spoken to about their behaviour and that includes - again within my first-hand experience - being removed from railway premises for failing to obey the stay-home requirement by an officer of the same sex and colour. You wouldn't know there was a lockdown now. Numbers travelling by train are still a mere fraction of what they were but have climbed back to around the 30 - 40% mark; this time last year it was 5 - 10%. This has been the first week for over a year when "Move down the platform", "Move right inside" and "Allow others off first" announcements have been required because of the numbers. Out and about the streets around the Hill of Strawberries are almost as busy as they would normally be. Most shops are not yet open of course but most catering establishments are - there is always a way to do takeaway, it seems. On our evening stroll tonight we encountered groups of school-age children skateboarding and generally being young people. Almost every day we find groups of 20 - 30 gathered in the public gardens. We have recorded no positive tests in the past week - so far. People are bored and with schools back the younger ones have taken their return to class to mean they are also free to socialise as they please as freely as they please any time anywhere. Which is not the case according to Uncle Boris. It is time to put Captain Grumpy to bed. Goodnight all. Sleep safe and well. 12 2

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted March 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2021 Evening all from Estuary-Land. When it comes to disposing of assets I will ask for anything that my relatives do not want such as furniture be disposed of via the local hospice charity. They do house clearances free of charge and if they find cash stuffed into a mattress or any other overlooked valuable item they will inform the family. My model railway items will be placed in the hands of SEERS who will auction them off for a small percentage.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted March 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2021 Good evening everyone The weather stayed sunny for the rest of the day, but the wind grew steadily stronger as the day progressed, but by teatime it had all but gone. The temperature remained in single figures all day though, the highest it got was 8C, but I beat it felt a lot colder with that wind! Just as it was getting dark, the rain started again, it’s still raining now. Well after this morning’s 2 shopping trips, I’ve done absolutely bu99er all since. That is unless you count doing a couple of sudoku puzzles and reading a book nothing, but that’s what I did for the rest of this afternoon. 16
