Popular Post iL Dottore
Morning All, Interesting posts about various experiences in getting vaccinated. Due to various factors, Switzerland was late in ordering vaccines, so although the Bundesamt has ordered 30 million doses - enough to vaccinate each Swiss resident several times over - supply issues mean that the vaccination programme really hasn’t made much progress. Additionally, SwissMedic (the regulatory authority) not approving the AZ/Oxford vaccine (“not enough data”). I may be looking at being vaccinated by mid year, if lucky... Regarding tales of skulduggery, evasion and outright “untruthfulness” by certain GP Practices (as recounted on these pages), there’s a lot to be said in favour of the cold antiseptic glare of media attention. Perhaps an informative call to a story hungry news outlet may help “realign the surgery’s thinking”??? A few words of encouragement for Simon. I had a DVT (it was a relatively rare side effect of the COX2 inhibitors, a drug I was taking for its supposed superior NSAID effect) which necessitated several weeks of treatment and everything was handled by (including definitive diagnosis) by the hematologist in his office. The treatment consisted of oral warfarin and subcutaneous injections of a low molecular weight heparin. INR (test for prothrombin) once a week was done to titrate the dose necessary for effective therapy (you don’t want to have such a high dose of warfarin that your blood does not clot at all). The only drawback (and it wasn’t any sort of drawback for me) is that the therapy is not for the faint-hearted given that the low molecular weight heparin injections have to be self administered. Life did not change one bit (in fact I even went holiday whilst on treatment) and the only adverse event experienced was cutaneous bruising from the heparin injections. It does seem scary at the time of diagnosis (given that the potential complications of a DVT can be very serious indeed), but once you are on definitive treatment and are regularly and closely monitored, there is a sense of having everything under control and the whole situation fades into the background and you just get on with life. I am coming to the conclusion, or is that the realisation, that I am distinctly different from most people (or “strange“ or “weird“ as many of those who know me may claim) because I have a very relaxed attitude about things being done to the crumbling edifice that is my body. Providing I have adequate analgesia or anaesthesia, I am quite happy to undergo any sort of procedure and often I’m most interested in seeing the pros do their work. Funnily enough, although I can watch any sort of procedure being done on humans (but only “live”, not on film/TV/video), I’m much more sensitive about seeing procedures done on animals (specifically dogs and cats). Which is probably why I could never be a vet, I would find it difficult dealing with animals in pain, even though I would know - intellectually - that to relieve suffering sometimes painful procedures are needed (as to inflicting pain on people? Absolutely no problems with that!). On that veterinary note, I bid you all a great Saturday. 16 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 20, 2021 For some obscure reason the editor put up a postbof mine from a few days ago. Random. Good moaning to all and of course Sundry. Despite the best efforts of the wind machine wecare still a long way from Ikea. It's dry but windy and relatively warm. First off, happy birthday for Chris. Simon, hope the DVT gets sorted. A very good and long lunch was had yesterday at some friends in the village. Thusxweconly had a small rather late supper. Prawns in butter and garlic. 6 of each that needed eating. Today it's our usual conversation with young Emily. I wonder what new word shevis going to delight us with this morning, then coffee with some friends a couple of miles away, some shed time this afternoon then certain Zoom session, will we all be singing Happy Birthday. Regards to all. Jamie 23

Well prior to going to bed I was lying on the sofa with waves of pain throughout my body, caused by lifting a transconductance Amplifier which weighs 25kg. Not so much it's weight was the problem but it sits on the bottom shelf of a rack of equipment in a corner of the lab. I should have asked for help.. I can't help but wonder if Uber drivers and others on sueing for workers rights, are wanting to be both sides of the coin. self employed choosing when to work, but wanting sick pay etc. I can't see how that model of employment can work in the future. It will put up Ubers costs, and I think make it an uneconomic business. It will also possibly make the Uber drivers liable for more tax, like journalists and others working for the BBC who lost a case with the HMRC they were being paid via their own sole owner companies to avoid tax but the courts decided they were bbc employees. That variety of being self employed but permanently working for another company may disappear, affecting contract workers in many businesses including my industry where senior engineers are often contract workers in some form. Bear here... Hurt my back at work? Lost count..... Make sure you put it in the accident book, even if it stops hurting. It might come back to haunt you further down the line and evidence of a work-related injury may be required. As for Uber, the non-Uber cabbies (the London Black Cabs in particular) must be laughing their socks off; they've lost so much trade over the years to cut-price Uber drivers and now it seems certain that prices will have to rise, evening up the playing field. There certainly is truth in Uber drivers "having their cake and eating it" scenario (if only....) here methinks. As for "scummy subbies" (sorry - that's what some full-time employees at my place of work attendance used to [quietly] refer to them as) effectively being employees - certainly. They were raking in serious dosh and on top of that some were using all sorts of dodges to minimise the amount of tax they paid. As an example, a friend set up his own company - one employee (him) and one shareholder (him) - and paid himself a meagre salary. Every year he also received a huge bonus, which I believe was taxed at a much lower rate (Corporate Rate Tax?). Not sure how it worked, but it saved him thousands. As he also worked from home at times (even pre-covid) he had various "angles" on gas & leccy bills, that huge flat-screen TV (for use when linked to his Laptop....yeah, right....) etc etc. and claimed tax allowances accordingly. However, the taxman rules changed very recently (some time last year?) and being a subbie was not nearly as lucrative as it had been in previous years - ISTR there were many hundreds of subbies at work and loads were banging out cos' of the rule changes. In other news, Bear wishes a Happy Birthday to Chrisf and may oodles of cake be heading your way** **Just so long as it's not from Bear's secret SCR though....
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 20, 2021 Ey up! Happy Birthday @chrisf. I hope yout trip goes well. I has a boss when I first started to work designing bits of rockets. I said "this doesn't work" he asked "why".. "I don't know" .. his response was " well stop bleating about and find the problem and fix it" which I would direct at the statistic @Coombe Bartonhas picked up on. (I got the same email yesterday). today apart from watching the pond next door..or watching a potentially dangerous tree felling exercise in next doors garden...is open for me to do things for me..until 4pm that is. enjoy your day if you can, try and get the Black Dog back in its kennel if you can. baz 21

RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 20, 2021 Good morning all and a very Happy Birthday to Chris. Dry, mild and breezy here with sunshine promised as well. Not posted much in the last couple of days as that dark animal has been sniffing around here as well. Just about got it caged but finding it difficult to motivate myself to do anything useful. I'm still full of aches and pains and also, like everyone else we're both fed up with not seeing family and friends. It's particularly galling when we're keeping to the rules but it's obvious that two or three families in our road aren't. I did take the car for a run yesterday as I hadn't driven it for over 2 weeks. Needed to get a bit of shopping and petrol anyway as it was about to start running on excitement and then came home the very long way round to warm it up properly. Almost wished I hadn't as a stupid b###### in a small white van overtook at high speed and just clipped my door mirror. Luckily it withstood the impact and it isn't even marked but his seemed to be hanging off He didn't stop of course and sped off at even greater speed. Didn't get his number but it would've been my word against his anyway. Moron. This morning I'm baking some individual Bakewell tarts and then I'll be watching rugby until 16.00hrs when something exceedingly important seems to be happening. I'll record the rest of the match for 'ron. There, I feel a bit better now. Have a good one, Bob. 3
leopardml2341
Mornin' folks, from a distinctly wet and blustery South Derbyshire. Weather nothing like what was forecast when I planned today's activities, not that they were anything exciting. The laundry will now be dried in the dryer, summershed doors will be hung and Doggo will be walked, not necessarily in that order. Breakfast first though, but what to have? Tea number 1 has been drunk, Doggo is still resolutely asleep (or at least pretending to be) but you can guarantee he'll hear the fridge door open Hopefully I'll see some of you later at the virtual meet, until then make the most of your day. Popular Post Erichill16
Morning All, Happy birthday Chris. A couple of years ago, probably when the controversial tv ad with the orangutan in was released I decided to avoid palm oil. Unfortunately at the same time I need3d to go on gluten free diet and avoiding palm oil has become almost impossible. When black dog comes, it’s like a wave crashing, one minute ok then feel like stuck in the quick sand. Hope everyone has good day, and black dogs have a week off. RMweb Gold PeterBB Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2021 Well for some reason a post that did not work when submitted has come up now, as did one last evening. Anyway Happy Birthday Chris - last seen at Nottingham a year or two ago. Let us hope that the many black dogs appearing, the idea of 'not wanting to do anything' seems to getting almost universal, will be kennelled later this pm. Maybe even some m**ing may come back. Perhaps too we may see a view of the 'cement lake' . Why oh why must the news permanently discuss what might be on Monday - this is the sort of thing that causes the confusion rather than the actual with people 'believing' and thus 'jumping the gun'. 'What about FB shooting itself in the foot? Enough said - rant over. Enough said.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2021 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Happy birthday ChrisF. Woken up by Arthur Itis this morning but he's gone away now without chemical assistance. It might be a side effect from Monday's jab as on Wednesday I woke up with almost every joint feeling as if it was glued together but when I started moving there was no pain and the joints soon loosened up. Now time to run a bath, be back later. 1

Popular Post andyram
Morning one and all. Many happy returns to @chrisf. I hope you enjoy your day. Continuing greetings to all those who are battling illness of any kind and also to fellow black dog sufferers. It is amazing to read just how many people are out there battling their own dark canine. As @leopardml2341 has already stated the weather here in South Derbyshire is grey, blustery and damp. Both Sarah and I have benefitted from an improved night's sleep. Her side effects have now diminished to a dull ache in the arm at the jab point. I also confess to feeling much brighter and the dog's grip seems to have diminished for the time being. Today's plans involve a run up to the shop for a click and collect appointment later this morning. I think Amber is wanting to come too so that she can get out of the house for a while. There are two boxes worth of stock which need pricing so I may set her on with the pricing gun - she likes doing that. Hopefully all commitments will be clear in time for me to join the virtual meet up later this afternoon. Until then - stay safe. Andy 21

RMweb Premium petethemole Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2021 Afternoon all; dull here but not particularly windy, showers are forecast. Happy Birthday to Chris. Catching up on missed threads last night I noticed that Stefan Cush of The Men They Couldn't Hang had passed away recently. I'm not sure if they're Chris's cup of tea, but his rendering of The Green Fields Of France was classic. In addition to laundry, shopping and picking up Mrs mole's inhalers (and paying for them) I have to go to our lock-up and inspect the up-and-over door which is 'wonky'. Enjoy the Zoom meeting if you're taking part; I don't have the right tech, although Mrs mole and Martyn do. I don't like to borrow a laptop as I don't like using hers and his is in almost constant use alongside his gaming PC. Have a good day, stay elfy. RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted February 20, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 20, 2021 Morning all, Happy birthday Chris and many more of them - looks like it's my turn to buy the tea the next time we meet. weather reasonable with occasional patches of sunshine being alleged by today's crop of seaweed from the Exe Estuary so following a visit to Tesco we will launch out on an adventure and visit the council tip, suitably, socially distanced of course, and there it will be my turn to exit the car after herself's turn to be the one entering Tesco. Simon I hope the DVT is sorted soon although appropriate medication seems to do the job. In my case what probably started as a DVT finished up as a clot in the lung - where it fortunately caused me some pain and was actually picked up on an X-Ray. That meant the best part of a week in hospital and daily shots of heperin plus a lung scan which took place after the heperin course had started so it looked more like some sort of 'star wars' screensaver rather than a nasty old (or new) clot. Surviving that one was an interesting statistic especially as the previous year when I had a collapsed lung I'd actually coughed up a blood clot. All (I hope) now well in the past. Incidentally for Flavio's info there is a clearly laid down complaints procedure in the NHS in respect of GP practices although it might not be ideal. In addition an active practice PPG makes a difference too (they're meeting via Zoom during the pandemic so remain active) and they do get results - like a total shakeout some time back of what was Checkpoint Charlene and is now a team of helpful receptionists. The Uber situation could now get very interesting because presumably they would have to be on a sort of 'zero hours +' contract. The BR system was very simple - what you got out (in terms of leave etc) as a part-timer was pro-rata to the hours you had put in. Similarly the pension on my zero hours contract was calculated on the same basis and as it is my 3rd pension it is very logically taxed at Basic Rate. But the admin load on Uber will increase so their costs will go up and the real winners - I hope - will be the black cab drivers. HMRC will no doubt be lumbered with greater complexity and even more self-assessment forms to process ever year. As for subbies I agree 100% with Poly, we had them in the IT dept at my last big railway employer and it was easy to see how it worked - 6 months a year charging a mint and the other 6 months on holiday in far flung places. One of 'em even used to divide his working part of the year between us and a Govt dept (where he worked on exactly the same basis - as a self-employed subbie, but that was in the late 1990s). Havea good day one and all and see those who are there later. And stay safe. 17 1 1
