Besides all the really early Fenders were built in Fullerton by Mexican guys anyway... My favourite cover is: "Take it Easy" by The Eagles (their first single), before anyone froths at the mouth this, song was written by Jackson Brown and Glen Frey but Jackson recorded it first.... Pete, I think I will investigate getting a Mexican Fender. I have heard pretty good things about them. About the only annoying thing about the entry level Fenders is that you don’t get a case and sometimes they even come without a gig bag. Unfortunately, around my neck of the woods, they seem to have run out of Fender Telecasters in either Butterscotch Blonde or Roasted Pine - the best colours for a Tele for my taste (unfortunately, even if available, Roasted Pine is a finish reserved for the more expensive Teles). But if it played really well, then a Tele in Polar White would be also acceptable (BTW Pete, I’ve sent you a PM). On the subject of covers and original artists, one original artist whose songs have been covered by others, but who remains a striking and original musician is Tom Waits. Apart from the Eagles having a big hit with one of his songs (Ol’ 55) and, lately, Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart doing a great cover version of his song Chocolate Jesus, I find Tom Waits to have an engaging sense of humour in his music (“The piano has been drinking“ is one example). Off to see what Lucy is up to in the garden, I think she has a bit of a stomach upset and has gone out into the garden to eat some grass, which apparently seems to help her. Enjoy Thursday! iD 14 1

chrisf
Greetings one and all There are several musical matters this morning. Flavio wants to categorise “Deck of Cards”. I advise against this, and constraining music within boundaries. Years of being pleasantly surprised at Sidmouth Folk Festival by what some of the performers offer the audiences have cured me of any tendency in that direction. When a dance band launches into such gems as “Calling All Workers” or the Dr Who theme and when a band from across the Atlantic offer “Stop Stop Stop”, a hit for the Hollies written by Graham Gouldman, as a traditional song, the best thing to do is stop worrying and enjoy the experience. “Deck of Cards” has been the butt of many wicked parodies over the years. Quite right too. Cover versions: for a good rocking version of “Bad Moon Rising” I commend that by the Battlefield Band, with bagpipes in full cry. The version of “River Deep Mountain High” by Sing Out Bristol is as tremendous as that song can be without the Spector wall of sound. As far as I know the only recording available is a snippet on YouTube but the live performance made a lasting impression on me on a hot afternoon in July 2018. Rick, the songs of Eric Bogle are masterpieces without exception. Every time I hear the sultry June Tabor sing “No Man’s Land” I shiver. I have yet to hear the version by the Fureys that charted in Ireland. I’ve seen A band called Colcannon and have an idea that they hailed from Oz. I have also seen Paul Metsers, who wrote “Farewell to the Gold” and has good reason to thank Nic Jones for raising its profile. It serves to remind me that it is far too long since I have been to a concert. Andyram, it is good to learn that Sarah got her jab with no further admin difficulty. Best wishes to all Chris 18

Chris, if you like that, try some of the traditional songs ‘reworked’ by the Real McKenzies - “Banks of Loch Lomond” or “Wha saw the 42nd” as examples. 10 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2021 Editor cleared, Good moaning to one and all. I had a successful trip out with my mate Giovanni. He's a Brit with dual Italian/British citizenship. He doesn't speak much French and has tried to get by speaking Italian. He'd been to his Mairie to try and get planning permission to put some extra windows in the front wall of the house that they've bought. Speaking Italian had not gone down well. Anyway I went with him and threatened to fit him with a muzzle if he opened his mouth. We do know the mayor as she's a neighbour of some friends of ours. Ayway the meeting went well and I think we've got it sorted. He's going to help me fit the shower door when it arrives. The afternoon was warm and sunny and several ginger biscuits were consumed. This morning it's a trip ou to stock up on liquid essentials at the vineyard/distillery and pay a couple of bills. This afternoon may involve some time in the shed. Regards to all. I do like their version of The "Final Countdown", by Europe. Massed kazoos sound very impressive and should be used more in my opinion. John Otways version of House Of The rising Sun is noteworthy due to him turning it into a question and answer session with the crowd. 10 1

Beth Hart really gives the song a great going over. So much so, it’s hard to decide which is the best interpretation: the Ike and Tina Turner original or the Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa cover. Beth Hart really has the voice for a great Soul/R&B/Gospel singer (and the streetwise “tough broad” look and persona to go with it). Not a dame to mess with... Finally, Tangerine Dream’s Burning Bar (from the the soundtrack of Thief, with James Caan) Put it on the car stereo, put it on a loop, crank it up to “11” and I defy you to keep to the speed limit.... iD Edited February 18, 2021 by iL Dottore

The Lurker
Greetings all from Sidcup where the sun is streaming in through the window. Today is going to be a day of back to back calls. 4 in a row then a half hour gap until another one, then I have managed to squirrel away an hour before another. Most of the calls will be inconclusive but never mind, they have to be done. Generally I tend to prefer a cover over an original if (assuming I like the song) I heard it first; for example, I far prefer Siouxsie and the Banshees' version of "Dear Prudence" to the Beatles' original, and likewise the Byrd's version of "Mr Tambourine Man", but it does not always hold true; Johnny Cash's version of "One" is preferable to U2's, and his version of "Mercy Seat" is up there with the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds original. Picking a favourite cover is for me quite difficult because there have been some crackers; the aforementioned Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" is up there. The Sisters of Mercy's versions of "Jolene" and "Emma" (the Hot Chocolate song) are both superb as was their version of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" and there are plenty of others. Maybe I will get a chance to choose one in between all of the calls.... Have a good day all 14

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2021 Music I know little of, I know what I like, and John Otway isn't it.. He's one of the few musicians / singers? I've seen live. He was hanging upside down from the rafters of a barn / entertainment room at the back of a pub in Milton Keynes (The Talbot, Shenley?), he was screeching something out.. I went back to the bar.. Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Hare, 6.5 hours solid sleep good for me.. Ben the reluctant Collie decided he would go out this morning but only plodded around not a happy Collie. He was quite upset by military aircraft playing top gun over us with full reheat, from late afternoon into the evening yesterday... On they way home yesterday I went via the orange shed to collect more MDF.. The forecast looks good for the weekend, so I'm going to set up outside a couple of trestles (something unmentionable for the putting on of) and demolish the 4 sheets down into shelf width and upright width strips. much easier to handle inside the workshop.. I've now got 3 resistors back from Gwiwer land ( near current residence) NPL Teddington. So as they have new values I'm measuring all the comparable resistors referenced to them.. That'll keep me occupied for most of the day.. Time for.. The Next one.. 23
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2021 Morning. It's drying out now after a wet and windy night (outside), miserable 4c. P-Bear, it would be unprofessional of Andyram to mention who is causing him issues, but I'm well out of the trade and won't be going back, so I can hint that the longer wavelength of the colour spectrum is probably the issue, in my experience! &^%$ing useless in recent times in fact, although they used to be OK, and ripped us off on returns when we wound up the business (all the other suppliers were brilliant). I felt sorry for the staff on the phones as it wasn't their fault things were so bad, there was a hell of a turnover of such staff too - tells it all. 9 1 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2021 Rick her indoors always says.. "the ukele should be banned and all burnt" why .. schools started to "teach" the kids how to "play" the ukele and it is a s!d to keep in tune .. In other news.. yesterday the man in a van obviously gave next door a good price as he is back today in the pouring rain with his mini excavator digging very deep foundations for a "mini" wall. I did explain where the new earth cables were in the garden and also where the Virgin cable was (they hadn't spotted them). I asked how, by digging all the grass up and covering it all in concrete(!) it would stop the water from running into our garden (well.. it comes into your garden first (!) .. our garden is lower than theirs. They are supposed to be putting in a ground drain to make sure the water runs away but have dug the "foundations" first. Apparently the 6' fence will be on the boundary line.. Meanwhile I am about to phone a retired member of the Environment Agency (Aka "Dr Flood" )of his views about the drainage proposal. It won't do any good though as they are just focussed on doubling the size of the house....to make a bigger profit! Best bit was when I mentioned that with CoVid people are looking for house with more outside space.. and the probable return of stamp duty.. the look of concern was great! RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 18, 2021 @iL Dottore not a lot to say.. herself worked for Norlin who owned Gibson for a time. BB King had a problem with Lucille while on tour so they dropped it off at the offices on Tottenham Court Road for a technician to have a look at it. While waiting fort he technician to arrive (he lived in Essex) herself was temporary custodian of Lucille. She was glad to hand it over as she wasn't allowed to put it down/lean it against a wall/ let others touch it... She couldn't play it as she has percussion and flute training.. not the guitar Baz
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 18, 2021 I'm no fan of covers, I just nearly always prefer the originals of music, but the Siouxsie and the Banshees Dear Prudence mentioned above is the only one I can think of just now that I prefer. I actually like Ukulele music - James Hill, Victoria Vox and Taimane Gardner are worth a look, for a wide range of what can be wrung from one! 17 1
