Mum took me there but at dinner time thought school had finished so walked home ... not realising that was to be the first of many school days to come. Nothing else to report that I can think of then suddenly ... memory of earlier today. Working through a factual history article adding my observations and the 'missing' bits. One part needed a telephone call to my brother to confirm a specific part ... he remembered other bits as well. The came a eureka moment. Our road had 8 bombs in 1941 with one house actually destroyed because the rest hit the road. Then July 1944 a massive strike with a lot of damage and many people killed. Earlier in the document I had noted the damage but had missed one part out that reminded me of something Dad said years ago - there had been no warning. It suddenly occurred to me that the missing place was the foundry that was immediately opposite our road and in the middle of the damaged church hall and Duke of Cambridge pub. The article said flying bomb -1944 - but that late in the day it would have been a V2 rocket (ballistic missile of the day), that was the obvious target, why there was no warning and why there was so much damage. This time it must have been because the earlier bombs had missed the foundry. Only taken 70 odd years to work that out! This of course was the time I had no injury because having chased my ball under the kitchen sink was still there when the glass from the windows blew in. The foundry wouldn't have been the target, London (if that's where you were) or another city would be. With the technology available at the time, they could point a V2 in the desired direction and adjust the launcher elevation and the fuel load to arrive in the approximate area. The randomness coupled with the supersonic speed and thus unexpected arrival were what made it a "terror weapon". Missiles able to hit a particular building came a bit later. 1 13 2
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 19, 2021 Poly, Mrs NHN accepted today after getting confirmation of terms and conditions - they have changed for new civil serpents here, but she transfers on existing as she has 31 years seniority, wanted that confirmation first! Senior manager a little quiet, we think there is a storm brewing that she has caused herself and realisation is dawning. Next up manager very pleased for her, and is off himself soon with the re-organisation, and the very top manager (layers, this is the civil service....even the Manx one is the same) also said some nice words and he's not given to that as a rule, ex-army type. As for Sue's death, no is the unfortunate answer. The car that killed her did a runner and hasn't been located, the CCTV at that spot not working despite it being by a school - 'kin useless) and no witnesses, second car had stopped after seeing her in the road, they are exonerated as no damage to their vehicle. So sad, so young. 2 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 19, 2021 We were going to sit down together and watch the architecture programme on the Yesterday TV channel but the marmalade is at some sort of crucial stage. The programme is recording so not a problem. We did manage to have dinner together as Aditi had initially thought she needed to supervise the big saucepan of orangey stuff. RMweb Premium petethemole Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2021 Regarding early memories, I retain various images from when I was about 2-4. Riding in a pushchair; I had two, one quite large, white and heavy and a small folding one with an orange cloth seat and blue folding frame. In these I was taken to 'The Clinic' to be weighed and supplied with National Health orange juice. Shopping at 'The Consumers' Tea Co.' where Mum placed her order to be delivered later in the week. I have some very clear memories of my first seaside holiday at Holland-on-Sea, near Clacton. Aged 4, I didn't like it. Despite loving trains I was scared out of my wits at what must have been Clacton station by sudden, loud blast of steam right next to me as I walked along the platform. With hindsight I expect it was cylinder drain cocks opening. Also aged four my first morning at school is still vivid, but not unpleasant.

When he left on his first day, he said to the teacher "I had fun. I won't be coming back again.". He's actually setled in quite well. His cousin is in the same 'class', so that helps. My second cousin's lad came out with the following whilst at pre-school (or early primary school?): "I don't like fireworks...they p1ss me off...." Apparently no-one knows where he picked that up from..... 50 minutes ago, Tony_S said: I have quite a few memories from age 3. My Grandfather trying to drown me at Lyme Regis was quite memorable. One teacher at junior school kept getting my name wrong, kept calling me Simon Harrison. At the time my dad was partner in a firm.of Estate agents called Harrison's and he sold their house for them. 16
RMweb Premium Popular Post petethemole Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 19, 2021 (edited) Also when I was four, our road, developed in the '20s and '30s was unmade and unadopted, and in a very poor state. The residents tried to get the council to take it over and surface it to no avail, so they clubbed together to fund the surfacing, doing most of the work themselves with the aid of a steam roller and a tar boiler. I spent hours in the front garden watching. The local paper covered it. Of course when it was done the council adopted the road. Dad is at the rear of the group on the left. Jim King and his brother Joe owned the local newsagent/sweet shop. Arthur Wagstaffe, a Weshman, was a milkman. His wife taught me at school in what would now be Year 5. ©Copyright Ampthill Images 2004/2013. Popular Post tigerburnie
When were nippers we used to play cards with my Dad on a Friday night, Poker, we each began with a shillings worth of ha'pennies and at the end if we had won any over the shillings worth we could keep them. Cue my youngest brother at junior school a couple of weeks into his first term, mother gets called over by the teacher. "I asked your son if he could count, we were impressed when he went from 1 to 10, less so when he went Jack, Queen, King and Ace". Mother did explain, but she used to avoid that teachers gaze or tell me to bring him home from school.

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2021 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Peter BB's V2 could possibly have been a V1, the last V1's arrived about September 1944, after that the advancing allied forces had overrun the launch sites. The sites where both missiles struck are well recorded so it would be easy to check. Time to put the kettle on, be back later. 7 1

Popular Post Erichill16
Evening All, Cant really say what you first memories were of. I remember a few bits but can’t put then in any sort of chronological order. Sometimes I may be ‘imagining’ the memo from a photo I’ve been shown. My cousin used to collect the Marvel/DC comics and I remember him having a surveyor or structural engineer round because he was having problems with his house. When the bloke went into the attic he said no bl00dy wonder with all that lot up here. Unfortunately he had to get rid of the lot and spend (some?) the money on repairs. Got Sydney today so been on a good walk with him, done some domestic chores and then a zoom meeting with the committee of the MRC. Much work or money needs to be spent on the new club rooms so that was the main topic on the agenda. MY team lost again. I know Jamie likes his Eccles cakes, .polybear likes his lemon drizzle cake and Flavio likes fruit cake and his specialty ‘fruit and nut’ cake and I think H.H likes everything. I like coffee cake but not too much butter cream and icing and certainly no nuts. Would anyone else like to make a confession? With that thought I’ll wish you all Goodnight Robert 20

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted January 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 19, 2021 Good evening everyone The weather has been bl00dy awful all day, so I’ve not set foot out of the house at all. The morning was spent sat at the computer in the office downstairs, I’ve printed off a set of makeshift decals (ie on paper) to test on the control panel. If they fir and I like the look of them, I’ll try printing them out on some waterslide decal paper. This will be a first as I haven’t done this before, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they work out ok. After dinner, instead of watching a couple of documentaries, Sheila joined me and we watched a film instead ‘The Young Victoria’. I wasn’t really looking forward to seeing this, but it turned out to be quite good. Anyway, there is some more room on the digi-recorder now. My back is is slowly improving, so I think I’ll carry on resting it for the rest of the week. I tried those physio exercises that Dave mentioned earlier, I can’t say there’s been any improvement yet, but I’ve only done them once, I’ll do them a few more times to see if they do anything for me. Goodnight all 3 1

RMweb Premium TheQ Posted January 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2021 Mooring Awl, can't sleep.. I can remember just a couple events, pre school, which are in Cyprus, several in my first primary School days but not the first day, in Northern Ireland, then memories really start in England by which time I was still just 5 years old. In NI one of my memories was also a steam powered steam roller, trundlling up and down outside the married quarters in RAF Ballykelly. Myself and my sisters were born in hospitals in ,3 different countries, but I remember being told to go out and play for my little brothers birth, but I was ten then. He now towers over me but he will always be my little brother.. Time to try for more sleep. 10
