Par humbug. Her upstairs can't make her mind up, typical women. It started off raining first thing. Dog didn't want to go out. Fine said I  we'll take the car, yes I know very indulgent but it was you know p.........g down. So off we trundle, dog happy that she's out of the rain. Get to paper shop no paper. Ok says I let's try next shop, no paper there either. Only ended up in Asda don't we. Dog now unhappy as she's not had here morning work. You just can't win sometimes.

First day of school.  Mum took me there but at dinner time thought school had finished so walked home ... not realising that was to be the first of many school days to come.

 

Nothing else to report that I can think of then suddenly  ... memory of earlier today.  Working through a factual history article adding my observations and the 'missing' bits.  One part needed a telephone call to my brother to confirm a specific part ... he remembered other bits as well.  The came a eureka moment.

 

Our road had 8 bombs in 1941 with one house actually destroyed because the rest hit the road.  Then July 1944 a massive strike with a lot of damage and many people killed.  Earlier in the document I had noted the damage but had missed  one part out that reminded me of something Dad said years ago - there had been no warning.  It suddenly occurred to me that the missing place was the foundry that was immediately opposite our road and in the middle of the damaged church hall and Duke of Cambridge pub.  The article said flying bomb -1944 - but that late in the day it would have been a V2 rocket (ballistic missile of the day), that was the obvious target, why there was no warning and why there was so much damage.  This time it must have been because the earlier bombs had missed the foundry.  Only taken 70 odd years to work that out!

 

This of course was the time I had no injury because having chased my ball under the kitchen sink was still there when the glass from the windows blew in.

Greetings from a very wet burrow in Wharfedale. Shortly to be renamed Sea View...

 

Currently taking a break from the of paperwork. I was going to take a handful of letters to the postbox but it's throwing a chuckitdarn with bells on, so will wait a while in the foolish hope it slackens a bit later. I suspect 'pah!' might be said more than once. The duckpond out back is a fair size, much more and I'll be able to advertise water-skiing lessons. 

 

It's noticeably milder today, if it wasn't for the rain I fear I might have succumbed to the G word for a couple of hours. However, as it is, I shall be virtuous and continue paperwork admin. Though I wasn't impressed to find we've lost the phone connection. It's likely to be someone fiddling in a telecomms cabinet, there have been some weird 'trills' from the phone today and a crackling instead of a dial tone. We usually get this when someone's messing about in a cabinet but the timing isn't great. Something stronger than 'Pah!' was muttered. 

 

Now back to studying the complaints procedure and trying to work out what stage it was at before death intervened. Sadly for many firms, it's not an opportunity to learn and do better in the future but more, how very dare you ...:

I have very few memories of school, odd bits from junior school, less at high school and even fewer from grammar school, mostly remember being in trouble, one occasion, I was bent over to receive a belt on the backside with a shoe in a games lesson and I let out a fart, much to the amusement of my mates all watching, put the teacher off his aim too as it didn't hurt at all .................

Earliest memories? well standing in a water trough in a nearby field to home keeping the cows away from getting a drink. ( I was 2 at the time...)

 

Memories from various schools including when I picked up my knee injury at a Rugby Match.. (the X Ray taken of it 7 years ago suggested I should, perhaps, have visited a hospital when it happened).

Rain finally eased to a trickle, 4 inches in the unreliable rain gauge, although it's probably not far off today at it mostly came down vertically.

 

Bad language issuing from the kitchen/diner that indicates Mrs NHN's work day isn't proceeding too well, I'd guess senior manager has once again not helped when needed by the tone of it.  Still - not long now, her light is brightly on at the end of the tunnel.  

 

5 covidiots locked up here yesterday, two of whom were in a car on its roof up on the mountain, oops I think I mentioned this earlier.  I'd love to know the story behind that one!  7 days with no community transmission, despite those idiots attempts.  we have the possibility of a slight easing of lockdown later in the week if this continues.

Early memories for me, ceryainly from when I was 3. As farcas I can tell my earliest is sitting in the waiting room at Chesterfield Hospital having some sort of check up/treatment for a broken collar bone. A modelling friend was a junior Dr there at the time and confirmed my memories of the layout and decor. I remember  my first day at nursery school, probably aged 4, standing bawling my head off as I watched my mother walking away. As soon as she turned the corner I stopped crying and ran in to play.

 

However I can't remember  the four things I wad told to do this morning.

When we lived in Swad we had Morrisons Home Delivery, when we moved here, my wife changed our details, but every time she put in an order, it said we live to far from Swadlincote, (YES 170 miles to far), even the staff could not sort it out, so we now use Sainsburys.

I've had mi tea and just finishing mi beer as I type this. Don't know about manic Monday, this has definitely been manic Tuesday. Everyone at work seems to have wanted a piece of my day today, so much so that much of my planned tasks have not been completed. My boss put a diff slant on it though and suggested I view it from the perspective of 'they want my time because they know I'll know' - that made me feel a bit better about it.

 

River Trent is very high hereabouts and with much more rain had in the Peak District and Staffordshire moorlands I expect it will be even higher tomorrow, if I get chance I'll venture out with the camera.

 

In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the day and eat well!

Afternoon all

 

I can remember my Mum asking me if i wanted a brother or sister i must have been 2 and a half. I remember being in hospital at 3 and the dreaded allergy test and my Dad bought me a Siku crane it had red plastic pipes you could lay.

Back to 2021.

Had really bad night mares last night, i usually get them but this was really bad.

  Finally got back to sleep at 7am missed the call from sleep nurse but Swmbo dealt with that. They havnt received the sd card from the cpap machine i posted on the 5th of Jan just hope it is delayed in post.

 Whilst i was asleep someone knocked on door claiming to want to read the electric meter which is in the Garage

 Eldest (16) answered the door and got his mum then told them politly to get stuffed his dads self shielding so no ones coming in. He is built like a brick outside latrine. He also told him he didnt show any id

  The Dachshund security force wasnt required on this occasion.

We think it was a bogus call it just seems odd to me . Were they casing the joint

Swmbo tried to call police on 101 but gave up after 15 mins on hold

Security measures have been stepped up the intruder deterrent (pick axe handle) is in an easy to reach situation.

On a brighter note the heating is turned off today no gas burning gladdens my heart as a parsimonious Yorkshire man

As predicted, the lawn mower stayed in the shed but I was asked to prune the plants growing on an arch in the garden. I did so but I suspected that the arch was so corroded it really needed replacing. One has been ordered, they do vary in price a lot but we have gone for something slightly more rugged than before but not ridiculously so.   I also pruned some ivy which is determined to break into the summerhouse. I don’t think I am supposed to do too much work at present  waving my arms above head height but it seemed ok. 
We did have a walk but turned back at the end of our road as there seemed to be more people than usual walking along. Probably the new vaccination centre clients.  
Marmalade manufacture is progressing today. I don’t seem to be required.

Moanin - ONE DAY TO GO!

 

The PUZZLE from yesterday is solved - although it's still rather peculiar to say the least!

As some mentioned, possibly a result of outsourced delivery - had plenty of those in the past but always had clear Amazon packaging/labelling.

At 5:30PM yesterday, Amazon FINALLY reported in my account that the item had been delivered.

Still "odd" as it says it was delivered Monday at 11:15AM rather than the day before in the early evening and the UPS tracking number now in the account show is was simply delivered to "Minnesota Lakes, MN". An ACTUAL town but about 100 miles SOUTH of me!

So we simply close the puzzle, about as confused as we were at the onset - I've got my tea, I guess that's all that really matters 

 

Late checking in today as the Long Island client have gone into the first "panic" of the New Year deciding (under pressure from the board) that preliminary financial statements for the past month/year are needed by Thursday. Again, seems like $67+ MILLION are wandering around incorrectly summarized so we're re-working reports to solve it

 

Nothing else happening - fortunately I guess

I moved house and town at age six, so memories are easy to divide into ‘before’ and ‘after’ that. I distinctly remember my sister being born when I was three and a couple of months, and I have a couple of memories from before she appeared.

 

Both those memories involved ships - not too surprising since I grew up on Clydeside. One is a ‘snapshot’ of my dad and uncle walking up a bank from a beach, with a red-funnelled ship in the background. Apparently, it was the ‘Aquitania’, being scrapped at Faslane in 1950. The other is of ‘liberty boats’ coming ashore from a Navy ship anchored off Rothesay in early 1951.

Supply was turned off at 0830 - hopefully we'll be back on by teatime. The contractors knock off by about 1630 as the light fades. I have an electric oven and gas hob but can always microwave some frozen veg in case of delay.  

 

TBH, at the moment, any out-of-the-ordinary occurrence provides a welcome distraction....

Everything back up and running at 1730. Managed to keep the house OK all day just by leaving the plinth-mounted fan heater in the kitchen on and the door open.

 

I really felt for the gas contractors today, they must have been soaked through after the day we've had here. 

 

Hopefully they'll finish putting the road back down  tomorrow so we aren't half way between the traffic lights. Getting out has been OK but reversing in has been a pain if there's another car behind, and it's not really safe to back out here even when the road isn't down to half-width!

Toot on the flute - short and sweet. Today's episode of Father Brown duly watched. A browse or two for little people to crew on things that run on metal rails and watching said things move short distances to and fro.

 

Such an exciting life we lead... 

But I am not complaining.

Bear can remember a very early (first?) day at primary school - my Mum had me pinned to the ground in the foyer whilst Mrs. Hardy was trying her very hardest to put my plimsolls on; Bear was responding by kicking like a mule on speed - I had it in my head that if they couldn't get my plimsolls on then I couldn't go to school.  Bear lost.  Nowadays both would've been liable for child abuse allegations for subjecting me to such torture.

 

I can also remember gate-crashing my first party; my brother (3 years older) got an invite to his mate's birthday party over the road - Bear didn't get an invite (I'm guessing I was pre-school age at the time.  I was over the back gate and turned up at the party....his mum responded with jelly and ice cream.  Job done.

 

I also recall throwing and chasing a matchbox round the front garden - I think my mum had gone to the flicks and my so-called father was supposedly looking after me (I use the term in the very loosest terms - so far as I know he's still alive unfortunately [my brother hasn't said otherwise] but I've not seen him in well over 40 years, which is a very good thing as I'd rather like to batter him for all the harm he's done).  Anyway, I digress....

Bear ended up tripping up the raised edge of the front garden path, going face down into a privet hedge and impaling his face - I came within a gnat's of losing an eye.  A night in hospital resulted; I recall my mum coming to collect me and the nurse getting the biggest teddy I'd ever seen off the top of a cupboard for me to look at.  I'd like to have been a fly on the wall when my mum came home from the flicks to learn what had happened.

Bear also recalls NHN mentioning the very sad loss of a good friend - have the police managed to track down and charge the driver responsible yet? I do hope so.

My Grandad finished the war coming home on the Aquitania from Halifax Nova Scotia after dropping HMS  Rannee at Norfolk Virginia

Our grandson has just started pre-school at age three and three quarters. When he left on his first day, he said to the teacher "I had fun. I won't be coming back again.". He's actually setled in quite well. His cousin is in the same 'class', so that helps.
