Baz I am a retired man, and I shovel our drive regularly while snow is still falling. (I also have hobbies, read books, and watch and play sports.) Why do I shovel the drive in the snow? Our drive is sloped at about 1in 4. It has to be at least reasonably clear to get the car up into the carport. If I leave shovelling until the snow stops, there may be a foot of depth. That has to be moved sideways by the shovelful. If I do it when there’s a couple of inches, I can just plow it all the way down and to the side at the road. Also, if lying snow partially melts, then re-freezes, there is no way to get the resulting ice off the drive and the car has to stay on the narrow road in front of the house till the thaw. (Now you’re going to tell me your neighbour’s drive is dead flat. ) 16 2

A woolly day today, racked up with stomach cramps. They do seem to be reducing now, fortunately. Nothing achieved this afternoon as a result The good news is that tomorrow does promise to be dry, though there is a real risk that Bear may well freeze his bitz off whilst cutting ply in the back garden. Then it'll be fixing the resulting battens to the door sub-frame, and if all goes well I'll then fit a new extractor fan to the bathroom ceiling - a like for like replacement. The existing unit has an adjustable cut-off timer board which seems to be fu-barred now (the fan cuts off a few seconds after the switch is pulled - it should be able to be set to run for anything up to another 20 minutes). I've also noted that the fan impeller seems slow to actually start turning, so that's iffy too. I may well keep the timer circuit and fault-find it - ISTR the previous unit went the same way too, so they've obviously got an issue with the design or component quality. 9 1

The timer circuit in our Vent Axia fan failed exhibiting the same symptoms as yours. I couldn’t see any obvious overheated components or pcb damage. I did find an online source of a replacement circuit board. I ordered it and was then refunded as out of stock at wholesaler and manufacturer. So I ordered a replacement fan which was externally identical. However the timer circuit is completely different. I will have a look at the old one to see if I can see any fault or just use it as a non timer fan but after struggling in the loft to replace it is is just put to one side at the moment. 16 3

I always reverse onto the drive for safety reasons but in snow and ice this can cause problems as the pavement in front of the drive is well used and the trodden down snow makes the front wheels of the car slip. The only solution is to have plenty of rock salt handy.

Here, you can be fined under bylaws for not clearing the sidewalk in front of your property of snow and ice. Given that, I would assume you could be sued by anyone who fell on a sidewalk you hadn’t cleared. We’re lucky in that regard. I said in my earlier post that the road in front of our house is narrow. It’s technically a lane, not a street, and doesn’t have a sidewalk. 20 1

That is true when I worked for the Council we had to inspect certain areas during the winter months and sign a schedule as to what action was taken. For snowfall like we have had today we were given mapped areas to clear and grit in that order. For example we had to clear walkways in the town centre then grit once the snow was cleared. Other area we couldn't touch unless specifically authorised by a Supervisor because once cleared it had to be maintained as clear. We would often end up emptying bins suburban parades of shops where people were slipping and sliding all over but we were not allowed to grit because it couldn't be maintained over weekends when there was only a skeleton crew on Sorry to drone on but I hope this answers some of your question 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted January 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 14, 2021 Rain did turn to snow this morning on my commute. After constant overnight rain, I was concerned about my daily commute down the back roads, but the rain eased off just as I turned onto them. A mile later and there's a couple inches of snow and falling steadily. Not enough to stop a Northener. 3 miles from work, the snow stops and the roads are clear - especially where I thought the flooding would occur - across Rathmell B*tt*ms. No problems returning home - just a few slushy bits remaining of the earlier snow. A very intensive and busy last week and this week at work has seen stage one testing of a prototype new product virtually completed. Reports have been written and sent to the designers. The next iteration will probably arrive from the designer/builder in either 2 or 6 weeks depending upon how much work they get done on it before their annual two-week shutdown. I'm hoping for 6, as it may give us some chance of catching up the backlog of "normal" work. Although that won't be easy whilst WFH alternate weeks. We are awaiting arrival of a container at our warehouse. It contains 700 or so cartons - not on pallets - and will have to be manually unloaded. Thankfully, there are only a few of them that may be heavy, but as there are so many cartons in total, I think the carton weights have been minimised by packing the heavy items in small quantities and thus making up more outer cartons. Original delivery was to be tomorrow morning, but the pickup deadline from Felixstowe was missed and it'll now be early next week. Although I'm booked to WFH, my services have been volunteered to help - but with a condition. Later in the week, with a fair wind, I have a long overdue steroid injection in my spine - I won't be helping to unload that day. In the meantime, it's off to my pre-heated shed to apply paint to some moulded plastic items. Stay safe and sane folks. 17

RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted January 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 14, 2021 Evening all, A distinct absence of snow here. Bubbles were spotted floating over the House of Fun briefly which caused heads to turn but their source remained unidentified. The rain which has been falling since last night has finally stopped and allowed me to deal with the bins and remove the recycling to the skips at the corner of the block without need of waterproofing. Mushroom risotto was provided for dinner cooked by Dr. SWMBO and which proved extremely satisfying. She suggested croissants for breakfast but I don't have the time on a school day to bake them so they will be for the weekend instead. I could of course get up a half-hour earlier, warm the oven and bake croissants at 4.30am but why??? It's time for bed. Domestic Engineering duties are complete, all emails and messages have been replied to. The muggertee is empty. It must be time ..... Sleep well. G'night all. 24
RMweb Premium Popular Post Dave Hunt Posted January 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 14, 2021 (edited) Not a great deal to report today except that my Dad got an appointment for his first vaccination jab on Saturday at Oswestry, which is about 20 miles away. There was no suggestion of transport, just a warning that being late may result in the appointment being cancelled. Fortunately, of course, I can take him but what would happen if another 97 year-old didn't have such support? Since they are only up to the Hs in the over 80s I think that mere youngsters like Jill and me in our early 70s will have a while to wait yet. Tomorrow we will be spending a lot of time Zooming as Jill's book club are having a meeting, I'm having a get-together with some ex-RAF buddies and we are both taking part in a family meeting. I wonder what it's like to talk to a group people in the same room? I think I've forgotten. I spotted a classic case of covidiocy this morning at the market. Two blokes wearing masks stopped for a chat and each one pulled his mask down when talking. The mind boggles sometimes. Last but not least, welcome aboard Foden.
