Afternoon/evening all.

Been slightly messed around as I booked a day off for tomorrow to look after Jamie while her mum did an extra day at work, then was stood down. So, what to do...? Take the day off anyway, obviously! <_<

Plan to take the bike out tomorrow for a short ride, as we're meant to have a lovely day tomorrow.

My great auntie lost her marbles once she hit 90. She believed burglars had been in the house, that her neighbour who looked after her was stealing from her... Eventually it became too much and it was necessary for her to go into a residential home, though sadly she didn't last more than a couple of weeks after that.

That's what we are desperately trying to avoid, Mike.

It has long been a fear she has had.

Bodily functions are still in control but if they go then we will try paying a carer for personal needs ...

... and then getting her to accept the help.

It's extremely difficult, I know. Unfortunately we weren't in a position to look after her ourselves, I was at Uni in St Andrews, Dad was working in Durham and my great auntie lived near Dover. Will keep fingers crossed for you.

We were near Großer Feldberg – I was looking roughly southeast when I took this photo.

That would make sense - there aren't too many landmarks south east of the Großer Feldberg. A few factories, but miles of flat land!

There's a good restaurant on the Großer Feldberg though!

In case you have not seen here is the truly terrifying yet interesting video of the Tornado hitting downtown Springfield, Mass and particularly its' effect on the Connecticut River (which is a quite substantial water course by British standards):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5plBdPBNj8

The things to watch out for are when it enters the river beside the rail bridge just how fast its' inflow affects the river. Then watch how its' reach extends out and how high the standing waves become. Then when it closes on the road bridge (note the traffic on it) a large volume of the river actually rises up and crosses the bridge from left to right - can you imagine being on that bridge? Unfortunately it seems to me that one or two vehicles may have been lost.

Finally look at the debris field swirling around it - those rectangles are assumed to be 4' by 8' sheets of plywood or particle board, being hit by one of those would do anyone damage.

Best, Pete.

That's staggering Pete! I had no idea that New England was bothered by twisters. I always assumed that this was something largely restricted to the Great Plains.

They get the most because of the unique geographic nature: Rockies to the left, Plains in the middle, Gulf to the South, Tundra to the north. Cold dry air coming down South clashing with Warm moist air going North. Unfortunately every State in the Union get's at least (on average) one tornado per annum.

The funny thing is that if you take countries per capita then Bangladesh has the most and the UK is just in the top five........

Best, Pete.

Morning all.

Holy cow, Pete, that's scary... Guess we can call ourselves lucky that, on balance, twisters are not really a frequent phenomenon over here. I did, in fact, wonder what a F12 type tornado would be like on a variety of occasions, highly unlikely as one of these would be – thankfully!

There's a gentle breeze outside this morning and around 15°, so I guess we'll be in for another nice day. Depending on whether or not I receive a small package today, I may do some loco superdetailing over the weekend – or go railfanning, perhaps ;) .

Cheers!

Morning all,

Pete, that's really scary, just shows the power of Mother Nature.... As to the oldies losing there marbles, bin-there-dun-that, got the T-shirt & scars.. my Gran could be really funny at times with the stuff she came out with....as to the couple sat by the letter box, if it wasn't so sad it would be comical......

Weather pretty much the same here, but there might be rain, which will really help the cable laying today! (if it turns up!)

Morning All,

That's a pretty terrifying video Pete. Just goes to prove that we are by and large completely powerless against the forces of nature. That's a good example of Pareidolia at the beginning too!

I'm off on a bicycle tour with a colleague today. Should be fun, because I am so used to riding on my own.

Have a good day everyone...

Thanks for posting that video Pete. I hadn't seen it before so it was pretty scary stuff. I can't imagine what it must have been like sitting on that bridge....

My mother is 88, but thankfully OK. She gets muddled over which day of the week it is, but is much better since we bought her a new clock. It only has one hand and the dial shows Monday, Tuesday etc....I could do with one of those. :D

Day four of the building works. Beam is in so acrows will come down today. Inspectors were here yesterday and all is OK. Major dust day today as all the old plasterboard has to come down before electrics, plubing and new plasterwork goes into place. That just leaves floor tiling and decorating to do...

Morning all.

It is warm and sunny here and 25C is forecast for this afternoon.

I think it was a tornado that went along a nearby road (last year?) causing some damage to fences and roofing. I have seen water spouts moving along the Thames but I suspect they are tiny compared to the ones elsewhere.

Trev. Are you laying cables inside or outside. When my brother worked as a telecommunications engineer in Nigeria he also managed to acquire experience in air con systems as well.

Gordon, Do you do the decorating yourself or will the builders do that as well? I really need to decorate but I just can't summon up the enthusiasm to start. I suspect once Aditi has submitted her dissertation. (it should be sent to her tutor this weekend ) she may notice the state of the walls so I may be buying industrial quantities of magnolia matt emulsion soon.

Just the therapy she needs after all that work, Tony.

I hope she has forgotten my comment (last time we decorated, probably at our previous house) that she should (due to her lack of height ) specialise in painting the skirting boards.

I tried to log on at 6:00 am today but there was something wrong at this end and it kept on telling me it could not find te server. Yesterday turned quite bright with sun but there was zero warmth in it. Back to grey overcast today

"...sitting on that bridge...."

Under the circumstances Gordon, in my case I'd imagine there was a consonant missing in that phrase!

Interesting facts from our Pete again. I'd no idea Britain was so affected. While I've seen the odd dust devil on a hot day and a waterspout once in the North Sea, The only tornado I've heard of is one in Birmingham a couple of years back which to be fair did make a bit of a mess!

I imagine with its vast open steppes, Russia gets quite a few too!

Dave.
