Beth and I visited a Walmart in Roseville, California (it happens to be next to a huge Union Pacific marshalling yard by a strange coincidence) when we were in the US last year. Sure enough there was a Walmartian at the checkout in front of us. I wanted to get a picture but was told very firmly to put my phone away. As to what she was wearing, the outer covering was many yards of highly stretched lycra. As to what was underneath I dare not even contemplate. She couldn't get through the checkout without turning sideways. Jamie

Lot of friends have bee to Guernsey for a break, and found it....small - even when you live on a small island! My Mrs grew up there and hates the place, she won;t go back. Ah another plan goes up in flames! We do have a caravan parked on the drive. We could go in there and shut the door to everthying and everyone else. A couple of years ago we went to Svalbard and stayed at Longyearbyen and that is a small place. It’s the only ‘town’ on the island and if you leave the ‘city limits’ you need to carry a gun or go with someone who’s got one in case you encounter a polar bear. When I told mum where we gaining and we needed a gun to go walking she was mortified . I read on the BBC website that a polar bear has in fact killed someone there this week. Glad our resident bear has been kept busy in the house recently. Robert 21

RMweb Premium Popular Post NGT6 1315 Posted August 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 29, 2020 Cheers all. We safely returned from the northern climes yesterday and I’m delighted to notice things have markedly cooled down here, too. Just as well that this happened before I need to be back to work tomorrow! Timetables will be normalised by Monday, and by Thursday, failing to wear a face mask in shops and on public transport without a valid medical requirement can be fined with €60 by power of a revised public health and safety ordinance for Saxony. Other German states had imposed similar fines much earlier, and some of these are significantly higher even - as much as €150 in Bavaria and Westphalia, for example. Given the increasing number of „ignorers“, I guess this step was inevitable... Be safe, folks. Congrats and commies as appropriate. Nite-y! 14

pH
We have a local bear again. Up until a couple of years ago, we saw bears fairly regularly in the neighborhood, but none since then. We have presumed the growing urban sprawl has increased the distance between us and their natural habitat and stopped their visits. Last night, our daughter-in-law and the grandkids drove off after a visit. About three minutes later, she phoned - we assumed she had left something behind. Instead, it was as to tell us they had seen a huge black bear cross in front of them and go into a yard less than 100 yards from our house. So - make sure the bear clips are always on the bins, and make a bit of noise leaving the house for any reason after dusk. (And I wonder what proportion of our grape crop we’re going to get to harvest this year.) 17

simontaylor484
At least all we have to worry about is the odd urban fox or cat that may try to raid the bins. I dont think our dachshund could stand up to a bear. 14 1

pH
26 minutes ago, tigerburnie said: Shame they shot the bear though It is unfortunate, but many bear/human interactions do not turn out well for the bear. We get all kinds of advice about how to make things less inviting for bears - always clip your bins, keep barbecues clean, pick up windfall fruit etc. But once a bear gets hooked on easy pickings from humans (‘garbage bear’) it’s almost a certain death sentence. The Conservation Service will try to trap and relocate nuisance bears, but it seldom works - they usually find their way back. One grizzly that was trapped and relocated travelled several hundred kilometres ‘home’, across two mountain ranges, two railways, two busy highways and a major river. 1

Evening all. Still here. Staying sane by way of avoiding certain topics of conversation and spending much of the day cutting and tidying the hedges around the block. Avoidance is not the best therapy but currently is the least-worst. Many thanks for the messages of support both here and elsewhere. They are very much appreciated. In other news the Amazing Dancing Rhinoceros has moved out from upstairs and will be on her way to Taiwan in a month from now. It would have been today but for a certain potentially lethal crow covid virus. We await the arrival of replacement rhinoceri shortly. Tiz time. Popular Post Florence Locomotive Works
Afternoon all, Ive been offline lately due to school, so apologies for that. Not much of any interest has happened in the past 5 days, mostly online learning. Another run was had on the kart today, and was very successful. The sprocket ratio was altered to give greater oomph (technical term that) out of the corners and was a great improvement. The photo is of the kart sitting on its stand, without the side bodywork, waiting to be loaded into the pickup. I’ve embarked on another ridiculously obscure live steam project, essentially it’s making a model of a 1914 McLaren traction engine used in Teria Del Fuego. If anybody is interested I’ll post about to here. Said engine is pictured below as preserved in Punta Arenas. Other than that I have little to report, so as always, stay healthy, Douglas *Unfortunately do to my new life schedule these weekly posts will probably be standard now. Might manage one on my lunch break though, we'll see. 21

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted August 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 29, 2020 great to hear that our senior pilot is about to escape - and apparently didn't even need to build a glider in the attic in order to get away, clever stuff. The lad went to Lewes today and saw no crowds of protestors but the inside of numerous ale houses although he seems to have survived the experience. The roast chicken for dinner was most enjoyable - tomorrow evening the remains will come cold with salad and a baked potato. 19
