RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 18, 2020 Ahhh, we're back! Day 2 of retirement - no lists, but goodwill vacuum cleaning undertaken. iD, well I'm cargopants and T shirts I'm afraid, as a response to wearing a uniform of one kind or another most of my school, FE and working life. I got paid to go to college....company cadet. However, I certainly am well travelled, both from my 8 years in the Merch and since, only Australia is missing from my passport of major countries, and a few minor ones. I live on a whacky little island somewhere 'up north', have 5 motorcycles, a garden and garage full of trains of various scales and act my shoe size, not my age. I have had a lot of different jobs (never got sacked though!) as I careered through life out of control. That should count! Grace's parents are pretty much non-conformist in life also, suits us down to the ground. Steve had a tough upbringing without either parent on scene, and to be where he is now with a Masters degree and a good career makes us proud, we're the nearest thing he has to supportive parents. Although he is in touch (sort of) with his real parents, they aren't of much use. Sarah's story is not much different! 7
chrisf
Greetings one and all! Never have I had such a soporific cheese sandwich. It's later than I thought. Thanks to Neil for showing pics of amazing Grace. I confess that I normally find baby koalas more attractive than baby humans but there is something about that baby human to gladden the heart. While we have been off air I wondered several times where all those extras students are going to live. These days, I gather, first year students are offered accommodation that is a considerable advance on the halls of my day, at a price of course, but it is at a premium in many places. Where I lived for my first two years at UEA started off life as barracks on a disused RAF station, Horsham St Faith since you ask. I fear that the increased demand for flats etc will flush some slums out of the woodwork. It gets no easier being a student. To demonstrate convincingly that I know much less about IT than I should, I did wonder why the e-placard proclaiming the absence of the forum earlier referred to Amsterdam. Someone will know. Best wishes to all Chris 16 1 1

Best wishes to all Chris Ah those barracks, I passed the site not an hour ago on Fifers lane, a few years ago they were demolished and a housing estate built on the site. The married quarters across the road have been sold off, and the personnel who lived there from RAF Neatishead now have to travel 50miles each way from RAF Honington to work. A journey of well over an hour in an RAF bus. As is usual they had to do the MQs up to sell them off, central heating was fitted and double glazing something the military never had. That disused RAF Station is Norwich Airport and has been since, 1971, it closing for the RAF in 67. It was something of a sore point the students were occupying RAF Barracks when there was such a shortage at Coltishall they were putting beds in corridors for the airmen. Afternoon awl, now someone has put a shilling in the meter. Ben the I like chasing squirrels Collie was busy on morning Patrol, though he missed the deer further down. The way to work this morning was littered with straw and branches, so obviously tractors towing trailers loaded with straw had gone through while the rain was loading down the branches. Last weeks major system still Isn't finished, first there was a software problem, which wasn't fixed till Late Monday, then, a stand alone standard resistor, was found to be two wire connected, which was fine with the old system, but the updated requires 4 wire. So that has been sent to be reworked, then I'll have to remeasure it. This week's major system has been completed except for the cross check which was left running. I've just been out to inspect the boat... Some pictures.. 8 14
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 18, 2020 Good afternoon everyone Like quite a few others, I was also unable to look in this morning. Today I have completed 64 circuits of our nearest star and I was treated to breakfast in bed, a very rare treat mid-week. However, not long after eating breakfast we were up as Sheila had an early morning appointment at the hairdresser, she was also having her nails done too. So I was left home alone and the skies were looking very dark. But a chanced it and went outside and made a start doing a bit of dead heading and pruning. This continued until dinner, when I emptied my waste bag into the garden bin and then packed away all gardening tools. After dinner I then spent the afternoon in the workshop where I removed the extra circuit boards I'd fitted on Sunday. A few more wires were added before I'd ran out of afternoon, so I packed up and came in for another muggertea. Stay safe, stay sane, enjoy whatever you have planned for the rest of the day, back later. Brian 18

simontaylor484
Allerton Bywater had changed loads too. I remember the railway line that ran along the side of the muck stacks over the River Aire joining the main line near Cas rlfc. I also remember a bus turning out of the depot on the end of Wheldon lane the wrong way and hitting the bridge

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2020 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Happy 64th birthday Brian, the only thing with breakfast in bed is it makes a mess of the sheets. The sun is shining so I was thinking about going outside to continue with the shed. Well I thought about it and I'm still indoors. Looking through a group on Farcebook that deals with the London borough that I used to work for. What caught my eye was a picture including one of the councils armoured Transit vans used for delivering wage packets to outlying sites. These were manned by a driver and security officer in the cab and a clerk in the back to dish out the pay packets. He sat in splendid isolation on a rotating 'captains chair' that also slid backwards and forwards and from side to side on rails. I might also add that the only view out when the vehicle was in motion was through the sliding communication hatch through to the cab. The favourite trick of the security staff if they had a newbie in the back was to make sure that he was securely strapped into the chair then surreptitiously release the bolts that stop it sliding on the rails and rotating. They then shut the hatch and proceeded to accelerate a brake sharply and take corners at speed which left the victim helplessly taking a roller coaster ride. When the victim was released the air was decidedly blue. 2

The plant contained a considerable quantity of phosgene at all times as an intermediary in the production of some sort of timber treatment. If that had happened with a northerly wind things could have got interesting. Jamie 6

RMweb Premium AndyB Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2020 (edited) Evening all. Many happy returns, Brian. Just seen The Q's photos. Very nice bit of woodwork there. The shine on that wouldn't disgrace the Cipriani! First day back in the office. Ploughed through a couple of hundred emails and messages in an attempt to get situational awareness up to speed. Pretending to be dead is a good riposte for that sort of “joker”. I actually first saw that when I was at school. Halls tend to have sufficient accommodation to mop up a proportion of 2nd / 3rd and post grad students. I'd guess that any surfeit of first years displace 2nd & 3rd years. Post grads tend to prefer to live off campus. Students with families can also be accommodated on campus. It's also not unknown for halls to be configured to cater for students who may prefer quieter / no alcohol / vibrant / single or multi gender halls. You're quite right that accommodation has upped it's game in the last few decades. In my first year, four of my class mates ended up sleeping on the library floor for the first week. The course tutor ended up driving them round the Eastend trying to find them digs. 9 5
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2020 HB Brian, hope you're having a great day. Chippy tea night here, that's the big excitement of the day! Rather wet afternoon too, which started when I was out for a walk and a mile from home. Pah! 2 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted August 18, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 18, 2020 (edited) Here’s to many more circuits Brian. This afternoon tried ringing Mum for a couple of hours so I could get her shopping list but no answer. Normally she will ring me lunchtime so started to get a little concerned. I then drove the 8 miles and just before getting to her place my mobile rang. Of course I couldn’t answer or find anywhere to pull over so arrived there to find that sh had forgotten to call me and then spent a few hours in the garden which she rarely can muster these days. A big relief that all was OK and now relaxing with a much needed few pints in our Harveys pub downing Lewis Castle Brown after doing the food shop for her. Tomorrow will drop off to her before theforcast heavy rain sets in. Edited August 18, 2020 by roundhouse 3 1
