RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted August 4, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) Two redundancies - the first one in 1989 was no real surprise as the company was not in the best of health. 7 weeks out of work before picking up a new job that involved global travel for short periods, often at short notice - good fun! Second one in 2002 was a shock. But it took me less than a couple of hours to get over it, as at the time, I was actively searching for a new job as it had become an unhappy place to work (I had taken two weeks stress-related leave a few months previously). Being "paid to go" was a bonus!. Like iD, SWMBO encouraged me to go down the self-employed route and I combined my like of driving, with the teaching/training aspect of the recently vacated employment and became a driving instructor. 13 years on and quite by chance, without looking to give up self-employment, fell into being employed within this hobby. Even more fun and enjoyment, except from the very occasional need to wear t-shirts that I posted pictures of a few days ago. On another note (and hopefully not in too much danger of the awl as this was observed via a work trip) And about 30 minutes later. (Only noticed the hand/finger after uploading - I was trying to block out the wind noise) Edited August 5, 2020 by newbryford

Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all I visited the bank yesterday morning. It has a pair of self-service tills which on a good day print out statements on request and enable the customer to move money from one account to another. Yesterday was not a good day. First one terrible twin and then the other declined to accept my debit card. I hailed the only visible member of staff. He was baffled. Oh dear. If the staff are baffled, what hope has the customer? He proffered his little blue device which tells you if your PIN is correct. It was. He disappeared to print the statement that I wanted. Here the in-bank technology falls short of that available to the customer, who is able to print a summary of balances in all his or her accounts, provided of course that the machine is working properly. Eventually the young man reappeared with a piece of paper on which the statement I wanted was printed and the summary of balances handwritten. While he was doing battle with the computer my eye was drawn to a poster extolling the virtues and properties of the bank's app. I have one of these on my mobile phone, which was at home on charge and so missed all the fun. Apparently it will allow me to download statements and many other goodies to my phone. I asked the young man, who must have wanted to see the back of me by now: "How can I print off a statement that I have downloaded to my phone?" The answer appears to be to e-mail it from my phone to my laptop. If that is an example of technology simplifying things, I'll pass, thanks. At least it got me out of the house. Best wishes to all Chris 1 1 1

As there is no offence of shooting a dog the young lady could have been charged with either Criminal Damage to thr dog or an animal cruelty offence but due to her age either would have been unlikely. Anyway good moaning from a sunny and soon to be warm Charente. Today the first task will be to give the hedges a much needed haircut before it gets too warm. After that I may continue with my efforts to makeca new hinge forca pair of Beth's glasses. The rotating psrt has been filed, drilled and tapped from a former locking bsr thatvwas on Long Preston's lever frame. Today's task will be to fit it to the rest of the frames. Hopefully this will result in me gaining some much needed brownie points. I will also inspect the trapline in the shed. Yesterdsys mouse catch was a good result for Morbier cheese but zero for white chocolate. I put some blue cheese down on two traps last night. Yesterdays catch was put out for recycling by the owls. RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 5, 2020 Morning all. I have already been out and placed our bin bags at the edge of our front lawn. Foxes or cats seem to have visited the bags of those who put them out last night. A pleasant day is forecast. If a similar one is forecast for Manchester I may watch some cricket. RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted August 5, 2020 (edited) Ey up! Spent some time being frozen to death on the cricket pitch at Harrogate yesterday A "friendly" game? Well one of the Lancashire players decided he doesn't need to heed the words of the umpire. I inquired after his knowledge of the laws.. of which he had very little. one of the other players gave the other (their umpire) a bit of verbals ..and he came over to ask what we should do... a first.. we decided a little discussion with the captain was necessary..after the game my colleague said it was nice that I was so supportive..... As for today.. housework day...Pah! Followed by cleaning the car as Beastie has grass cutting in the footwells.. Let's make Wednesday dance to our tune! Positive thoughts to all ERs. Sad. Cricket used to be one of the few sports where the umpires were given proper respect. I suppose we all remember Mike Gatting and an incident that changed international cricket forever as neutral umpires were appointed, many of them not very good. Having a third TV umpire in major games has also reduced the authority of and respect for the umpire on the pitch. Sad too that the other umpire was not expecting you to be 100% supportive. What have things come to? I think that at most levels of cricket, it is not satisfactory for umpires to be officiating their "own team". In this cynical age, people do not think that they will umpire neutrally (I recall encountering this nearly 20 years ago). Each club should nominate umpires to the league and those umpires should then umpire other clubs' matches. A club that can not supply an umpire should have points deducted. This is how it is done in some rugby competitions (note how I avoided the word "league" there). Not perfect but works reasonably well. 15

RMweb Premium AndyB Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2020 Morning all. <Rant mode on> A sashay onto faceachebook earlier revealed the latest quiz doing the rounds with academics, designed to extract their personal details. And how willingly they were playing. Why do supposedly intelligent people fall for this? I'm busy write a quiz for them.... "Write a 16-letter sequence that best describes your bank account number. A=1, B=2......" <Rant mode off> Chrisf to save you emailing stuff on your phone to your computer for printing I believe there's a print app. I know this to be true because whenever I need something printed I send it to my daughter's phone who switches on the printer, puts paper in it, replaces any low-ink cartridges, presses a button on her phone to "print", collates the papers and hands them to me. I believe there's a similar app for scanning. 15

Elswhere, someone was complaining that they mostly got two types of advert. The first for a medication to prevent snoring so their wife could get a good night’s sleep. (Can you guess what’s coming next?) The second for a different type of medicine designed to prevent his wife getting that good night’s sleep.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2020 Good morning everyone Yet again another night where we’ve had rain falling, thankfully it isn’t raining now, but looking at the forecast we may have some later. So, there may or may not be cricket played at Old Trafford today, meanwhile, I might attempt a little gardening this morning, but if rain stops play (see what I did there) I’ll return to working in the cellar, as I still have the control panel to paint. Stay safe, stay sane, enjoy whatever you have planned for the day, back later.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2020 Morning Debs.. As it happens @Joseph_Pestell over 50, over 60 and over 70 county rep teams all take their own Umpire. It is only neutral umpires when they move to semifinals and finals.of the League knock out rounds. It does work ok.. Baz 4 12
RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 5, 2020 Morning from a sunny Surrey. last night we spent some hours in our local Harveys pub drinking Lewes Castle Brown along with a friend who's first visit to a pub sine pre lockdown. Finished in Spoons on a dead cheap meal - sorry Andrew but we have very few places to eat in town. The Italian restaurant was bulldozed last year and Prezzo hasn't reopened and my other half didn't fancy the golden arches. I do need to persuade her to try the Thia food in the Junction though. Today is shed day working on Blackmoor and giving 34051 'Winston Churchill' a run. Re jobs, I haven't been made redundant even when hoping I would be 30 years ago so that I could travel to Oz with a friend for a few months and possibly find work there. My other half has been made redundant a few times but luckily her employers all paid out good redundancy amounts, one allowing us to extend a two week trip to Hawaii into an 11 week trip around North America then Europe. If only they had known that she was about to hand in her notice. She still had a large chunk left over and was offered a job not long after we returned from our travels. I was back at work only a week before they announced closing the company down but luckily I was one of only handful that was transferred to another company in the group. 19
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted August 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2020 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Thoughts are with the citizens of Beirut this morning. It appears that it is an accident, there was a fire in or near the warehouse where the ammonium nitrate was stored. The G word beckons, only zapping a few weeds, I've decided that the new shed can wait until this evening when its a bit cooler. It stands on the patio which faces almost due south and can get a bit warm in the sunshine so I'll wait until its cooler. 7 8

Simon G
Not surprisingly, our weather is the same as NHN’s over the water. Wet, wild and windy, and more suited to late autumn than summer. I emptied a bucket a couple of days ago, and it now has two inches of rain water in, so it has been very wet. I have been using some of the water out of the new water butt to fill our old disused oil tank. The oil had all been emptied out, so I plan to use the tank as a water store for the dry (!?!?!?!) spells next summer. As the tank still smells of oil, I plan to fill it with water, so that any residual oil can be floated off, then empty it again before refilling with clean water. As the tank capacity is 2500 litres, this will take a while. At present the tank filling is being down manually, but I plan to buy a suitable pump to fill it from the water butts, and also hopefully the use the same pump when watering the garden. 16
