RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 26, 2020 (edited) Evening awl, I think Intu owned about 15 Shopping Centres mostly the big ones.. The meaning of flags Nelsons famous flag message would be unreadable in today's international codes. As with the yellow flag Q, that's changed its meaning in various flag systems, It's hot 26 In this bedroom. I filled, sanded and painted the tiny radar aerial again at the MhRC. I intended to do more than that but half a bottle of Shiraz and the heat made me sleep.. Shiraz? Not my normal product of the Highlands and Islands? Yep some years ago I acquired 12 bottles, I started working my way through them when they disappeared...in a SWMBO reorganisation..well she's just had another reorganisation and they have reappeared with the words "why is this blocking up the pantry"... ( well they were hidden behind a wall of other stuff) So now I'm doing my best to reduce the blockage before they disappear again... I did put the A/C in the MhRC on, Ben the thinking Collie immediately deposited himself below the cooling vents.. A hot good night to you awl.. Smart doggy! My sister used to have a really dumb cat. She lived in Edmonton, and one year we bought her one of those small, ceramic fan heaters as a Christmas present. When she first turned it on and the fan started up, the cat ran out of the room. My sister brought the cat back and despite much struggling got the cat to the front of the heater. As soon as it felt the warm air, a lightbulb went on and it stopped struggling and settled down. Then, a couple of days later, she found the cat sitting at the heater, which was running, looking very puzzled. She picked the cat up and moved it from the back of the heater round to the front - another feline lightbulb moment!

RMweb Premium Dave Hunt Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 26, 2020 I bow to your superior knowledge Laurence. On 20 Squadron we had a unique aircraft that was an FGA9 with an FR10 nose carrying some of the FR10's cameras. we called it an FGRA 9.5 . I wouldn't imagine that the Mark was ever acknowledged in the various works on the Hunter. Dave 7

Popular Post Erichill16
Evening, Been a bit off it today, my balance has be not what it should be. There are a couple of ‘things’ that upset it, one is lack of sleep which I’ve been experiencing lately and this has restricted my activities today. Any way not to worry there’s always tomorrow. Did mange a few house chores and helped SWMBO in the garden. (Extra brownie points?) Goodnight Robert. ps Heard the thunder all around but the rain missed us out. 3 1

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 26, 2020 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Despite all the threats it hasn't rained yet, its just hot and sticky. The seaweed wranglers have promised rain for tomorrow, heavy showers. I e-mailed about the shed, they apologised for the no show of the shed. I'm going to give them another week then I'll cancel my order and go elsewhere. 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 26, 2020 Good evening everyone Well it’s been a funny old day, dull to start with and just as I entered the butchers it started to rain. It wasn’t too heavy and during the walk back it slowly seemed to get worse, luckily it’s only a 10 minute walk so I didn’t really get wet. Once back home I made myself a muggertea before heading off to the Trafford Centre. It’s getting quite busy there now, but not all the shops are open yet. I want there long, as I only had a few things in my list. After dinner I sat and pondered the scribblings I made yesterday and I’ve finally finished the latest circuit board. I’ve made 2 slightly different boards for the interrupters, as I’ve got 2 different types of 4 pole plugs sockets in stock, they’re both different sizes. I need 8 altogether and I can’t remember how many I have of each. I also need a bit of on-line research looking for replacement soldering irons, it’ll cost me just over £90 for the 2, but as I already have the soldering station, which as still in good condition, it seems daft not too. But to be fair, I didn’t actually buy the ones that have just broken, I acquired them when they closed our Bolton workshop in late 2004 and they were well over 10 years old when I got them, so they haven’t done bad really. Along with the soldering station, I got a few hand tools such metric tap and die set, sizes 3mm - 12mm, metric micrometer a couple of pairs of callipers. The evening was rounded off by opening a nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. Goodnight all 18 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted June 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 26, 2020 POETS was poeted. Then golf was golfed. There was a very distant rumble of thunder whilst stood on the first tee and we agreed that any more and we were off. Having a metal stick in your hand whilst stood in a field was not likely to have a good result. The forecast t/storms did not get any nearer and 13 holes later, we were walking off to a 6&5 result. Completed with a birdie 4 after a 200 yards or so with a 3-wood to about 4 feet! The semi-final of the Seniors Singles knockout is the next step. My game was "steady" whilst my opponent had a bit of a 'mare. (I can only hope he plays better in a couple of weeks, as he's my partner in the main doubles knockout.....) There is no club competition Saturday, so the weekend lie-in is planned for tomorrow before embarking on various tasks - the largest of which is chopping green stuff using powered blades. Sunday will be more hitting of a small white ball around a field. Enjoy the weekend folks. Cheers, Mick

It was numeric code "2" in the Popham signal flag set. I wonder why they would fly the numerical 0 or the Dissent signal prior to departure which was what it meant between 1799 and 1803, subsequently changing to numerical 2 in 1803 (until 1810)? Blue pierced with a white square doesn't seem to have become an alphabetical flag (and then as letter 'V' ) in RN codes until well on in the 19th century in the RN code books. But it had become letter P in commercial codes in 1855, basically as a result of the 1854 Merchant Shipping Act requiring that a standard code of flags should be established.

Popular Post Florence Locomotive Works
Evening all, Well the humidity blew away quite early, as did the clouds. The surprise lilies have arrived in the garden. Unfortunately for birds, are house has many large glass windows. These have an almost magnetic pull for Robins, often a fatal one. This was the case today, and it was the most well fed robin I’ve ever seen. So I went and undertook my duties, as I seem to be the only person able to burry birds. Alas the globe valve didn’t arrive today. On a brighter note, progress might start happening after a two year lull on my dad and I‘s garage layout, depicting somewhere on the Llyn peninsula, which I shan’t name for fear o’ the Awl. It it green though, my apologies. Breakfast was had for dinner, which consisted of pancakes, eggs, and bacon (this is an American custom, I don’t know about such things happening across the pond). Said meal was most enjoyable, and will be repeated for breakfast tomorrow. Hopefully. Douglas 19

The 1777 reference is from Wictionary and references the Dutch East India Company earlier using an all blue flag to recall everyone to the ship prior to departure. From our perspective looking back, the signal codes changed a lot. Sir Home Riggs Popham developed his code, published it in 1799, tested it at Copenhagen. It was adopted by the Navy in 1803 and in effect at Trafalgar. Popham was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1814. Interestingly, there are not a lot of online references for the specific details of the code (other than references to Nelson's message to the fleet at Trafalgar) and they are not consistent. This one is very good. It has an affirmative flag and specifically notes that where a message is not understood, the affirmative is flown with number 8 (a white flag). This reference contains some differences. As to the signal codes used prior to 1803, I don't know. Edited June 27, 2020 by Ozexpatriate 5

RMweb Premium Popular Post J. S. Bach Posted June 27, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 27, 2020 After some work with the weedeater and hedge trimmer, my arms are quite shaky; I have not done those things in a long time. I will say that those 20v battery operated tools worked quite well; no lugging of cumbersome power cords! Anyway, off to rest weary arms and other bits.
