RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2020 (edited) Morning all from Estuary-Land. Opened up Farcebook this morning to find 182 applicants to the local history group! Thats why I'm here a bit late. I usually check the groups that the applicants belong to as this often indicates that they are local and one had several shared groups with myself but none of them local, mostly railway groups (he was local anyway). It took well over an hour to induct them all into the group which is now approach 3500 members. The Milliput that I ordered has arrived so a bit of modelling may commence, though not involving parallel strips of metal. A couple of dioramas for displaying some car and lorry models. The airline industry has been in decline since 9/ll. Not only did that event discourage many from flying but people realised that by the clear skies when there were few aircraft flying how polluting air travel was. Here's a reminder though, of crawling around in the crankcase of the main engine. Non-marine engineers need to add roasting heat, hot oil rain and extreme discomfort to really enjoy the photo.... My dear sir, regardless of the number of rings carried on my sleeves or shoulders, I always felt that instructing those with less experience than me in what to look for or do was in both party's best interest - something I learnt from a couple of very experienced and forward-thinking senior engineers when I was the proud possessor of one ring, and even earlier! The oval openings in pressure vessels had dimensions of 450mm wide x 300mm high - you certainy needed to be slim and agile to get in and out and I simply couldn't do that today. The tightness of such apartures did have consequences for a C/E on one ship with dodgy boiler tubes where he was in the water drum, checking for marbles being rolled down prior to fitting plugs when the 2/E in the steam drum "let one rip". The poor 5/E who was assisting in the steam drum consequently felt the urge to get rid of his breakfast so headed to the manhole and promptly dropped the contents of his stomach over the C/E who was leaving the water drum below as he too couldn't take the stench created by the 2/E. As I was looking after the rest of the plant from a safe distance, I found it difficult not to laugh but I did have to get the mess cleaned up afterwards! 8 1 9

RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2020 The Highs and Lows of Railway Muddling - a short story by Bobbo Fatfingers. It was a sunny day in The Land of Sutt but there was a blustery, chilly wind which should have forewarned me that there could be trouble ahead. I was feeling quite positive about things as I headed to The Shed to put right a couple of mishaps from the other day. The first task was to investigate a fried decoder. I managed to open up the tender without damaging myself or anything else and as I suspected the the insulation sleeve around the chip was blackened and partially melted. I removed the offending article and inserted a blanking plug, reconnected the tender and tried it out on analogue ( had to change controllers over to do this) After several laps around the track everything was OK so I decided to use the decoder from another loco which is a very poor runner. That also went well and after putting it all back together the loco was running beautifully. I should have quit while I was ahead but this encouraged me to then have a look at the loco that was derailing. After checking the back to back of the pony truck and altering it the problem was solved. Ran it round at full tilt for several laps and all was well. "Yippee" said I and picked up the loco to put it back on the shelf..... .....and then I dropped it! Tune in next week for the next gripping instalment entitled "Superglue and me getting attached." 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2020 Worryingly both parcels seem not to have moved since yesterday at 14:11 German time , but they may be waiting for a regular load to head this way. The trip to the metropolis went well, the only things missing was flour and oat based biscuits. Felt very strange to be driving for the first time in 5 weeks. After then being taken on long patrol by Ben, it was back to bramble cutting, some self seeded damson trees were cut down. More clearance will continue tomorrow, Excuse me while i assess eyelids.
RMweb Premium Popular Post 45156 Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2020 Afternoon All Just a quick checkin today, with the usual generic greetings on offer to everybody - I have had to skip a few pages, as 30747 decided now that the door is fettled that the porch needed to be tidied - this in turn meant that as she's sick of one of the glass cupboards out there, it was decreed that it could be put up in the garage, where I put it up level, only to be told that it wasn't - and even using a spirit level to prove that it was up correctly, she was convinced that it wasn't - also she decided that we should get a new door knocker shaped like a big bumble bee - that came in the post yesterday afternoon, so had to be put up also. So after a walk round the block as well, I was left with about four pages, plus other threads, which will have to go the way of all good things. RMweb Gold Popular Post Shedman5 Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2020 Afternoon, sunny, blue sky with a fair breeze here, normally we do a Tesco shop for non food stuff about every 5/6 weeks so this morning off we set to Tesco. We only waited about 5 mins to get in which was good and then the fun began, having a one way system is all very well as long as people adhere to the system. Oh no various shoppers decided they could not be bothered and indeed some Tesco staff who were doing shopping for on line orders presumably thought that the system did not apply to them. As for the 2 metre rule that was a joke. We got about half way round and decided to go back to the first aisles and double up on our purchases and double up on the rest which means our next visit will be about July the 15th thank god! If Tesco had invoked the Waitrose only one shopper rule I am sure the visit would have been easier much more so for me as I would have not been there! Its was ouch! at the bill but the thought that thats it for ten weeks or so won the day. Garden jobs scheduled for tomorrow but a decoder needs ordering at some point, like Grandad Bob I have one of a fried variety! Enjoy your evening and take care

Gatwick is my preferred "go to" Airport (even though further away that Heathrow, Stanstead and Luton) - it's always a lot less trouble. Heathrow is just a bombsite. Stanstead is ok, Luton a sh*hole. However, the latter two usually mean going on one of the Easyjet or Ryanair buses - having to clean the seat of crisps/jelly/dirty nappies before I sit down isn't big in my book. Besides, I hate the tw*t who runs Ryanair with a vengeance and hate the idea of putting money in his pocket. He treats staff and customers with such contempt he deserves everything that's coming to him. yes very much agree with much of your comments especially re Luton and Rynair. We have been avoiding Heathrow a lot in recent years with Norwegian and West Jet flights across the pond. Its been announce that Virgin will no longer fly out of Gatwick and over 3000 jobs going so next doors daughter may not have a job to go back to once furlough has ended. Another friend other half works in catering in Crawley. Must ask how they are doing. They should have been on the maiden voyage of the new cruise ship out of Southampton around now. Visited Mums this morning then had to go get her frozen chips from the local co-op, got back then she said that she had forgotten about her prescription and was out of tablets so another visit back into the village. so two essential trips in one day!! back at Mums put the battery pack on her car to start it then moved it under the car port and plugged in the trickle charger so hopefully it will start OK next week when I drop the food off. brother wants to get his two kids back to HK when they are allowed to fly back as he says they don't like Mums cooking and mum cant eat spicy food that they do like. She will miss the company when they do go back. I wonder if they will return again for their courses. HK hasn't suffered anywhere near as much as the UK, the downside is that brother has said the rioting is kicking off again. He's also sold his Tesla and now wants to buy a boat and base it in Phuket as soon as Thailand will soon be reopening. Trains running again in the garden. maybe tomorrow I will lift the track and carry on with the patio extension. Its beer o'clock and currently drinking Skye brewery Red 27

I guess they have been self isolating together ( I hope for their and families sake). Talking of which the draft proposal for returning to work to only be 1m apart in the work place seems odd if outside work we have to be 2M apart. Double standards me thinks. my other half is hopeful to not be returning to the office anytime soon due to the 800 + people all queuing for the lifts for all multiple floors in the building. It had queues in the 'old days'.

Even Germans and Austrians have problems understanding an Inner-Schweizer in full flow (even my wife, a Basler born and bred, has difficulty understanding the Swiss German from the inner Swiss Cantons). In fact Swiss TV “Krimis” sold to German TV are sometimes subtitled. I was flipping through TV channels in a hotel in France trying to find something I could understand when I found a Swedish program. I thought it was a bit odd that they would be broadcasting it in Vienne. Eventually I realised they were actually speaking German and it was a Swiss TV station. 3

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted May 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2020 Afternoon all, Living room (my stuff) has been tidied made to look tidier in accordance with managerial request command. The vacuum has been cleaned and the lawn and (very) 'rough pasture' has been mown taking great care to avoid wild flowers in the case of the latter. The management have got the bunting up ready for Friday and there is talk of a socially distanced street party as well. Two Three commercial aircraft have passed not far off directly overhead this afternoon in the process of getting lined up to land at LHR - both all three were suitably sworn at although I doubt their respective drivers could hear me. Talking of aeroplanes as RH has said Virgin Atlantic has announced it's pulling out of Gatwick and 'shedding' 3,000 jobs - I feel sorry for the poor s*ds who will lose their jobs but, as ever - and definitely pushed along by the virus - things change and aviation is definitely going to shrink but hopefully we'll be safe from the 3rd runway at LHR. The latter is not my favourite airport and T5 is particularly dreary, Gatwick was quite convenient for trips starting from the office in the days when I worked at Waterloo although LHR is in some respects more convenient from home. I suffered Stansted on one occasion only, for my sole trip with O'Leary Air, and that was quite enough for me apart from it being awkward to get to from our side of London. Of Luton the less said the better and it definitely wasn't any sort of paradise. The weather still sits fair and this evening it will again be imported (from Scorrier) pasties for dinner as Mrs Stationmaster is being given an easy ride on teh catering front in honour of her completing another circuit around the sun. Enjoy the rest of your day one and stay safe 24
