AndyID
The filament has suddenly stopped advancing on my 3D printer. Either it's been hacked by one of the neighbors or a transistor decided to go ftang Not unlike some of the early computers I worked on. The worst thing you could do to them was turn them off. You could almost guarantee something wouldn't work when you turned them back on. It was never clear whether it was the off or the on that was responsible for the enknackerment.

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 Mooring awl, inner Temple Hare, 5 hours snooze so far more to come I hope. I'd like to get proper internet to the railway shed and mobile home, problems are: It's over 100yards away . Round a corner of the back garden, with trees along the boundary. The internet router is at the front of the house with solid brick walls throughout. The house and mobile home are on different phases of electricity. As it is, if I wander down the garden with this gadget, in line with the hall way, I get halfway to the corner before the signal fails. If I used power line adaptors in a window I suspect it would reach to the corner and I'd need a repeater from there. If I used cable or fibre after the problems of getting through the house, with door ways both sides of the hallway and mouldings on the ceiling making it difficult to hide a cable. There is a concrete pathway to cross. Then there would be the long dig to the MhRC. My current favourite solution would be a power line adaptor to the back of the house or possibly the garage, which is part way and off set giving a partial angle to the corner. Then a receiving aerial and repeater for the shed and MrCH. And with those thoughts time for zzzzzzzz
Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all Keen as I am to rid my jungle of the nettles which infest it, I draw the line at doing it in the rain so the job did not get done yesterday. Priority today must be given to the fodder run and the garnering of essential supplies so that is how it will be. Butter, cheese, grapes, bananas, milk and the increasingly fictional Radio Times are just the start. I am still not used to menu planning, good discipline though it undoubtedly is. There is plenty of scope for acting on whim and inspiration but Sunday roasts and the trimmings have much to commend them. My only hard and fast rule is that I will not eat fish on a Friday. Why should I? During the one minute silence yesterday the presenter on the BBC news channel was far from silent. Some mistake, surely? During the live coverage of the various places where men and women stood with heads bowed, a caption at the bottom of the screen could have reminded anyone who had forgotten that the silence was taking place and that speech of any sort was inappropriate. I wonder how many complaints there will be and what will happen as a result? Tonight I should have been at a HMRS meeting in Bletchley. Instead, the Society is dipping its toe in the Zoom pool and branch members will discuss whatever falls to be discussed. I have a little secret to share here. At half time in a normal meeting there is tea and biscuits. That is the only time during the month when I eat biscuits. It will be good for me not to eat biscuits, which I more or less gave up when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but I do like them. Mmmmm, chocolate digestives. Best wishes to all Chris 20
Popular Post AndyID
It seems the printer didn't stop due to a whacked transistor. Kindly excuse the techno-babble but those of us in the trade refer to the problem as a "bunged-up nozzle". Exactly why the nozzle decided to become enbunged at that precise moment is likely to remain a mystery. I had been thinking about swapping to a slightly smaller nozzle anyway (0.3 mm diameter) so I did that and the results seem to be quite pleasing. It's basically a trade-off between detail resolution and print time although strength factors into it as well, but 0.3 mm looks like a reasonable compromise. Today MrsID decided some bedding plants to decorate the deck were essential and as we had to pick-up some prescriptions at the pharmacy drive-through we took a jaunt into town in IDSPIDY sans top. The weather was perfect. Later, when we were sitting on our deck an Austin Metropolitan drove past. It might be owned by someone who just moved into our community. I might be able to give them a few pointers regarding BMC motors. Marmalade has been made. Most US marmalade is orange colored jelly with a few bits of orange peel to make you think it's actually marmalade. We made some industrial strength stuff by buying Ma-Made (Robertsons) cans containing actual Seville oranges and cooking it up in the jam maker. It's pretty inexpensive and jolly good too. 21

RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 Ey up! Cold and damp here this morning. Pah! I notice Debs was mentioned elsewhere on ERs yesterday. Someone was praising her supply of gauges to keep bits of nickel silver at the right distance apart and to keep them parallel. And what, i may ask, has Wednesday got in store for all ERs? On my slop chit I have so e household chores, a bit of furniture moving, some tidying and..when that is done, abit of muddling. I do have some work to do but that can only happen later this week when civil engineering activities are completed around my work room. Lets all go and sort Wednesday out! Ozexpatriate
I have a precise use of language question for the ER grammarians. In the following hypothetical situation: Car A is a performance vehicle with a top speed of 300mph. Car B is a high efficiency commuter vehicle with a top speed of 60mph. Statement 1. The top speed of Car A is five times (5X) the top speed of Car B. Restated: Statement 2. Car A is five times as fast as Car B. I have seen people try to state this as: Statement 3. RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 (edited) Morning Latest news - 'I have decided not to wear a face mask so I can look people in the eye' - I think someone might have the wrong idea how they are worn. The garden had a good soaking yesterday and so did I to a point for being out there in the rain. Today the sun has briefly broken through the cloud but more ran due so it may well be a shed day today. I also think that its going to be another strong beer day as I mood was lifted yesterday after such but my mood isn't feeling so great at the moment with the news that BA are going to shed thousands of jobs plus all those affected on top of that in their suppliers etc. and this is just the start of airlines contracting. It will affect us in this area as many jobs expected to go around Gatwick airport / Crawley area. Patio extension is now delayed till the rainy weather passes but at least the path next to the sheds and log pile is now looking much tidier ready for more paving. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 (edited) Good morning all, After yesterday's continual downpours the sun is shining at the moment but more rain is forecast. BA news not good for anyone in the travel industry like Steve and Abbie who are already under threat of redundancy. Steve is still WFH and Abbie was furloughed but on Monday was called back to WFH. It seems they possibly furloughed too many people and have now got some extra work from the government. She is now doing shift work for 6 days a week including Sundays and has told her boss she'll do whatever is needed. Sensible girl as that may possibly stand her in good stead when choices have to be made. Bloody Reynard came back and finished what he started so there are food scraps all along the alley which I'll shortly have to clear up. I have got a couple of ideas to thwart the little so and so though. Didn't get to The Shed yesterday as other things got in the way. No walk either because of the rain and I may not be going for one today. There's a couple of parcels due including prescription drugs which need to be received in person. Better go and sort out the mess outside, Have a good one, Bob. Edited April 29, 2020 by grandadbob 3
RMweb Premium Popular Post Dave Hunt Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 This is a postcard on which is my response to Ozex's question: Although generally used as having the same meaning, I think that B and C are different linguistically. B means that the top speed of the faster car is five times that of the slower car, I.e., 300 mph in the example. C means that the difference between the slower car's top speed and that of the faster car is five times the former, which is 300 mph over the slower car's top speed of 60 mph, giving a total of 360 mph. Since I don't have an American stamp for the self-addressed reply envelope I am enclosing a carrier pigeon; please feed before returning. Dull and grey this morning and the weather isn't much better. After muggocoffee, which I am forced to prepare for myself since SWMBO appears to be on strike and is still in the land of Nod, according to last night's issue of routine orders we are going to spend the morning preparing various meals for the freezer. This is due to a recent delivery of comestibles that need using before their best by dates but were ordered when delivery slots were available rather than when actually needed. Logistics get somewhat complicated in the current situation. Speaking of logistics, I have nothing but praise for the traders that we Railway modellers are dependant upon to enable us to continue our activities and stay sane. In addition to the Fraggle Rock guys (or is it more like Alcatraz these days Neil?) several other suppliers have all given excellent service recently and I'd just like to say thank you - in my opinion key workers. As Bugs Bunny would have it, that's all folks. Grab your Wednesday and stay safe. Dave 22 1

We've made contact with SWMBOs friend again so another red cross parcel from Tescos should arrive today. Bread milk butter and mushrooms.. Normal weather having resumed I'm about to head to the garage for lead cutting, with underside of the roof inspection for drips first to see if I've missed anything. It's sad the celebrations for VE remembrance are disrupted, it's important to remember. By this time Granddad had been released from being a POW, but one of his sons was still fighting in Burma.. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2020 Good moaning from a temporarily dry Charente Maritime. However that is due to changevin the next couple of hours. Beth has been out for a 5km bike ride and enjoyed it. I actually had a lie in but am now girding my loins for a morning of DIY or should I say bricolage. This afternoon I hope to either spend in the shed or doing some more negative scanning. I've almost finished 1974, 15 films. That was the year I bought my first SLR, a Yashica TLElectro with an extra zoom lens. Here the parliament is discussing how to end the lockdown. I saw the Dr yesterday and she told me that our area is virus free and they want to keep it that way. The big potential problem is second homers arriving from badly hit areas and she was very vehement that the Parisians should be kept in Paris. Our small village has about 10 holiday homes of which 4 are gites that wouldvsee multiple occupants over the summer, Most of the others belong to expats. It will be interesting to see what strategy emerges. As to internet to sheds. It's a difficult route from the house to the shed. 40 yards at least. The first half is garden with trees and paving in the way. The second is hard standing in very rocky ground. A buried cable would be difficult. I might experiment with a wireless extender. One has worked very well to the other endvof the house so I might give it a try. Stay safe out there. Jamie 17

Apart from the metallic aftertaste left by many (most?) artificial sweeteners, data suggest that artificial sweeteners may be as bad for you as too much sugar. Ultimately, I reckon, the solution to the biscuit craving is to only have a minimum number - consistent with one’s daily carbohydrate allowance OR make your own biscuits - thus controlling the amount of sugar going in, or even substituting honey for sugar in the recipe. 2 hours ago, Ozexpatriate said: I have a precise use of language question for the ER grammarians. However I would argue that neither Statement 2 or Statement 3 truly reflect Statement 1. If I would say “A Lamborghini travelling at 30 mph is 5 times as fast/faster than a Reliant Robin travelling at 6mph” then that statement is both true (and is reflected in your Statement 2 and Statement 3) and also false (compared to your Statement 1) as only the ratio is present in the statement made with no reference to top speed. I think that the qualifier (Top Speed) is the key here, without it you could argue S2 and S3 do not = S1 However, grammatically, I think that “five times as fast” is probably the correct ‘formal’ usage, whereas “five times faster” is, I think, the more widely used and understood version. Personally, I would use “faster than” because to me, it implies a consistent across-the-board ratio difference, whereas, again to just to me, “as fast as” implies a single time point/comparison. RMweb Gold Kingzance Posted April 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 29, 2020 Good morning, Decidedly dull and damp here again although not presently precipitating. It would appear that my package of coloured electrical string has been lost by Royal Mail as it was despatched 1st Class eight days ago and still has not reached my place, only some 40 miles south of where it was despatched! Unfortunately Spiratronics, a company that I have used for the best part of a decade and have recommended to numerous people, are unable to respond to my enquiries. I shall give them to the end of the week but next week I will have to advise Paypal that I need a refund. The lack of these wires will result in either a) the Up and Down Mains remaining closed or b) a less than perfect bodge wherein wires of identical colours are used in two different circuits, the latter being the more likely outcome. Whilst hugely sympathetic to anyone whose job disappears as a result of WuFlu, the massive growth in air transport seen over the past two decades was always going to be curtailed soon. Cheap air travel is something now of the past. This was just as likely as the Greta Effect impacted the thoughts of politicians, and more so voters who are from closer to her age group becoming enfranchised. The EU was also leading the push towards carbon emissions trading which the airline industry had managed to evade but plans are afoot to ensure the pollution generated by the air traffic industry will be equally taxed, air transport accounting for a significant amount of carbon emissions as the world actually moves towards a decarbonised energy profile in which the UK is actually leading! After all, the shipping industry has already faced up to this by addressing the fuel used in and the emissions from ships. Of course any cutbacks in air traffic will also impact a wider range of businesses, including some whose market have been built on exporting fresh produce - Scottish salmon being an example. Your thoughts on whether the UK taxpayer should be expected to pay taxes to give to Mr Branson’s empire, located as it is on one of the BVI tax havens or to help a Spanish company called IAG who own BA or even that extremely pleasant Mr O’Leary who calls “foul” if anyone gets something his Ryanair business doesn’t get whilst we remaining taxpayers here get to settle the bill for the significant amounts of money pumped in to save our economy over the past two months are welcome. I will be the first to admit that, with the exceptions of the Polar continents, I have been able through work or for pleasure to visit all the other continents and I am sure travel has widened my perspectives. This is however something that was available to the more affluent and isn’t a global option. Anyways, and after that depressing tirade, today will bring not a great variety of new places to go, people to see or things to do. KZ Towers remains generally in lockdown, even if SWMBO wants to go for a drive! One of the things that I miss most is the ability to browse and select fresh vegetables and fruit. Two online deliveries from the Rose of Waits has shown that their pickers tend to select the produce left by in store shoppers, I.e. the shortest expiry dated stuff is what we get. Although I wanted to support our local pub as it strive to keep its suppliers going by acting as a fruit and veg shop, the quality of what they made available was also not what I would have selected from browsing the shelves of any of the retailers, be that small specialists or supermarkets. And yes, before you say it, non-seasonal produce is only available due to the mass of airfreight that supports our airports and airlines. I still have a few kits of things to run on parallel bits of nickel silver that can occupy me but Her Ladyship has no hobbies and other interests, hence why she is prowling like a cat on a hot tin roof. My suggestions of “chill, chill” seem not to be heard. With that, I will bid you adieu until later. Be safe and careful and we’ll see light at the end of this rather long tunnel soon.
AndrewC
Good moaning all from the boring borough. Interwebby in the shed is behaving. I should say it is about 25m from router to router via the cable. I could have gone fibre but as the routers can only handle 1.3Gbit it was overkill and 5 times the cost. The second cable is used currently for the Sonos speaker. They are flaky & very sensitive and I've found that the SonosNet isn't as good as claimed. It really works best connected directly to the Sonos Boost. For the geeks out there, I'm running a 3 node AI mesh using Asus routers. By using an ethernet backhaul it means I'm getting a full 1.3Gbit between nodes. It also means my wifi in the shed is getting me the full 380Mbit speeds of my broadband provider. This is good for work and so I can also keep an offsite(ish) mirrored backup of the nas drives in the house. The shed has now been sufficiently cleared as well so that [edit](premature post happened. ) today's arrival of a replacement dartboard and removable raised oche means the Blue Shed public (err private club) house will be open this evening for beer, music, and darts. The old board warped after around 18 years. In other news it is a Wednesday that feels like a Monday that doesn't feel like any day at all. On that note, enjoy the day.
