Evening all(flexes knees and salutes) funny old day, sun came out and warmed the place up a bit, then an east wind picked up throwing a blanket of cold Harr all over the place, todays exercise was then deemed as a cycle ride inland where the sun still shone a bit. Bit of the "G" word took place, more carrot seeds sown as first sowing have sprouted, the general idea is to have stuff ripen in succession, doesn't work, they just catch up and we end up with a glut, at least I tried. A tin of Red Salmon was found at the back of the cupboard, well past it's sell by date, but very tasty for lunch, I'll be glad when the Tescos cavalry arrive

I've been checking the status of my stimulating check on the IRS website and it kept telling me it could not give me any information but today was different - it asked for my bank info - yippee!

 

Should just about cancel out the check I had to send them for 2019 tax

I was about to post an update on my brother from yesterday, saying that a plan for his discharge from hospital was being prepared.

 

Then earlier this evening my phone rang with his caller ID and I expected it to be my SiL.

 

But no - brother on the line - he's now home!

Good evening everyone 

 

Sheila is very pleased with the freshly painted towel rail and work has already started to the one that it has replaced. This one was purchased flat pack and so was easily disassembled into its component parts. The 5 rails and the 10 finials have all been rubbed down and are now ready to paint. Work has started on the 2 side frames, but they are still nowhere near ready yet, hopefully they will be so in the next day or so. 

 

After dinner I decided to spend the rest of afternoon in the workshop and so work continued on the turntable. I did say the other day that I’d take some photos of the modified axle mounting of the turntable. The kit when sold doesn’t include an axle, this has to be sourced separately. However, the bore of the central boss is 4mm and the axle is intended to be an interference fit. The axle and cross piece are brass and the cross piece has 2 functions, the first is it connects the track supply to one rail and also prevents the turntable from actually rotating on the axle, which could make the indexing system inaccurate. 

 

The photo below shows some of the parts for the track pick-up system.

Top left is the unmodified plunger, to its right is the modified one with a wire soldered to a hole I drilled in the side.

Below these is the axle, with cross piece (soldered in place) and connector fitted.

Bottom left is the modified slip-ring, this should be split into 2 halves, but I’ve soldered these together to form a single ring, the unmodified plunger will pick up current from this.

Next is the modified central axle boss, the large hole in the centre spigot is for the axle, this has had a slot cut into it for the cross piece.

The 2 outer spigots, each having a small hole, into which the plungers would drop through, only one of these will be used.

What can’t be seen is a hole in the side of one of the outside spigots for the wire that has been soldered onto the modified plunger. 

 

This photo shows the whole thing assembled ready to fit beneath the turntable, showing the single plunger, the axle fitted and connected to the modified plunger, this is fitted upside down and is just visible through the hole. 

 

Finally the whole turntable bridge (upside down in this photo) assembled, as can be seen, all the modifications are hidden from view by the bridge itself. 

 

As it is at the moment, the axle is far too long at the moment and will eventually be shortened, but as a final length has not yet been determined, I’m going to leave at it is for now, it being far easier to remove metal, than it is to put it back on! My next job will be to make a couple of brass bushes for the axle, one will act as the lower bearing for the drive mechanism, the second will act as a top bearing and as the electrical connection for the modified plunger. As it stands, the bridge now has uninterrupted supply to each rail, this is essential for sound fitted locos, however, the supply will of course need to through some sort of loop reversal unit, so as not to cause a short circuit.

There will not likely have been parades or large gatherings for a dawn service.

 

Apparently the Australian PM remarked:

We moved in 1959 to a suburb of Toronto called Thistletown (Police Village of) which was an old and honourable name honouring Dr. Thistle. Apparently the only Thistletown in the world. We actually moved to a new housing development.

Just south of the river was another new development called Rexdale. A few years later the Post Office decided to lump us in wit this upstart. My father didn't like it because of the melding of Latin and AngloSaxon. Possibly also because the Rex (developer) was then in jail.

Measure 4 times.

When I decided to drill the holes for the keel bolt through the keel moulding,  I measured the position of the first bolts on the keel and marked that up on the bottom of the keel... Then went down for the second and thought.... that's way out.. 

 

I'd forgotten to account for the slope of the bow.. 

Remeasured marked up again

Placed moulding on top keel and observed.. Not right by about 1/4 inch. 

 

Measured and marked up 3rd time. 

Placed moulding on keel looked OK.. 

 

Wandered off for a Muggacoffee.. 

Came back remeasured,  no change. 

 

Got drill out,  sacrificed a wood drill bit on the fibreglass,  as they have a point that doesn't wander. 

Five holes drilled,  

Placed moulding on keel and... 

It fitted... 

Perfectly... 

Relieved... 

 

Plans for today, find some scissors,  my hair is getting annoying.. 

 

Time for that snooze button..

The large West Riding of Yorkshire sign (dwarfing the politically {geographically} correct Lancashire one) always used to amuse me when I drove the B28 Burnley to Barnoldswick bus service during my stint of being a part time driver for the erstwhile company Border Buses

Greetings one and all

 

Every time I hear the latest pronouncement of the President of the United States I have to suspend disbelief.  I should really let his stupidity speak for itself but I like the gag I just found on Facebook:  Donald Trump has appointed Mr Muscle as his special adviser.  My sympathy goes out to all Americans except those who voted for him.  Here endeth the politics because I rather like being here.

 

I need a haircut.  My mop has become even more unwieldy than usual and should I be unwitting enough to glance in a mirror I see a discoloured haystack.  A posible solution presented itself about half an hour before I logged into RMweb.  The trusty BBC World Service proclaimed that some virus-related restrictions look set to be lifted in the second wave of liberation, allowing hair salons to reopen.  The snag is that the announcement refers to Belgium.  How much difficulty that presents regarding the little matter of getting there is an unknown quantity.  Would such a trip be regarded as an essential journey?  Discuss!

 

I'll stay this for that ruddy virus: it is prompting us to be ingenious.  An example of that is, of course, the virtual members' day tomorrow which is a brilliant idea.  Couldd the principle be applied to something which I am supposed to be doing at the end of next week?  As some know, I like to mark May Day by watching some morris dancing at Ampthill, having breakfast in the pub and meeting with friends who live locally to carry out quality control of real ales in local hostelries.  What are the obstacles this year?  No dancers and no pubs for starters!   Maybe, just maybe, we can use Zoom and each raise a glass to whatever it is we raise a glass to.  I'll run it by the others but don't hold your breath.

Cool not cold,  dull overcast,   

Ben took me out on morning Patrol,  a little late,  as he had been licking his front ankles.  We suspect old age is catching up and he's getting arthritis.. 

 

That didn't stop him chasing a vulpes vulpes.. A fox, the first time I've seen a live one on the garden.

The fox is probably attracted by the large number of rabbits we seem to have at the moment... 

 

Time I think for breakfast,  I fancy a BLT...
