Popular Post Simon G
Another day of mostly gardening and generally pottering around. The day was soured this morning when I was at the bottom of the drive chatting to a friend who was walking past down the lane. Then another guy arrived with his dog, which was not on a lead. The dog promptly jumped up first at my friend, at which point I politely suggested to the owner that it should be on a lead. Then it jumped at me, so my next request to him to put it on a lead was less polite. Rather than simply put the lead on, he was more inclined to argue that the mutt was doing no harm, and didn’t accept me pointing out that it is a legal requirement for it to be on the lead on a public road. It took a less than pleasant discussion before he finally managed it. At least when he returned half an hour later, the dog was on the lead. Hopefully that will continue. 2

(Some folks want to write a missive on their layout plans.........) And that didn't deal with the extra ones that arrived today. WFH tomorrow to catch up with the backlog - there maybe an early lunchbreak to the big Orange shed to pick up some DIY supplies to keep Mrs NB happy/out of my way occupied. They have been pre-ordered and the outing will be combined with a planned food trip to the adjacent ASDA In the meantime - this was tonight's sunset from the patio at NB Towers, but I was interrupted... RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted April 14, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 14, 2020 Good evening everyone The sun has been shining all day, but it was a lot colder than I was expecting it to be. The garden is starting to grow a bit, the blossom on the apple tree is starting to open, some of the peonies have buds, as do some of the roses and some of the bluebells are starting to open. On the down side, the camellias are coming to an end as are the daffodils. I’ve spent most of the day in the workshop, when I went down there first thing, I took a lot of stuff with me from the dining room table and packed it away. I then gave the turntable drive motor a thorough overhaul as when I removed the brush cover there was an awful lot of carbon dust in there, I also cleaned the gearbox and re-greased that too! This took a good hour or so to complete, but it now runs a little bit quieter than before. After dinner I literally threw together a makeshift plunger/roller mechanism from odd bits and pieces lying around the spares/offcuts box in the workshop. Once built, I tested it with a sliding bar which has a couple of notches in. It into it. To be honest, it is all a bit Heath Robinson but I wanted to see if I could get it to work, which it did. However, there was far too much play back and forth on the actual plunger as well as too much side play between the sides of the yoke and the roller to be able to use it on the turntable. But at least the build proved it would work, confining the theory, so the next stage is to make another one, but this time using better engineering practices. Switch in closed position. Switch in open position. I’ve used bits of Perspex as it’s quite easy to work and you can drill and tap it very easily. The long slope into and out of the dip make the transition from on to off easier. The actual amount of movement required to operate the switch is just over 1.5mm. However, that’ll be towards the end of the week as I will be doing some shopping trips and a few domestic tasks before then. Tonight’s tea was some soup from the freezer and the evening was rounded off spent sat on the sofa catching up with some recorded TV. Goodnight all 17

If you click on an online merchant and look at their wares, particularly one shown by Ads by Google, you will continue to get that ad a lot. Each page view is auctioned to the highest advertising bidder in the time it takes to load your page. Your demographics can factor. RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted April 15, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 15, 2020 Mooring awl inner Temple Hare, A good nights sleep so far of about 6.5 hours.. Google ads quite often shows me advertisements for something I've just bought and am unlikely to need again. I remember when NVQs came out some companies started offering them to employees as some sort of perk. It would of course require the employees, working in their own time and taking exams. Not surprisingly in the technical companies I worked for and with, it got very short shrift as most had degrees or a long series of technical qualifications. A total lack of understanding of their own employees qualifications and skills by HR and senior management. Hmm I've got the BBC news on, and the lady presenter who until now has had shoulder length hair, today has tied it back severely. I suspect she's not happy with being unable to go to the hairdressers.. I'm getting some slight pain from my hands and wrists. I'm guessing they are complaining at the change in their lifestyle. From typing and setting up electronic equipment all week to, muddling, keel making and garden work. I need to work out how to build an anttena and it's supporting framework. plasticard is the obvious material . This one, the one in a back ground, the publicity picture was taken early 1978, how do I know? I'm stood in the middle. Time for that snooze button. 18
Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all I’ve been thinking about money. It has been strange having nothing to spend it on apart from groceries and the lottery. When things are “normal” there are exhibitions, society meetings, concerts and festivals, meals out and the occasional pint. There are holidays and bits of holidays, there are hotels and there is petrol. Now there is lockdown and I can’t go anywhere except the supermarket. There are cancellations and postponements and there is uncertainty over when and whether deferred events will happen. Refunds have been coming at me from all angles, though I rather doubt that I will be able to reclaim the cost of the Dublin Pride afterparty. The good bit is that I will now have paid well in advance for a goodly number of events in 2021 because it is good common sense to carry bookings forward. My bank account is set up so that any cash above a predetermined sum on a given date is swept into a savings account. What’s not to like? On top of all that I received a modest remittance from Ernie yesterday! The next stage in the process will probably be to moan like crazy that three postponed events are all on the same weekend. There is a good chance of that as there are only four weekends in September, at present the first available month for postponed events. On the other hand we may all still be under house arrest in September, but I’m trying not to worry about that. I found the recipe for what I call basic risotto and it was very tasty - the risotto, that is, not the recipe. There is still some chicken left so unless I have a better idea I shall have to learn to love curry. Tonight we have the virtual Area Group meeting. It should have been our quarterly informal lunch in a real pub. Perhaps I could make chicken and pickle sandwiches and eat them while we are all Zooming? Best wishes to all Chris 18
iL Dottore
Morning All, A few random thoughts: Peter - I’ve read that loosing a dog can be more painful, and the loss felt for much longer and more keenly than loosing a family member. I can certainly understand that. TheQ - poor Ben really doesn’t look like a happy beastie, does he? When Lucy is not happy with me (frequently alas, I repeatedly seem to fail to live up to her expectations) she gives me what I can only call “The Dowager Duchess Look” (that disapproving, bad-smell-under-the-nose look perfected by Maggie Smith in Downtown Abbey). All: Maybe it’s me, but I thought that Downtown Abbey started well enough but after the first season progressively became more soap opera-ish. A fate that seems to affect many series nowadays (incidentally, re DA, I read a critique of the show bemoaning the lack of historical accuracy, inasmuch as in those days the aristocracy regarded servants as we would regard a cooker or washing machine - as tools for running the household [and who amongst us cares about the emotional wellbeing of our toaster] - make of that what you will). For me, one of the drawbacks of the lockdown is that with so much time on my hands there is no impetus to get any modelling/guitar playing/house maintenance done. Unfortunately, I find that without a deadline or - more relevantly for these days - limitations on available time, I tend to give in to the temptation to “do it tomorrow”. Finally, regarding “Folk Music”: perhaps because of the miscreants I hung around with during my misspent teenage years, I’ve always viewed this sort of music as populated by earnest hippies in tie-dyed clothing (Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary etc) or earnest bearded types in chunky hand knitted Arran sweaters (UK folkies - take your pick for an example). Having said that, I am a big fan of Steeleye Span. Maddy Prior (along with Annie Haslam of Renaissance) having one of the most amazing voices in (any sort of) popular music; better, I think, than Kate Bush (overrated? Discuss). Steeleye Span’s collaboration with the late Terry Pratchett, Wintersmith, was - I think - a very uneven effort. But where it all came together - sublime. Whilst both Maddy Prior and Annie Haslam are still singing, the YouTube videos I have seen of their recent performances show how much of their vocal range they have lost (understandably, given the effects of age) but they still manage to sing better than many of today’s - Aututune assisted - artistes.
