They launched into their spiel and I told them that I went to the local CoE church and was a server. This had no effect so I started to close the door and one of them made the bad mistake of putting their foot in the way. I opened the door, nicely asked them to move their foot otherwise I would slam the door. They just carried on with the spiel so the door was slammed and I think he got a badly bruised foot or worse but they got the message and have never called again! I had a couple at my door back in Cornwall in the 90s. I offered them a deal. I would listen to them for five minute if they then listened to me for five minutes. Deal struck. They went through their script while I listened and timed them out at the five-minute mark. It was now my turn. I opened with "I sell life insurance ....... " Which was true at the time. And no JW has ever knocked any door of mine since!!! 16 2
Popular Post tigerburnie
Nice day today, sun was out, but a cold wind with snow forecast later in the week, just when I thought spring was coming. We went for our walk round the fields, we passed some dog walkers, exchanged a hello with both sets of people moving away to maintain more than 2 metres. Bit more work in the greenhouse trying to get as head start with growing edibles in containers or in the border soil in the greenhouse. I help moderate a gardening forum, seems a lot of our posters are doing similar, a sort of dig for victory going on. Picked up some eggs from a free range chicken farmer, I don't think we will need to go to a supermarket for a few weeks. G'night all

Not unusual there or here. It has snowed many times on my birthday and that's still about four weeks from now. Snow in May is not out of the question either. US Memorial Day is the last Monday in May and one year we had so much snow that weekend that one of the ski hills opened for free skiing. The morning was OK but it was turning to slush by mid-day. 16

RMweb Gold Popular Post PeterBB Posted March 22, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 22, 2020 (edited) Hectic day - some essential homework carried out successfully. Not into food but already eating something different because of 'shortages' (we all know how they have been caused) by lack of available food items during our weekly shop. Like others spending more time on the RMweb ... SWMBO is making sure that I do not 'go out' as she has discovered that there are three counts that put me in 'at risk' groups and son when available had to pick up my 'click and collect' order from Scr-wfix - delivered at a distance. It is frustrating but necessary. Have you seen the pictures of the crowds outside Dudley Yesco? In terms of medications Baz waxed eloquently some time back on the various side-effects of a number of them that a lot of us are on and statins are potentially some of the worst. Having recorded a number of effects that were magnified in terms of other medication came off them. Cramps - yes - treat as current FA standard method but these and the 'tingling' extremities are side effects of medication. The alternative would cause more serious problems with another medical condition that has meant no added salt for the last 70 years and a bit. Popular Post andyram
Evening all and once again my hope that you are all staying safe and healthy. I have only just made it onto RMWeb today so I have not had chance to catch up on many posts. My apologies. The sun has been shining and much of the day has been spent in the garden catching up on various tasks. The lawn has had its first cut of the year, some of the bushes trimmed and the backlog of weeding begun. There was a brief walk over to the local supermarket this morning due to a need for cat food. It was busy, but not overbearing and the shelves seemed well stocked. Sadly, it appears the guidance from the government seems to have been well and truly ignored. I saw a lot of photographs of how busy Matlock Bath was today. It seems other National Parks and open spaces were equally busy and many have now made the decision to close. It is a decision I have sadly made too. I can no longer justify keeping the shop open to the public for the time being. I intend to head over there as normal this week, and work there so that I can handle any online or telephone orders but the door will be locked. Since the large percentage of my takings are from over the counter sales, I am very concerned about how things will progress. I can only hope and pray that the upturn in sales from non face to face avenues will continue. I have started a video diary on Youtube of the experiences. The link to yesterday is included below: Stay safe Andy 1

Don’t see any JW for ages and then get a few different teams. Some of them have better techniques than others. We haven’t had LDS or Seventh Day Adventists for many a year. I don’t mind them calling, until Aditi retired on many days I only spoke to the dog while she was at work. I expect we should be getting less bogus internet problem calls from India. Even legitimate call centres are having staff problems due to virus restrictions. We have a brief outing tomorrow to collect medication and then no real need to go out except for a walk locally. It is never very crowded here. Tony 15 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted March 22, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 22, 2020 Good evening everyone A very quiet Mother’s Day here at BSW towers. Not a great deal has happened other than several phone calls form the offspring who wanted to talk to Sheila. This evening I spent an hour or so on the phone to my brother in Canada, the main conversation tonight was the coronavirus and it would seem that the effects there are very similar to what we’re experiencing here in the UK. Not a lot else of note happened here, so I’ll bid you all a goodnight. 21

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2020 Evening all from Estuary-Land. I hope the face masks I ordered arrive soon, preferably tomorrow morning. Apparently the Royal Mail are still delivering but they will leave any parcels on the front step, knock and retreat. I'm also hoping that the ultra-violet torch arrives soon, it will be effective on most surfaces as long as theres nothing to stop the light reaching said surface. 16
Popular Post pH
At various places around the town, there are small 'free libraries'. These are book exchanges - just little boxes with a glass door in front, on posts. Mostly novels of the kind you read once, and never again - you often return them to the same place once you've read them. We've walked past the same one three times in the last ten days or so. The first time, my wife picked out three books. The next time, the box was empty, with a note saying it would be kept empty of books for the duration of the 'social distancing' restrictions. However, walking past today, we saw there was something in it, and a different note. The note said 'Please take anything you need from here', and the box contained 3 tins of vegetables, 6 packets of pot noodles and 2 toilet rolls! 20
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2020 No G today. Just TU. The current situation has made the NB household put the effort [*] into tidying up the conservatory for use as a WFH workspace. It has long been used as a convenient store/junk overflow for many years. A quick refresh of the paintwork is also on the agenda - possibly Monday afternoon. There will also be a replacement of the silicone around the window frames as I panic bought two tubes at the local Screwfix earlier. [*] As a result of today's episode/saga, it won't be long before I go for "B" Stay safe folks. Cheers, Mick

Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all For a few minutes yesterday I lost it. I was part way through composing an e-mail to friends in Sidmouth and the combination of losing my Dublin trip and the prospect of spending even more time home alone than usual got to me. The gloomy missive which Jon and Ali received was not the typical Chris that they know and, I hope, love. They are very understanding people, thank goodness. After cooking and munching a steak I felt much better and even found some therapeutic relief in a spot of m*d*ll*ng. Today I need to venture outside to take a prescription request to the surgery, to buy my lottery ticket, aka donation to charity, and to brave the marauding hordes in as many supermarkets as it takes to get what I need. I may be some time. Thank goodness that bus passes are now valid all day. My apologies to JohnDMJ for a belated response to his query about The Archers. I think he refers to the facility at Berrow Farm which rears cows intensively and presumably milks them in a like manner. It was created by Justin Elliott and managed, after a fashion, by Neil Carter and his deputy Hannah between whom no love is lost. Polybear, Kingzance and Andrew C, you are not alone in suffering from cramp. How about both thighs at 3 am? I have taken to keeping a tube of Deep Heat in my bedside cabinet. Kneading the errant muscles with fingers coated in the pink ointment brings relief eventually. A long time ago I consulted my GP after another night of agony. She recommended quinine, found in tonic water. Thanks, Doc. Best wishes to all. We need them. Chris 1

We had contact with all three kids yesterday including at one point a 3 way video call with, Martin, Katie and Ryan, plus Rachel Laura and young Emily. Today is another G day with hedge trimming as the main task. Other shrubs and things will be lopped if time and energy permit. Hopefully there may be a bit of muddling later. Regards to all. Time will tell if restricting myself to online, telephone, Skype sales will have result in a significant enough rise in these areas. There are so many established online retailers around who people understandably turn to first. Stay safe Andy
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Hare, 986/616 A reasonably solid 5.5 hours sleep was followed by not much dozing, too many aches and pains from the weekends work in or on the garage. Frost only on the most prone parts of the garden not on the cars.. The great Fried was up and shining as I took Ben the happy Collie out.. Why is Ben Happy... SWMBO is now home all the time, and there's sunshine when he wants to go out in the morning.. Many phlattend Feasants on the way in as they are too busy phighting other feasants to pay attention to a phourty ton truck bearing down on them.. The major system I left running on Phriday needs a bit of a rerun as someone took it off before it was phinshed. Question.. If wearing face masks has no effect why are medics clamouring for them and the NHS has ordered 1 million + extra masks... PS i have a face mask with plenty of spare filters, but it's heavy duty rubber industrial quality. I will be wearing that if I need to.. Plans for to day, finish the major system, it's running the missing bits now.. I have 23 measurements of 1 G ohm to do... 5
RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted March 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 All the best for online trading Andy. My spending on modelling items has been severely reduced since packing up work in 2018 but I still do buy items so will keep you in mind if I do require anything. This morning will be a trip to Mums but luckily I do not have put the handrail up after speaking with my brother and then one of his kids so long as he slows down using the stairs as hospitals are busy enough without someone braking a limb. SO I will keep out of Mums house as much as I can when delivering supplies form the garden centre for my nephews to keep them occupied. Enroute there is a farm shop and brewery so as long as its quieter than it was at the weekend I will go in and see if they have any eggs, bread and stock up with Godstone brewery bottles. After mums I have weathered locos to drop off at a friends for him and another. We will do that at his front door to keep the required distance. From there I will head to another brewery for take out draft ale before heading home. If I can get enough food supplies then we will avoid going t the local Supermarkets. Hoping to have my last Big Mac meal form a drive Thru golden arches for the last time till when ever they reopen after they all close by 7pm tonight. Modelling will resume once back home 22
