RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted March 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 12, 2020 We used to have a slight damp problem but it was only when there was rain accompanying wind from the west. It was rain coming through the soffit vents and disobeying gravity being wind driven into the loft. When the wooden soffits were replaced with upvc with top vents the damp disappeared. Popular Post Sir TophamHatt
I mean... where did all that wind from last night come from?! Have given up on cleaning up for this week and will continue to deflect jobs until next week - the ultimate in procrastination! However, we're now on to Season 3 of Downton Abbey. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. I'm also a bit concerned (?) by admitting that! 19

Popular Post The Lurker
Greetings all from LBG where it is blue skies at the moment and fairly empty. I have heard rumours that someone on our Madrid office went down with the virus at the end of Feb. They haven't shut the office or anything. I had wondered why the work produced by his team was even worse than usual.....! Some people have reported emptier trains. Not a chance on my line, still standing room only. My parents have had a recurring problem with the rain blowing in under the soffits when the wind is in a certain direction. When you are in a house for 55 years, I guess problems do recur, even when you take remedial action. In law are due to go on (yet another) cruise after Easter. I suspect the MiL, who hates cruises and gets terribly seasick, is secretly hoping it is cancelled although FiL keeps saying it will be the last one due to the rising cost of insurance (his cancer, her heart attack). 2

The high tide was interesting, as I had expected! Our usual footbridge over a small Beck was almost underwater and the rock sea wall had waves coming over it. I have attached a couple of photos of it. The heavy machinery is ironically there to strengthen the rock wall, in order to protect the railway. Just as we left, a Porsche drove down the lane and parked next to the blue car in the photo. I hope that the driver has good anti-corrosion protection as it will have had quite a salty treatment down there!

Popular Post Ian Abel
Morning all. BIN day. BIN there. done that <groan> Well, off to the doc first thing for the check-up/prescription renewal mandatory visit. All OK far as they can tell, although that doesn't include results of blood and pish samples provided - will hear later. One alarming item, seems I've GAINED weight since I was last in, everyone around me says I've noticeably lost weight since I've been exercising, mentioned to quack and apparently fat weights less than muscle so it's entirely likely to lose inches but gain weight! Who knew, certainly not me Chrisf, while I share your concerns about being cooped up in an aluminium tube for hours, according to Jemma (who I do trust with real facts rather than hearsay) the modern aircraft circulate fresh air several orders of magnitude faster than most all offices/large spaces, including airport lobbys, cinema-plexes and supermarkets to name a couple that are regularly inhabited. She says she'd rather be in the aircraft than a supermarket!! Went to our local supermarket last evening, needed some milk and urgent supply of tonic water for the G&Ts! Amazingly, whilst it wasn't FULL, the bog roll aisle actually had some availability. Possibly all those who are panic buying a million rolls have now filled their storage spaces to capacity so everyone else can simply buy what they think they need for a couple of weeks... Tonight is happy hour and choir rehearsal, since the choir is 60+ folks on average, almost ALL of whom are in the target/susceptible age group - I'd guess 90% of us are at least 65 - it'll be interesting to see how many show up and also if there is any discussion of curtailing the rehearsals. Given we're gearing up for the Palm Sunday/Easter services and those services usually draw 900+ people, it may be that those are restricted?? 4 and cloudy when I went to the quack, expected to manage 7 for a high with possibility of showers later. Stay safe, be prepared but don't panic buy, think of "everyone" in need.

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted March 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 12, 2020 afternoon all. Well it seems that Boris is determined (has determined?) that we should carry on normally for the time being and schools etc will not be shut down - which has the advantage that the little dears won't be out in the road making a racket but the disadvantage that certain morning and afternoon parking jams will still be taking place. in fact shutting the private infants/junior school round the corner from us would deliver significant advantages in road safety due to far fewer parked vehicles and child collecting idiot drivers filling up the roads - yes, some clouds really do have silver linings the las has apparently been told that he can work from home - which is rather clever of his company because i reckon he puts in a longer day when he's here than he does at the office! The car is still at the ransom centre garage undergoing whatever money extracting ideas they can think of - an afternoon demand for money was promised. After I dropped it off at 08.00 I strolled round to Tesco to get the 'papers - no queues and nothing worth queueing for in any case so I touched nothing else and left for the uphill climb homewards. I took a rare walk down via the top of our road on the way home to duly note that an increasing number of households have copied my idea of having the house number engraved in a piece of stone (slate to be precise) and fixed to a brick gate pier. But only one is anywhere near as tasteful as ours because although it has recessed white coloured numerals (ours are gold) it is the only other one apart from ours which uses hidden fixings so no screw or bolt heads show and it isn't a cheapo knockout from a garden centre - ours was made to order by the local monumental mason. I do have some IPA (not the India version) in stock but none of the other ingredients for home brewed hand sanitiser, presumably hydrogen peroxide and glycerol could be obtained from a good pharmacy although I'm not sure where one could get an alcoholmeter which you apparently need to make sure you've got the mixture right. Could be fun mixing some though. Enjoy the rest of your day one and all 22
RMweb Gold 81C Posted March 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 12, 2020 Afternoon All I see GDB is on about his bowel actions again good does of salts will put that right. RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted March 12, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) Good Dafter Noon all. The Hill of Strawberries has turned from cold and sunny to cold, grey and with intermittent violent showers. As it is Thor's Day I am awaiting his arrival presaged by deafening cloud-farts. There is no sign of Corona Virus here but just to be sure I am consuming a bottle every night to maintain my immunity. It also helps me with the writing; deadline for the magazine is tomorrow and I am very likely to achieve it. Just another 500 words ..... SWMBO said that years ago then discovered that it took a lot more than "just another 500 words" to write a PhD thesis. I am, among other things, checking her final draft for good English, consistent grammar, correct tense and for spelling because we know what computers are - they can't tell the difference between to, too and two nor between annex and annexe. Final submission is Friday next week after which we plan to mark the event by what ever means Boris the Mophead still allows. It's 16.35. That means I am overdue for a muggertee and a choccy bar. All the best, dear friends. I'll be back. Edited March 12, 2020 by Gwiwer

I had a set of neighbours who had their telly on loud enough to annoy both me and the neighbours on the far side (we lived in a terrace). Simple solution, took my speakers off the other wall then put them face touching the party wall. Led Zeppelin 1 was then put on at full blast for 10 minutes. I never had any more trouble with their noisy telly. They did however manage to block the sewer up with condoms, knotted at the top after use but that's another story. RMweb Gold Shedman5 Posted March 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) He obviously disregards the following lol! Not for Covid 19 but good for saw throatsAntibacterial activity of red and white wine against oral streptococci. Daglia M1, Papetti A, Grisoli P, Aceti C, Dacarro C, Gazzani G. Author information Abstract Wine contains a number of biologically active compounds with beneficial effects on human health. The antibacterial action of commercial red and white wines against oral streptococci responsible for caries development and against S. pyogenes responsible for pharyngitis was studied. Its postcontact effect against S. mutans was also studied. Both wines displayed activity. The compounds responsible for such activities were succinic, malic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and acetic acid. The synthetic mixtures of the organic acids tested at the concentrations found in wine had greater antibacterial activity than the beverages, indicating that in wine they are inhibited by other components. Wine polyphenols displayed no activity against oral streptococci or S. pyogenes. Findings show that wine is active against oral streptococci and S. pyogenes and suggest that it enhances oral health.
