Evening all from Estuary-Land. I restocked with bog rolls last Sunday before the panic began. I tend to buy as many packs as I can fit into the cupboard because it saves extra journeys just to purchase them. Just placed an order online for more tea as I'm running a bit low. I also ordered a couple of diecast models from Hong Kong, its cheaper to buy them in ones and twos to keep them below the threshold for customs duty. Thats it for now, be back later.

Good evening everyone 

 

Some more work has been done moving stuff into the office area from the large cellar room. Whilst tidying up I came across the stash of offcuts of wood that I used whilst making the desk and shelving. Although most of the pieces were on the small side, they did fall into the ‘being too big to just throw away’ area. So I’ve used the vast majority of them to make a step which will enable me to gain access to the under floor storage area. I had initially designed a folding step that would fold up into the shelving, but it took up too much of the valuable storage space. Additionally, the slope of the floor added another problem and this seemed a better solution, it also used up most of the woodpile, which may have eventually ended up at the tip anyway. But, I’ve ended up with a very stable step and a much diminished stack of offcuts. I spent most of the day in the cellar and didn’t get round to doing any soldering today, but there’s always tomorrow.

Whilst working in S. Korea last year I had great fun testing out one of these gadgets - it just had to be done, purely in the interest of science you understand....

Sometime back we had a discussion about the missile with a man in it, the F104 Starfighter.

 

Here is the "wing" of an ex-Belgian F104 in NASA livery.

Leading and trailing edges were covered by safety bump covers. It was exposed in a couple of spots. It didn't hold a knife edge, but it was pretty pointy. I did not bring a measuring device and approximated with my thumb. The maximum depth of the wingtip is about 2".

Good morning one and all

 

I could go on for hours about bygone radio but I can do restraint.  Let us start with The Navy Lark, which is enthusing me because I will be seeing it live tomorrow night.  Before Stephen Murray as the Captain of Troutbridge was Dennis Price.  The supporting cast included a young Ronnie Barker, who played Able Seaman Johnson and was given the catchphrase "You're rotten, you are".  Leading Seaman Goldstein, the starboard lookout, was Tenniel Evans, who doubled as the Admiral.  Richard Caldicot played the hen-pecked Commander, later Captain, Povey, aka Thunderguts.   The hen who pecked him was his wife Ramona, wonderfully characterised by Heather Chasen.  She was also Wren Chasen, lusted after by Sub-Lieutenant Leslie Phillips.   There are many gaps in my recollection.  I do not know who provided the voice for "This is Intelligence speaking" but something tells me that it was Lawrie Wyman, who created the whole jolly thing and wrote most of it.   I'm sure that Michael Bates was in it for a time.  He went on to be in "It Ain't Half Hot Mum".  There is a lot left for me to remember and I may refresh my memory later by using Wikipedia.  Until then I rely on my own forgettery.

 

I don't recall Cliff Michelmore on "Family Favourites" but I do remember Jean Metcalfe.  For much of my awareness her opposite number in Cologne was Bill Crozier. Later he migrated to Radio Hallam when Keith Skues was programme director.  Keith celebrated his 81st birthday three days ago.  How time flies.  After the Light Programme transmuted into Radios 1 and 2 in 1967 "Family Favourites" was revamped with Michael Aspel in the presenter's chair.  For a while he had to follow Kenny Everett on Radio 1 which must have made it difficult for him to keep a straight face.  Trivia time: I met Kenny Everett at a party on the night that Kenneth Horne died.

 

I cannot end this unashamed wallow in nostalgia without "Round the Horne" and its predecessor "Beyond Our Ken".  Kenneth Horne was perhaps the finest straight man ever [in comedic terms!]  For me the highlight was the antics of Julian and Sandy, so brilliantly characterised by Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick.  When being gay was definitely well below the surface their 'polari' dialogue lifted it as far above the parapet as anyone could dare.  It has been said that BBC bosses did not understand much of the Goon Show - quite right too, for it is not something you are supposed to understand.  I think that the hierarchy were well aware of what Julian and Sandy were all about and it is to their everlasting credit that the limp-wristed duo were allowed out.

I was wondering whether Alcohol based aftershaves might become popular again with the current viruses around, so I looked up old Spice...

We gathered round the radio certainly until 1963, but I know we had a TV for 1966 (I wonder why) .

 

Dick Barton was an old favourite of Dads, so if ever it was on we all had to listen.. Since it was stopped in 1951 six years before I was born we can only have heard repeats or watched the films..

 

Mum of course preferred the Archers

 

 

Time I went and warmed up the lab by measuring two 100 Amp Shunts..

 

oh the entire site is suffering from Broad band Bandwidth problems, Why .. they went over to MS 365 which is of course partly online and those who can work from home on laps tops are being encouraged to do so (about 20 people out of 100 ish)
