Some of the speed bumps in our road are quite high as the new prat round the corner found out when hurtling up our 20mph limit road in his Porsche Carrera. It  made a beautiful crunching sound.

Let's hope the humps are not more than the 10cm  max stipulated by the govt, otherwise the council will be forced not only to repair his car, but also spend a small fortune on getting all the humps reduced in height.

Morning all, lovely sunny morning here with next to no wind for a change.  Carrots and artichokes were duly dug up yesterday, and soup made this morning.  It is now cooling before I liquidise it.  Once that is done and lunch eaten, I will try to get out for a walk and enjoy the sunshine.  Looks like today is going to be a good day all round.

Had hoped to do it by hand but, in making the first preparations, it turns out to have been built to withstand nuclear attack. And, at the same time as building that, several interior partitions were constructed also in brick. Attacked one of those yesterday only to find that it was supporting a 12" cast-in-situ lintel over a door. WTF! This is in a single storey building with just a loft above so no weight to bear down on the doorway. I now have to find a safe way of getting this monstrosity out of the way without it falling on somebody's head.

I once went to view a house with a small back garden, made even smaller by a wartime pill box taking up a lot of the space. The owner had made good use of it by using it as a tool shed and installing steps outside to use the flat roof as a sun lounge. A subsequent owner demolished it and found it easier than he expected due to 'concrete rot'.

They fitted these bumps to the roads in what was then the Gunnery School. First vehicle down the road.

A Chieftain..spat half the bumps out. Second vehicle...Challenger 1..cleared the rest

As has been noted, the UK is once again cut off, this time by the demise of Flymaybe, a name deservedly attached to Flybe.  When I was using them regularly, their performance was miserable, with many flights cancelled.  Funny how planes went 'technical' when the flights were not heavily booked - which meant folk used other airlines, which meant flights were even less heavily booked.....et infinitum.  I would say the are no loss, but they probably provided 80% of the flights from here, so....up the creek.  Luckily we use the boat mostly, nowadays.  They'll be rubbing their hands with glee!

It must be an age thing! I had almost four pages of ERs with which to acquaint myself since last visiting and, as I read through, I thought to myself "that requires a response" on a few occasions. Now that I have reached The Last Post (no, not the one played on a valveless copper tube of increasing diameter from mouth to bell end), I'm buqqered if I can remember what I felt was that important to comment upon.

Andy - sorry for you loss, yes - she was a part of your family. To others who have had memories revived by that post, we remember the good far more than the bad so treasure them and the memories!

 

I guess too that I am not alone in remembering Izal, the strong paper with a very slippery side that was most suitable for the cheap musical instrument that was the "comb and paper" kazoo. Use that the wrong side up and it guaranteed skid marks . One will be heading off to Costco later to see if the mass buying of shiny side up or quilted luxury forms has emptied that warehouse - we buy one pack of 45 at a time, not 10 panic packs, but it just happens that we are into the last half dozen rolls now. I shall also be in the market for one of their delicious spit-roasted former egg producers, some pots of their seafood cocktail in olive oil, wine for SWMBO and whatever else takes our fancy, 12 or 24 can trays of baked beans are unlikely to feature in our trolley. No doubt the budget will have gone south by three figures once we have loaded the car!

 

HAND GRENADE WARNING - TAKE COVER:

Between late spring 2016 and the end of 2019, the Palace of Westminster was able to agree on: almost nothing. Would the proposed possible closure of that palace until the end of the Members' and Lordships' summer recess really be missed? Or an alternative view - if the average age of the Upper House is over 70, and with the susceptibility of that age group to the worst effects of CORVID19, should we be praying that the said palace remains fully operational and allows unfettered access for one and all? I write that as one who fits into the Red Bench Brigade age group but would certainly NEVER have been invited to sit in their midst.

In a game of cribbage, the dealer holds 51 in hand and box - what cards would he/she see in their hand, in the box and as a turn-up? I shall be photographing such a combination tomorrow for entry into the Camera Club's latest comp - my initial suggestion of bare feet in various positions poking out from under a duvet was frowned upon and I couldn't get any models to pose for me .

Mornin' awl, it's wet and gloomy here.

 

The demise of Flybe isn't good news here unless you're bothered by aircraft noise.  They were a major user of Southampton Airport, just up the road, and a lot of jobs will be going.  If other operators don't pick up the traffic it's not good news for the airport.  They are planning a short extension to the runway to increase capacity, as some aircraft can't take off with a full load.  If the extension goes ahead it may attract other operators, but I wonder if it will. 

 

Mrs mole left on Sunday for 4 weeks in New Zealand.  She appears to have arrived, as I can access her Facebook.

 

The kitchen refit is underway but has hit a serious snag. The kitchen/diner had been created from the old kitchen and the former back room, The floor was vinyl over an older laminate floor, which I thought was laid on concrete throughout. It transpires that the kitchen end has a concrete floor underneath but the rest has boards laid on concrete. These are sodden due to a water leak we had last autumn running undetected under the laminate.  So now, instead of just relaying the floor at the kitchen end I have to have the lot ripped out, a screed laid, and wait for that to dry out before laying new laminate throughout, which will take several weeks.  I'm not happy but resigned to it; Mrs mole on the other hand.... doesn't know yet and is likely to freak out. 

 

The upside of the refit is Martyn and I can go to a pub to eat every evening.

While checking on the effect of flybe's collapse on Norwich I found it won't make any difference because Loganair took over the route some time ago, they also took over all the Scottish to Scandanavia routes  from them.

I suspect they'll be sniffing around  the Fraggle Rock routes ..

 

The military still issued the "goverment Issue" version of Izal until about 1983, after which RAF station started putting out notices about stealing loo rolls... The Men weren't stealing it.. they were just using the new softer issue for the first time instead of buying their own.. so consumption went way up!!!.

Morning all.  OK - it's just after noon.  Only just   

 

A most wet and cold day has been enjoyed at the House of Fun during which questions have been raised.  The questions being "How do you manage to keep warm?"  The answer lies in layering clothing, the deployment of decent thermals (including socks and gloves) and the use of those little warming packs one can get from the internet.  I tuck one into my beanie such that it applies warmth to my forehead without being seen by Joe / Joanne public.  

 

SWMBO has the afternoon off for research purposes.  I'm sure that will require me to research the innards of the tea-pot at some point in time but for now it's me and the cat, he being soundly asleep, and I have an urgent appointment with the frying pan and some Bay Connen Eggs.

Greetings all from LBG where the rain has set in and it is cold out.

 

We booked a holiday to Croatia before Christmas, just a week, using a travel agent for convenience. We can't use their travel insurance because of the combination of Younger Lurker's peanut allergy and his ASD.

 

I realised just now that I have not yet got around to booking the insurance. Let's hope the coronavirus has largely blown itself out by August!

afternoon from a very wet Surrey.

 

Early start this morning after dropping other half at station as then went straight to Mums. A number of tasks completed for her then back home via DIY store to pick up another 12 granite stepping stones. Laid them in the rain but now I have a route all the way to the shed without having to step on the sodden grass. I will require a few more to replace temporary paving slab that will be used elsewhere. 

 

Now back inside in the dry but will head to shed soon. Some one on a FB group has sent me an aerial shot taken in 1946 of Blackmoor station showing that the coal store does narrow at one end so now I can get on with that structure.

 

Tomorrow I will need to get the HO American layout ready for this weekends Freemo South meet.

Morning, bright but still chilly (at least for top down travel) on Long Island.

 

Work is "amazing"  Several changes effected on reports and NOW we have a new development.

A significant change late last year, that required a lot of finance department shuffling, open new accounts and re-distribution of monies, required a significant change to a report adding three new lines of detail, a split of a single item.

This change has NOW BEEN REVERSED, and it all has to be merged back into a single line - um, quickly if possible!??!

Finance flunkies not happy, me, who cares, more work and basically paying again to get us back to where we were in November

 

Picked up Jemma late evening - sadly too late for dinner, but as she was done with her current trip and wanted to catch the early plane home, decided to stay with me

Drove her to JFK first thing, then unfortunately took 55 minutes to get to the client, even though the weather was "perfect" apparently at least two separate fender-benders on the main freeway rendering fast/efficient travel impossible <sigh>

 

4 and sunny driving in, high of 10 expected and alarmingly a very small chance of snow/sleet showers later. Could miss us...

Afternoon all.

It is pouring with rain here now. Aditi did go to Waitrose today and there didn’t seem to be shortages of her preferred  brand of loo roll or paracetamol. She is off to see the nurse at the GP surgery later. Possibly her diabetes medication is working too well and she isn’t sure her asthma medication is working well enough. She doesn’t want to get into my situation of putting up with things for too long rather than doing something. I will drive and drop her off as parking in the evening can be difficult. 
Aditi is having a slightly fraught conversation with her Mum who is being rather rambly and anxious about Coronavirus. Aditi is being calm and rational but is having a hard time coping with MiL’s logic.

I can empathise.  I suffer in the same way.  The Dragon-in-Law has been as unpredictable and unreasonable as ever of late.  SWMBO reports several fraught conversations regarding the "need" to live in isolation in case any "disease-ridden <racist comment redacted>" are in the area.  

 

She has also expressed her opinion on SWMBO's personal library.  In terms of "Once that wretched thesis is handed in you can get rid of all those silly books".  

 

Is it any wonder I don't speak to her? And refer to her in such endearing terms?  We don't marry the entire family but we are often expected to share the planet with them as amiably as possible and accommodate their opinions.  "Accommodate" in this case being confined to "I hear you but I will not agree with you".  

 

In other news it is still raining quite heavily.  And quite icily.  All trips outside have been cancelled until further notice.  Self-isolation is expected to continue until 05.15 tomorrow morning.

All this talk of pleut, and it is really nice here today, sunny ans still, if a little chilly at 7c but it looks glorious - from inside!

 

I can sympathise with Rick's Dragon-in-law issues, I have two of the bu&&ers!  One is the birth version, one is a step-dragon.  Luckily, one is in Cornwall (sorry!) and the other in New Zealand, so I don't have to try to ignore them, it comes naturally.  Mrs NHN differs not a jot in her opinion, she can't stand the whole lot of them, who between them gave her an absolutely rotten childhood and teenage years.  She had no stability in her life until she stumbled across me, and said I Do 36 years ago next week.  The wonder of motorbikes.....which were the common denominator.
