Early Risers.

Good evening everyone 

 

Well the weather has been quite good today, it went a little overcast further afternoon, but we had no rain. I had quite a pleasant walk to the swimming pool this morning. The pool was fairly quiet today and despite not having been for 6 weeks, I still managed a mile, although it wasn’t all in one go. Once home I made myself a muggertea and then sat at the dining room table and checked the other MERG kits I’d built to see if I’d put the LEDs in correctly, this time I had, so no further work was required on them. I then started wielded the soldering iron and built an kit before dinner. Sheila came home midway through this, so I stopped and asked about her eye test. Her eyesight is definitely better, she can read an extra 2 lines then she used to be able to read. She’s ordered new glasses and has shine for varifocals, as she felt that her mid range vision was much sharper with than without. After dinner I completed another kit before setting off to pick up Ava, Evie and Max. Once home it we sat them all at the kitchen table and gave them a biscuit and drink before the decamped to the living room to watch a film. Tonight it was Max’s turn to choose and he decided on Jumanji! So I left them to it and went in the kitchen to start tea whilst listening to an old Wishbone Ash CD, ‘Argus’ that took me back a few years. 

 

Once I’d taken them home, we had a quick tidy up before sitting down to catch up on some recorded TV, I had a glass of Doombar, whilst Sheila had a Pepsi.

 

Andy. Sorry to read about Lady, it’s always hard when you lose a much loved pet. They really do become part of the family don’t they?

For my birthday, I was given tickets to travel behind Flying Scotsman in spring on one of those recently televised railways in the north west...further details later in the year...Now, do I take my first ever 00 steam loco, the F.S., with me?

Not to worry, we have plenty - baked beans, baked beans with sausages, and red kidney beans in brine.  But in all cases we normally keep a good stock of all of those as they are very handy - for snacks or meals in the first two instances, and an essential for chilli con carne in the case of the third one.  But baked beans were going quite rapidly when I looked the other day although oddly it was the lesser (in our opinion), Heinz, product which was the target of most shoppers - they're welcome to 'em.  And I noticed today in Tesco that the vacuum packed bags of prunes - something I again buy regularly - had almost vanished, very strange as they normally take quite a while to shift (er. sorry - off the shelve in the supermarket I mean).

 

Condolences to Andy - always a sad wrench to lose a four-legged family member.

Do you mean "speed bumps"? (aka Sleeping Policemen - sorry Jamie)  Also sometimes called speed humps, but I prefer not to think about that.

 

Every Spring we install said "beumps" (that's French you know) on the road in our little community. It's a (private) one lane road with a 10 MPH speed limit but a lot of the residents and cowboy contractors seem to think 30 to 40 is quite slow enough, hence the bumps.

 

The only problem is we have to remove the bumps in the Winter. It's not a lot of fun driving into one of those things with a snow plow.

It is a chilly morning here, but dry.  Mercedes went shopping yesterday evening and reported that the chaos of the previous week was not in evidence.  It would seem that the panic buying has now subsided a bit.

Hoping that the dry weather forecast is correct as today is demolition day. An ugly brick outhouse built in the 1960s (?) is to be pulled down using a JCB.

 

Had hoped to do it by hand but, in making the first preparations, it turns out to have been built to withstand nuclear attack. And, at the same time as building that, several interior partitions were constructed also in brick. Attacked one of those yesterday only to find that it was supporting a 12" cast-in-situ lintel over a door. WTF! This is in a single storey building with just a loft above so no weight to bear down on the doorway. I now have to find a safe way of getting this monstrosity out of the way without it falling on somebody's head.

Good morning one and all, with condolences to Andy.  Heartache comes nowhere near in my thankfully limited experience of losing a pet in this way.

 

It seems that Ireland is waiting with baited breath for the arrival of the virus – one way of not spreading it, I suppose.  As of yesterday there were two confirmed cases in the Republic.  It is nearly four months until I am due to cross the sea to Erin’s green shore and anything can happen in that time.  I have yet to speak to the providers of my travel insurance.  What they will make of someone who books his accommodation five months before sorting out his travel is anyone’s guess, to say nothing of booking my ticket for the afterparty so far ahead of the event.  I have my fingers crossed that no-one will try to cancel Dublin Pride.  It is the reason for my visit, an open air event and moves through the city centre, albeit slowly.  It is supported at a VERY high level – here a Taoiseach, there a past President – and a lesson which is re-learned from time to time is not to mess with the LGBT community.

 

I mentioned sorting out my travel just now.  It was never my intention to fly to Ireland.  This time last year I was just back from down under and in the grip of a virus-based chest infection which took two and a half months to shake off.  As some will recall, I tried to keep calm and carry on for the duration but failed miserably.  The prime suspect for the source of the wretched thing was one of three overnight flights in a sealed aluminium tube breathing recycled air.  With talk as I type of suspending Parliament for five months it seems to me that flight is a good way of spreading germs en masse.  Perhaps even more air journeys should be cancelled.

 

JohnDMJ, I don’t know whether the stage production of “The Navy Lark” that I am due to see on Saturday is part of a tour but I will ask when I am at the theatre.

A much better nights sleep , of 6.5 hours solid and that followed a 1.5 hour eyelid inspection soon after I got home..

 

Well one way of stopping infections in airlines is to let them go bust. As of a short time ago Flybe went bust, not a surprise really as it's been staggering around for years.  It should be a bit quieter at Norwich Airport for a while while the other airlines pick over the routes.. The corona virus will not make them hurry to do so..

 

The brick out house was probably designed to support several tons of earth piled over the top of it in preparation for an attack..

 

For some reason traffic was very very busy on the way home last night.  There was a loud blaring of horns from an NDR roundabout exit I wasn't using, three cars trying to fit into one lane exit.... No merge lanes.. About 15 minutes later the radio reported the roundabout was closed due to an accident...

 

I'm finally happy with the plans for the boat and keel. Having worked my way through the book and it's formula it all ties Up.  No further changes are required to the construction of the keel which will continue Saturday.

 

The Company is to celebrate international Women's day with a choice of  bacon roll, vegetarian or real sausage roll, or fruit. I will ask if they are going to do the same on international Men's day  (November 19th) if they say no, I will ask why they are being sexist..

 

With reference to that major system yesterday that calibrator calibration, I will Add the 100mV range is quite wide, as it's one end of the ranges we do, the Tightest is the 10V range whose 100% of spec is just 0.3 Parts per million.

 

Time to go measure some resistance 1 K ohm to be exact, also with a maximum specification of 0.3ppm movement in two months..

Morning all from a rather wet Charente, surprise, surprise it's raining again.   

 

Very sorry to hear your news Andy, pet loss is not easy.

 

Yesterday we got the dining room shutters back on and then removed the bedroom ones. This little person was discovered clinging to the wall behind one of them, all alone, not in a colony.

After blinking for a minute or two it flew off so not a lot else that we could do.   In the afternoon Andy and I went and sat by a railway line and put the word to right for an hour or three.   He's a retired engineer who spent his working life building nuclear power stations.   I had lent him our DVD of Chernobyl and was interested to her him say that it was an excellent and scientifically accurate film.

Anyway we did see some proper trains with locos.

This one is for Mick NB.

This is a regular infrastructure working that often has 3 or 4 locos, obviously being positioned for future work.

 

Then in a regular freight slot came this.

 

A Euro 4000 diesel in advertising livery.   

In the evening Beth and I watched the film of Downton Abbey and enjoyed it.

 

Breakfast has now been consumed but I need to phone the dentist as a gap has appeared where there shouldn't be one, fortunately painless.

Good morning everyone 

 

A bright, sunny but frosty start to the day here in the northwest of England. Sheila is busy getting ready to leave for her Zumba class, once she’s gone, I will head back downstairs and continue working in the cellar. A bit more tidying up and hopefully I’ll be able to shift an old Dexion shelving unit that was left in the cellar when we bought the house 40 years ago! When finished, I’m hoping to get a bit more done with the soldering iron later this afternoon.

Quite a lot of Swadlincote area are 'brick' with sharp sided angles - the difference between them and potholes is that you know how high they are - but most of the time you have to straddle two when driving because of parked cars that themselves are the result of planners making roads too narrow ... something that is still happening so parking on pathways (providing there is enough space for prams) is a must to make the roads passable.
