Ozexpatriate
It seems that the advertising related reformatting has settled down now that the software update is complete. Yesterday the Wheeltappers thread list page width was reduced with a very wide column of advertising placed to the right. Advertising banners at the bottom seem to be much larger, but happily the banner after the first post on a regular thread page seems to have gone away. I hope this is permanent. Gold members should be spared the external advertising.
Ozexpatriate
I hope those celebrating Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnival / Carnivale or any other pre-Lenten festivities enjoy their celebration. I did see that Carnivale festivities in Lombardy have been cancelled on account of COVID-19 concerns. New Orleans Mardi Gras parades resulted in two fatalities in the last week or so. As a result of the most recent fatality, 'tandem' floats were banned for today. Personally it seems incongruous to me to observe Mardi Gras without also observing Ash Wednesday and Lent, otherwise it's just an another day, but the same could be said of any holiday. Pancakes do sound good, but I'll skip today. 15 1

RMweb Premium J. S. Bach Posted February 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2020 (edited) Be off to our Shrove Tuesday pancakes in a little bit and the Ash Wednesday service tomorrow. After the service, the Pastor wants all of us to go to a local restaurant (with the ashes on our forehead) , I am looking forward to that. Edited February 26, 2020 by J. S. RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted February 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 25, 2020 We seem to be back. Evening all. It has been something of a pancake festival Upon the Hill of Strawberries. SWMBO decided that we would have spring onion and chive pancakes with the sweet potato tagine. Those were of her normal thick 'n' chewy style but perfectly good. I decided that dessert required my favoured thin 'n' crispy lemon and brown sugar ones. So we pancaked to the max and enjoyed the lot. I successfully flipped all the four which I made so I guess that makes me a successful t****r In other news conversation has been engaged in electronically with Former Neighbour (Australian) who has recently upgraded from Boyfriend 4 to Pre-husband 1 and was after some advice. Not on the upgrade but on the blue wig she was sporting at carnival! I pulled a blue striped shirt from the wardrobe earlier to press it for work in the morning and only realised when it was on the ironic board that it was my "trophy" shirt from the days of the Palace of Attendance. The uniform there was remarkably similar to the present one; I even wear the old uniform trousers at times as they are a better cut though the shirt, bearing the logo, cannot be worn here. It is time to unlock the sleeping car and prepare for eyelid inspection. Tomorrow is forecast to be somewhat cold by the standards of this winter. Not wet but breezy and freezy. Thermals and thick socks have been prepared. G'night all. Sleep well.

RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted February 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 25, 2020 Good evening everyone We left home just about on time and arrived at the hospital just after 9 o’clock. Sheila was seen quite promptly and she passed all the eye tests with flying colours. Sheila was then given a clean bill of health, told that she no longer needed to use the eye drops she’d been given and told that she wouldn’t need to go back to the hospital again. She was however referred to the corneal section of Manchester Eye Hospital for further investigation of her FCED (Fuchs Corneal Etherial Dystrophy). We set off for home and we’re back for about 10:50, in plenty of time for a mid morning brew. Once the tea had been drunk, I set up the soldering iron and fitted the link that was missing in one of the point control boards that I’d identified yesterday, it was then tested and packed away with the rest. After dinner I started testing some more point monitoring boards. Hear I’m pleased to say, I scored a 100% success rate. Goodnight all 14

Not to mention finances. As much as people gripe about the cost of model railway equipment, it would be difficult to spend as much. My back of the envelope sums suggest that it would take around a thousand locomotive models so it might be possible. Unless of course you built a bespoke home specifically to accommodate a model railway. The price of a home built to accommodate a large railway versus a smaller home might readily equate to a Bentley.

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 26, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 26, 2020 5 hours ago, pH said: "Carnival" has the same kind of history. The word derives from the Latin for 'goodbye to meat'. Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Carnival happens around the same time. They were celebrations in advance of the penances to be done during Lent. Penances involved giving things up, often rich foods, so stocks of these foods would be used up immediately before Lent, so that they would not spoil during the coming forty days. (Other vices are also often practised, as these too may be given up for Lent!) I came across something years back which suggested there was a practical reason for Lent because at the time at which it commences it would be likely that the over winter food stocks would be running out and also it would be senseless to start slaughtering animals during what was basically the likely period of offspring being born and requiring to suckle. Thus milk supplies were in any event likely to be reduced as well as stocks of other things running low. Thus the idea was that it gave time for nature to recover although quite why it would include eggs seems rather odd because hens were not likely to stop laying (unless there was expected to be results from the cockerels' activities). However there don't see to be any contemporary references to this idea so maybe it was one which foundered due to lack of firm evidence? 14 3

Popular Post chrisf
Good morning one and all I enjoyed my pancakes yesterday afternoon. I chickened out of using granulated sweetener as a garnish because I found just enough caster sugar to do the job. The final pancake, much smaller than the others, was garnished with strawberry jam just for a change. Does anyone eat pancakes on days other than Shrove Tuesday? It seems a shame not to. Today, of course, is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent when one is supposed to give up things. A friend was kind enough to remind me the other day of what I said to him in 1985: “Trust my mother to give up living for Lent”. With her usual immaculate timing she had passed away on my birthday a few days earlier. Last year I was rather peeved to have missed the Sydney Mardi Gras celebration by a couple of weeks. I soon got over it when I watched some footage of the parade on YouTube. Many of the young gentlemen sporting themselves on the streets of Sydney were wearing nothing but pink speedos. I may be a bit flamboyant at times but I have neither the courage nor the build to do that! Good luck to those who do though. Tonight a fellow HMRS member is giving a talk on the model of Buckingham that he helped to build for a now disbanded club. If his talk is as good as the model it will be an excellent evening. Best wishes to all Chris 16 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted February 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2020 (edited) Mooring Awl, Inner Temple Hare, 1012 /632. A two piece sleep, interrupted at 01:05 by a large thump on the house... What it was I have no idea, the radio reports no incident, but it was loud enough to wake all 3 of us, and required a wander round by me... The most likely is some fly boy going supersonic down the north sea closer to the land than he should be.. Eventually I got back to sleep, waking very late, blue tailed flying insect time... Norwich Station is in a mess according to the radio having only just reopened, 3 platforms,, 1,2,and 3 still being closed, no details yet but it's reported as a police incident... Dillet… I need a Dillet,,, or to be more precise Blue Moon needs a Dillet. depending how a boat keel or aircraft wing is fitted to the body and also the speed range of said vehicle they may need a Dillet.. High performance yachts with an excess of wind power don't need them, and most heavily swept back wing aircraft or swept back keel boats don't need them . When the water which had happily minding it's own business is suddenly interrupted by the keel, it should flow round either side. however where the keel meets the body there is a boundary layer as well with nowhere to go and it forms a vortex and can even flow to the wrong side of the keel unpredictably. A Dillet is a small forward projection of the wing / keel joining the wing /keel to the body at a shallower angle to the approaching water /Air, that persuades the water there to split and ramp slightly away from the body reducing the vortex and allowing the keel / wing to produce more lift. Or so says some interesting information I've found on the net.. The change to the keel involves one piece of wood, but more complicated cutting of the skin when the time comes so it will be done.. Time I wandered down to the lab, A big set of resistors needs calibration... With SWMBO being out weaving, pancakes were not in evidence last night, they may appear tonight but we have pancakes occasionally anyway, only savoury for me these days though.. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted February 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2020 Morning all from a sunny Charente. It may well rain later. Pancakes were duly consumed last night then we watched two episodes of The Stranger and enjoyed them. The house is still quiet and morning orders have not yet been posted. However breakfast has been consumed. This morning's main job will be to put the ironwork on to the sitting room shutters and then re hang them. My mate who is coning up to help will then help me to take the dining room shutters off. They will be the focus of my attention for the next week or so. Only 36 more holes to file on that set. Another 105 on the ones that still await. Regards to all. Jamie 12
RMweb Premium Popular Post southern42 Posted February 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2020 (edited) ' morning all from red dragon land. Last night's pancakes superb despite the fact that I tipped in more milk than required - compensated by adding a bit more batter to the frying pan! Thicker pancakes but fewer to make! Topped with squeezed lemon and thin scattering of sugar. Remaining lemon squeezed into orange juice and drunk HOT - different! but Nice! Don't panic - be adventurous! __________ Best wishes Polly Edited February 26, 2020 by southern42 20
