RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted February 22, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 22, 2020 Evening. Baz, Akaroa is memorable to us for the most voracious sand flies we came across in NZ, absolute killers. Wines in Blenheim indeed have much to recommend them, but Cloudy Bay isn't what it used to be, but costs a lot more than it used to. Their Te Koko is worth having a glug of, though! We try to get it for Christmas. Little report other than it has been 'one of those days' when much goes wrong, a favourite lunch place served rubbish, had to go shopping on a Saturday, etc. Nothing life threatening! 6
RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted February 22, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 22, 2020 Evening all from Estuary-Land. The pain in my knee seems to be subsiding, hope its gone by the morning. After a blood test a couple of years ago my doctor asked me if I drank a lot of alcohol, I said quite truthfully that I was practically teetotal. The blood test had shown that I had a fatty liver.
RMweb Gold Popular Post BoD Posted February 22, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 22, 2020 I have just landed back from Glasgow and had a most enjoyable time. I even managed to grab a a chat with Mick (NewBryford) although that did involve an exchange of coinage of the realm. There were some great layouts. However, for the first time I can remember I was hit twice. Once by a rucksack and once by a smell. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky up to now. There does seem to be two new types of punter that I have noticed of late too. Firstly the ones who just take a photo with a mobile phone, often thrusting it into other’s line of sight, and then quickly disappear without really looking at or watching the layout. They can’t all be there for just a short while or on their lunch break. Then there’s the ones with the video camera who insist on doing a pan shot of the full layout except they haven’t looked first and their lens ends up stuck up your left nostril by the time they’ve finished panning. Grumpy? Moi? I’m rather tired and so to bed. Goodnight all. 2 2

They're special aren't they? The Aussies ones are almost as bad. We spent a night at the hugely popular and very pretty Tidal River on Wilson's Promontory. The only accommodation, barring the shop and a hut used by school groups, is the tent you bring. They manage the fragile ecosystem carefully and don't allow any form of development. So there we were, us and a couple of hundred other tents, all trying to cool down on a 25-degree night on the sand. And trying to deal with the sand (a/k/a March) flies which were biting everyone silly. Not a good night. Which was a shame because barring a solitary day trip which required around eight hours behind the wheel it was the only time I got there. The latter part of today has been a miasma of frustration. SWMBO unable to find a movie she could enjoy - and ending up with B. Jones's Diary - and me trying to find a reason why a three-way point only passes low current in one direction and none in the other two despite being wired in accordance with Mr. Lambert's instructions. SWMBO has retired to inspect her eyelids. I still have life in me so the question is do I browse the intertubes inanely until I fall asleep or do I make a brew and enjoy the KitKat which is lurking in front of me at the desk? The two are not mutually exclusive. And on that note I bid you all a good night. Sleep well. 18

RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted February 22, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 22, 2020 Good evening everyone We both got up late this morning and ended up running round like blue @rsed flies and didn’t have the time to log into ER’s as we had Ava coming round to spend the day with us. A very pleasant day was had where Ava and I spent the largest part of the morning in the kitchen, where she assisted me in making a fruit tea loaf and also a tray of rocky road, half of which she took home with her. Whilst we were in the kitchen, Ava asked if we could listen to Kate Bush again, so I put on the “Hounds Of Love” CD. Once we’d finished, she asked to watch the Kate Bush documentary that we’d watched together a few weeks ago. Ian came to pick Ava up about 3 o’clock but didn’t stop as he was then off to pick Vickie up from the hairdressers. Once Ava had gone, I redrew the circuit diagrams for the circuit boards I just built as I’d made a couple of amendments during construction and I wanted the drawings to be as built, because I’d inadvertently made an error in one of the original drawings that I noticed during construction. I’m a firm believer in having accurate drawings, especially when it comes down to fault finding. Luckily it didn’t take long, I also amended the drawings I’ve made on the laptop too. Goodnight all. 19 1

Popular Post chrisf
Good morning one and all Impulsively, I paid my first visit to Risex yesterday after a Big Daddy breakfast in Morrisons and an error message in the car which made no sense to me and has now stopped showing. In Princes Risborough I had to park in a residential street, fortunately without retribution, and enjoyed a cuppa with Mike Stationmaster and son Robert at the show. I may well go to Risex again but not next year for the date is unsuitable for me. Already there are too many days in 2020 when I could usefully be in more than one place at once. Serves me right for having so many interests, I suppose. Polybear, thank you for your observations. The expression “ravaged by time and the elements” was my paraphrase of what the guy said. He found and photographed places where the odd tile has slipped and water has got in. The insulation that he was trying to sell me is sprayed on the underside of the roof and would supplement the fibreglass or whatever it was that I laid between the rafters 30+ years ago. I may or may not get a second opinion but not yet. One of my regular e-mail correspondents tells me that my mails now reach him as ‘.eml’ files, which worries him. I had an on-line conversation with someone from BT last night after which, surprise surprise, I am none the wiser. Have any gentle readers come across this reconfiguration? I shall forget all about it this morning for as long as I am at the multiplex watching ‘1917’. Best wishes to all Chris 21

Fir tree/pine timber is recommended to be stood to season for a minimum of 5 years according to one of my tree surgeon acquaintances. Five years might do the trick in the Sun-starved UK but Summers tend to be hot and dry here. I can get a good indication of the moisture content with my DVM and one year is quite sufficient. Five years is not a problem if the wood is stored in a completely dry place but if there is sufficient moisture it will start to deteriorate in that time. 13

Our current house is perched on a basalt outcrop that was likely exposed during one of the many Lake Missoula floods. RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted February 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 23, 2020 Visited Ferrymead today. Was asked if I wanted to drive a tram. Not with the on off brakes used... Great place. Buildings, vehicles, trams, trolley buses, steam trains, diesel trains and diesel trains. Of which the trams were running..as was the model railway. If anyone is visiting down here the trains run every 2nd Sunday in the month. Now for a beer before an early start on the train to picton Baz

Ozexpatriate
I posted this in the Australian bushfires thread. It's an interactive chronology by ABC News of the Australian bushfires starting with the fires in Queensland during September, the spread of fires with increasing summer heat and ending with the January rains. My brother sent it to me. It is exceptionally well done. I visited family last October. At that point the Binna Burra lodge had already burnt down. The subtropical rain forest around Binna Burra was not considered "prone" to bushfires the way many parts of Australia are. While I had never made it to Binna Burra, it was fondly remembered by my parents. This sort of scene would be repeated over an over in the next four months of Australian summer. Here the weather is quite nice for this time of year. Normally we get 3" - 6" of rain in February. We've had 1.29" so far (1.59") less than normal for this part of the month. It is supposed to rain a little tomorrow (perhaps ¼"), but not much after that. Edited February 23, 2020 by Ozexpatriate 9
