Early Risers.

Good evening everyone 

 

After dinner I made a start on cutting the veroboard into sizes suitable for the circuit boards I’ve designed and cut the track on the largest, this will be used as a master to make a jig so that production can be speeded up. Two of the smaller boards only require a handful of tracks cutting, so I did these by hand, whilst waiting for Sheila, who was sat in the dentist’s chair having work done on repairing the crown which broke a few weeks ago. In the 30 minutes or so that I was there, I completed 30 circuit boards!

 

On the subject of house moves and the number of addresses that people have had, I’ve moved home 14 times, mostly with my parents, but of these 2 have been either when I lived on my own and 2 since I’ve been married. My present address has been the longest I’ve ever lived in 1 place, in a couple of months it will be 40 years! The vast majority have been within a few miles of where I was born, but we had 3 house moves during the 18 months that we lived in Canada during the 60’s. 

 

I am also among the few on this thread that is living for a number of years with prostate cancer. Mine was aggressive from the start and was found by accident, as I was under investigation for another condition, the blood test was requested as a “we’ll get this done, just to rule it out” scenario. All had gone well until last year when my readings started to go up sharply, the are still low by normal (there’s that word again) standards, but it was the rate of change that drew concern, so I am now once again being monitored. My next appointment is in 3 weeks time.

My Dad went to Normandy as a Redcap a couple of days into the invasion then through France and Belgium into Holland, often with front line troops marking safe routes to follow or acting as a Despatch Rider between HQ and the sharp end. He was then sent to India where he spent nearly two years attached to the Indian Army trying to keep order in the country in the run up to the British withdrawal in 1947. 

Two of my maternal grandmother's cousins were killed in Palestine in WW1. My Mother's great uncle served on gunboats around the Med in the early 1900s before being posted to Admiral Jellicoe's flagship for the duration of WW1 and taking part in the Battle of Jutland.

Finally the Lurgi seems to have abated, back to swimming today after about five weeks gap. Thankfully I was only a couple of lengths short of my usual, so looks like recovery is nearly complete.

What an eventful drive home from grandad duty tonight. Firstly a P!ll0ck cut straight across in front of me from a Give Way sign, just missed him by evasive action and an emergency stop, then five miles later an eejit opened a door into traffic without looking and hit my wing mirror. I couldn't quite avoid it because of oncoming traffic but fortunately the impact was at very low speed and only 1/2 inch from the end, just turning it inwards without any structural or glass damage. 

Must research dashcams when I get up, I've taken to wearing a bodycam when out cycling lately and I think one is needed in the car as well.

Much more seasonal here, thank goodness. It's snowing but it's cold enough that it you can walk around in it without getting wet. I managed to slice about fifteen feet of Douglas Fir into rounds . The ones near the bottom of the tree were about 20 inches in diameter which taxed my little chainsaw. They also taxed my back and thigh muscles loading them into the tractor's bucket.

 

I do like this time of year. The snow is really pretty and it covers up all the carp around the house. If the highways are in reasonable shape tomorrow I'll probably head for the hills and strap planks on to my feet.

 

At the last count, since we were married, we moved five times in Scotland over ten years then five times in the US over thirty-eight years although we did return to Idaho after a six year spell in California. We've owned this place for 24 years which is a record for us. We also had a flat in Utah for a few years, but that was just for skiing.

It was quite likely in Maine.  The Canadian Pacific line between Halifax and Montreal crosses Maine rather than making the big circle around.

On my first flight to London, the air traffic controllers were off so we were bused to Niagara Falls, USA. We had a police escort from the border to the airport, where they locked us in again.

The Q:

I heard that there are some vehicles that don't turn off the accessory circuits unless you get out by the driver's door. This was on motorhomes which often have more convenient exits. I drained the battery once leaving the GPS turned on for 3 weeks.

Danemouth:

Toronto's last batch of Trolley buses had some low railway bridges to go under. They made a bend in the trolley poles to keep the shoes at a better angle.  The same vehicles had a fiberglass roof. The retriever ropes for the poles had a rubber ball mounted in them to keep the poles from slamming into the roof after a few had been cracked by the impact.

 

Had a call from Dr.'s nurse today. Apparently my knee has arthritis. I'm to keep taking the Tylenol.

My first 22 years were spent on one street. We moved across the street from number 8 to number 9 on my eighth birthday. My parents live there still, but I moved to Southern California where I then had at least four addresses in The OC over a period of five years. After that I lived in the two neighbouring towns in the western suburbs of Chicago before moving to Oregon about 22 years ago. Eleven addresses in four states and two countries.

Not sure Q's  Land Rover has been idle too long. Could be a bad battery or a dodgy connection, and don't assume "ground" really is. After a lot of murking around I eventually discovered the ground strap between the gearbox and chassis on my 6 volt '55 VW was non-existent.

May I offer a belated welcome to Lantavian.  Something is wrong with my fingers because “belated” came out as “blasted”, which isn’t quite right.  I have “News Briefing” on in the morning but am not always fully conscious despite being a qualified early riser.  As I recall, my last radio appearance was having a mic stuck under my nose by Gareth O’Callaghan when BBC Radio Bedfordshire, as it then was, was relaying carol singing from Bedford high street in 1985.  My first was on a Ted Ray programme, “Down In The Jumble”, recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in 1961 and featuring me laughing.  Hmmm, that’s enough murky past for one day.  Away from radio, it was an unmodified me who enjoyed his trip on the Ghan this time last year.  Oh, the unlimited alcohol!  I did my best, honest.

 

We seem to be recounting our early times.  I hail from Horn Lane, Acton.  My time at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, from 1959 to 1962, was chequered but I had some distinguished schoolfellows who included the late actor Alan Rickman and the musician John Kirkpatrick, who I am pleased to say is still very much alive.  One of the teachers from my era was Miles Wootton, who took the bottom set for French when I was in the top set and later made a name for himself on the folk circuit.  Nice chap.

 

I’m sorry but I need to get angry now.  In the Australian state of Victoria some trees in a timber plantation have been felled.  Koalas climb trees, it’s what they do.  It seems that nobody bothered to check that the trees being felled did not have koalas in them.  Sadly they did and many innocent animals have been killed or wounded.  After the carnage wrought by the bush fires I despair for the future of this endangered species.  Those responsible for this outrage should be brought to book, fined and thrown into gaol.  If ever there were time for a public example to be made it is now.

Cold and dark here. Early breakfast with no tea or coffee this morning. I am off to Southend hospital later and can’t eat after 7am. At some time during the day I get injected with radioactive substances and have to eat my sandwich.

It is indeed nice to see ‘new blood in ERs.  
It would also be nice to see some of the missing ‘old blood’ pop back in.

 

Yesterday was spent at the National Trust titivating and tidying the layouts.   Winter closure is the time for their spring clean and maintenance. Fortunately there is a good team of volunteers.  
 

Unlike some on here I am definitely not Nomadic. I have lived in the same town here on the Durham coast for my entire life. In one way, I have been fortunate to be able to make progression in my career without changing establishment.   And we were happy here with strong family and friendship ties.  Even when I went to Uni I was just along the road at Durham.  At least I could easily pop home some weekends for a good feed and to have my washing done.  I suppose in doing this I have missed out on many things but, overall, have no regrets.

I'm sure they know what they are doing but might a radioactive sandwich be an alternative?

 

It was quite a while ago and as I had a touch of cancer they thought it best to do a bone scan. They injected some stuff into me that had a half-life of about ten minutes. It showed up in my bone marrow PDQ and the emissions produced an impressive image of my entire skeleton. I was probably glowing, just not in visible light.

Greetings one and all........

 

Moved several times as a kid......from police house to police house  ( remember them?) but only two houses as a grown up.....the last current one for 30 years!

 

Never travelled much as a child, the odd trip to Porthcawl to stay in a gas lit caravan or to stay at my Aunty Betty's in Ilfracombe. Many a happy an hour sat on a platform trolley awaiting whatever trundled in.

 

Mind you, cheap day excursions, mystery tours and the odd three day trip ticket  saw me getting about, amazing how many depots you could visit or find on an excursion......the furthest in a day was Cardiff to Newcastle and return......what a long day that was!

 

Mind you, passed out of training in the RM then in a matter of weeks it was Crete, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Hong Kong,  followed by Norway, Denmark, Germany

.....Not forgetting Ascension Island and other place far down south. Still the penguins were friendly.

A very good nights sleep, for Me but not for Ben the unhappy Collie, he kept getting up and wandering around and didn't seem comfortable at all..

 

I think My Dad may have been ingesting radio active substances, and been through a magic donut, as they have finally found out whats wrong. Two blood clots in his heart and one in his lungs.. Not surprisingly they've put him on warfarin, and they are not letting him out..
