Perhaps I have amplified how good it was but it remains my personal benchmark for a chocolate cake. I had my first taste of Black Forrest cake nearly fifty years ago. Best of all it was in Germany not far at all from the Black Forest and it was home made by a lady who was a native of the region.

At the time a couple of friends were volunteers on his line at Walsall and I was an occasional helper as well and we all got an invitation to stay in one of the carriages for the weekend and paint the bridge whilst the BR line was closed. As I have now retired, I'm sure we'll get to make a return visit soon . . . . . . it's been a long time since our last visit ! Mike Timely comment, Mike. I found some photo albums in the workshop on Saturday. One of the photos showed two ladders down on the mainline standing up against the centre section with a painter up on each one. Was one of them, you, I wonder?

After a while searching for somewhere to go in what could be dodgy weather I suggested a drive into Wales and Betws y Coed was mentioned. Now, it just so happens that there is a small railway museum there........ Back later providing we aren't waylaid by marauding bands of pachyderms when we cross the border. Dave PS, It looks increasingly like my visit to Stafford this weekend will be on Sunday. Who else of the ER persuasion will be there? Hi Dave, The Swad Mafia are meeting up with the Manchester Mob again as we did at Telford, so may see you there. We will be in the little café opposite the entrance for Breakfast about 9am as usual. 13

The others were Paul Martin and Phil Traxson who at the time were both members of the local model railway group at Mickleover, Derby, as well as both being volunteers on the Festiniog Railway - Paul now lives in York but is still a driver there, and Phil who was often his fireman has recently moved to live in Porthmadog. Thanks for the memories . . . . . . . Mike
RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 28, 2020 A'noon all, I made the trek to Guildford (all of 21 miles) and a very nice man named Mike fixed the loco for me. The problem turned out to be a couple of loose wheel nuts He straightened up the coupling rod and tightened the nuts and then did some test running and everything seemed to work beautifully. I will give it a more extensive test tomorrow. No Stafford show for me , that is a step too far for a day trip so all being well I'll be heading to Alton on Saturday. Now awaiting the invasion of grandchildren x 2 as school has just finished so the house should resound with noises of the nice and happy kind.

RMweb Gold Popular Post roundhouse Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 28, 2020 Good afternoon. A good night in our local Harveys pub last night. My other half passed through East Croydon about 15 minutes after someone was stabbed and died on the station footbridge. Only found out this morning so just aswell the trains were running Ok thus not needing to change at that station. Today i have been doing decals to On30 locos for someone. Now drying after adding a clear varnish coat to seal them before weathering tomorrow. A nice sunny but cold day here. 13

RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) I did get my medication from the chemist and then we set off to a nearby village for lunch. Very nice lunch too. On a recent trip to the Hyde Hall gardens someone coming the other way came round a corner too fast and hit my door mirror. The mirror and housing were fine but the turn indicator repeater in the mirror was broken. As I was a bit busy with hospitals last week I didn’t do anything. I decided not to wait until the next service and managed to identify the part. Easily available from eBay or easily available from online Land Rover dealers (generally cheaper than eBay traders). Removing the mirror cover is either difficult requiring a special tool or really easy depending on the advisor! I watched a video and the special tool seemed to be screwdriver. The part ordered on Sunday evening arrived this morning. I used old credit cards as levers and used the same technique as removing model diesel or tender bodies to release the clips. Swapping over the broken unit for the new one was easy and it all works. Tony Edited January 28, 2020 by Tony_S 24
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 28, 2020 Temperature meter finished, Keel design finished, ancient current shunts finished, an American set of newish current shunts arrived and started. I need to print out one more keel pattern. Dads back in hospital, this time for a chest infection. I'm requested to drop by the surgery to pick a bottle to fill, and to book an ECG. Obviously they didn't like my weeks BP testing. Time I think to recover from Last nights lack of sleep, eyelid detailed examination required.. 1
Popular Post Ian Abel
Morning. All quiet here yesterday, today expected to be much the same. This evening a get together with half of our traveling friends as the "other halves" go to their book club. We're always amazed at how easily we can solve all the world problems in a couple of hours with some decent wine and cheese Ladies will join us at the end to share some dessert, and temper the discussion -8 and cloudy getting the newspaper, heading for a high of -5. Rather warmer than usual for this time of year! Tally ho.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 28, 2020 I got a letter this morning inviting me to make an appointment for the next heart test. So I did and will be attending next week. Requires stopping some medication for a few days and all caffeine for a day before the test. Test involves radioactive tracers , possibly a bicycle and a cheese sandwich (bring your own). There are suggestions instead of cheese, sausage rolls are one. Perhaps I could have a cheesy sausage roll sandwich. . Tony 15

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Bob, if you duplicate a post all you have to do is click on 'report post' in the top corner. When the options come up click on the second one down 'duplicate post' and the mods will deal with it. Andy, I think Polly's orange juice was placed on top of the microwave and there was no intention to heat it. Time to put the kettle on, be back later. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2020 Evening all, A basically quiet day disturbed only by the smell of paint and lack of access to the toaster so time could be spent entertaining the mummy cat (or being conned into worshipping her in a way she appreciates). As the show season revs up the incidence of. clashes increases. This weekend it will be Alton vs. Stafford. The first involves a drive of about an hour, not too arduous and a good road but Reading becomes almost unavoidable without a significant detour; the other involves a drive to get me to Reading in time for a through train - 2 hours on an XC Voyager but no need to change and then the shuffle 'bus ride (well it shuffled along the last time I went on it). Alton is not a big show but comes with well done (yes, literally) bacon sandwiches and has a good model shop just along the road. Stafford involves three different climates in the three different 'halls' so you're (i.e. I'm) either too hot, or too cold, or damp but it's a big show. However last Saturday to the So'ton show was a long day so in due deference to my continued comfortable(?) domestic existence I had better not go for another long day just after the previous one especially with two successive weekends of shows coming up in March. So Alton it will be. (incidentally Stafford on Sunday is a non starter due to the poorer train service). Enjoy the rest of your day folks.
tigerburnie
Evening all quiet sort of day, did the tes cos grand prix in the morning and picked up a nice 12 year old Highland Park malt whisky for a price not seen for a while, well happy, also tipped the bill over 50 squids, so I get 5p a litre off my fuel next fill up, bonus. No muddling today, but out with a muddling pal tomorrow, so no doubt much talk of parallel bits of metal and things that tootle along on them. I've also taken the plunge with a new "proper" dcc controller, on the waiting list, just waiting for the next shipment to arrive and an email demanding modelling tokens.
