RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted January 10, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 10, 2020 Welcome back to the Hill of Strawberries where I have spent a frustrating afternoon trying to get the computer to work. It began extremely slowly. It then reached the "snail-with-zimmer-frame-would-go-faster" stage before refusing to even restart. It has always had a firewall activated and self-checks via two independent systems for anything nasty. The cache was finally cleared during a 20-minute tea-break. It should take a few seconds to do that. I located a link to OneSpace which is the current offering - nay inbuilt embuggerence - which tries to send all your stuff to a cloud somewhere allegedly to save space. OneSpace has been disabled. Things are running much better now. I hadn't realised that the latest versions of Word and MacOS combined to prevent the simple act of click-dragging a Word file onto the desktop or to an email as an attachment. Why on earth "fix" something so simple when it works? Money and marketing no doubt support the answers. The fix has been to click-drag the required files via the Documents folder instead of Desktop which takes a few seconds longer than a direct click-drag to email but hey ..... The House of Fun wasn't this morning. SIgnal problems around the Whitton triangle, an (alleged - it has yet to be fully investigated) SPAD at Wimbledon blocking the lines and then causing severe residual delays, then the discovery of a person no longer living beside the line at Thorpe Crossing (near Egham) combined to cause widespread disruption. All in a day's work. Anyone waiting for Down Main Slow Line services might have heard a familiar voice on the PA amid the monotony of pre-recorded gumph. SWMBO is expected home very soon. Our weekend can then start. 5

Better than some of the floating skyscrapers that we see. It goes quite well too. It isn’t the largest cruise ship but the Captain did say it is the largest ocean liner. I suppose some people would complain that it doesn’t seem to be affected by Atlantic storms but having been in one on board QM2 it is quite nice not to be thrown about. 12

I did for the first one (Tegwen); she was the Matriarch, and fully bi-lingual, but I found that any linguistic limitation was actually mine, as my being a native English speaker, I couldn't think quickly enough in Welsh for Sheepdog trial competitions, although perfectly fast enough of tongue, for farm stock-work; so, my second two competition dogs (Tegwen's sons from consecutive litters) were trained in English voice commands and on whistles, but whistles are generally no use around the farm, as your hands/fingers/whistles are covered in "unpleasantness" and not want to be inserted into your mouth. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 10, 2020 Evening all, Nothing of note to report, well nothing I can think of. I do commend considerable care in going through paperwork left by our forebears and clearly my dad did the same when his dad died because I same across correspondence between my grandfather and the church commissioners complaining loudly about the tithes they were exacting on his agricultural output. (yes folks tithes were still levied by the C of E well into the interwar period). However he clearly achieved a much quicker victory when claiming against the LNER for one their engines destroying parts of his crop of, I think, wheat due to the injudicious spreading of sparks across his field next to the LNER main line. As far as the water bill is concerned we get a reduction (of not a vast amount) for not putting surface water into their drains. We don't seem to suffer shortages around here but perhaps if we did I could sell them some from my 5,000 litre rainwater storage tank; it wouldn't be easy to get any out of the soakaways which other gutters drain into. incidentally we are a little unusual I suspect in having separate mains drainage for rain/surface water apart from the mains draining for less pleasant household output. Enjoy teh rest of your day/evening one and all

Mine periodically offer it but it seems to be more of 'do you know why you're taking these drugs' than 'do you need them'. I've just checked my repeat request for methotrexate (MTX) (ran out on Wednesday, requested Thursday) and, for the third time it has been refused (although a second request 24hrs later has previously been accepted). Rheumatology clinic Monday morning. Words will be said. Since my last entry (I'll refrain from "my last post"!) on here, I've tried renewing my PPC on-line; it refused me since my current one does not expire until later this month. Sierra Oscar Delta India Tango! Whilst I was an in-patient (2018 and 2019), they would not write me up for MTX. Thought: get my 2 month supply of the usual drugs before PPC expires and (if necessary) buy one script of MTX meantime at £9.00. Saves me £20.10 on a 3 month renewal of a PPC which I only need for 2 months. Edited January 10, 2020 by JohnDMJ 3
RMweb Premium polybear Posted January 10, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 10, 2020 For those contemplating a Smart Meter, during the installation process please make sure you unplug ALL sensitive equipment first; the installer warned me to unplug TV, PC, Laptop etc. etc. - which I did. The Fridge Freezer didn't even occur to me (or him). Guess what wouldn't fire up when supplies came back on line after the new meter was fitted.... It was a Frost Free jobbie, so had microprocessor whatsits on the control board. I was realistic enough to realise that the chances of a successful claim were somewhat less than knitting fog 1 1 4

It's already turning to rain, which means that what's on the ground is now turning to slush. I'll have to shovel the (about 1 in 4) driveway before we go out in the car, or we could end up in the backyard of the house across from us. It's going to get cold here next week, too. Not as cold as -4F, but down to about 9F. Son and family are supposed to be starting out to drive back to Nelson tomorrow - it's a 2-day journey at this time of year. We'll see if that happens as scheduled. It's here now too. Looks like "proper" snow this time. I bought an electric snow chucker for the deck. it didn't work for toffee on the last snow we had. It was much too wet. 1 2
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 10, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 10, 2020 (edited) Evening all from Estuary-Land. I use a substance called Oust to de-scale my kettle and very effective it is too. Also it is available in most supermarkets. I usually have to descale my kettle every other month. My paternal grandmother spent her last years living in Thornton Heath, GDB's and a couple of other ER's neck of the woods. The water was so hard that an electric kettle would only last for about three months before it was so scaled up that it had to be thrown away. Oust can also be used on coffee makers and steam irons. The main ingredient is formic acid that is the stuff that makes stinging nettles sting and is also squirted by ants. RMweb Gold Kingzance Posted January 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 10, 2020 For descaling purposes, any of Lactic Acid, Citric Acid or Acetic Acid will work, the former is generally the quickest. Citric Acid is available in powder form and can be sent through our postal system. The more aggressive mineral acids like Sulphuric, Nitric and Hydrochloric are far more difficult to handle safely. 5 2

Popular Post brianusa
Latest update of the weather forecast for the PNW. The promised snow is due to arrive here on Sunday in great quantities. Whether it will be or just TV weather persons love of exaggeration, we will soon find out. Get a couple of inches on the ground and some poor girl is sent out to report and throw a few snowballs. It will be cold however, due to the outflow from the Fraser River, with temps in the teens (C), so we are taking due precautions in case we lose power. (God forbid!) One winter, we had an ice storm where we had to evacuate to a hotel in town for five days while power was restored. Hope it won't be that bad again!
