RMweb Gold Popular Post Oldddudders Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Smiffy - that looks bloody awful! But I'm glad you got the picture! I had hoped to be picking up Alison today. I have enough fuel - another joyous issue hereabouts - but she won't be allowed out. The angiogram proved clear, but as this is the second time she's been seen following a heart event where a particular enzyme was produced, they want to get to the bottom of it. Most of us would be grateful for such thoroughness, which might prolong our life, eh? Not so. Whinge, whinge, whinge. The food, a particular male nurse, boredom, just having to be there. I have suggested it might be better than leaping back onto the treadmill of life that put her there in the first place, but it is lost on her. Then there's her weight. She has added 10 kilos since the last heart event, was measured as 83 kg this morning. Mind you, when I first met her in 2013 she was 94 kg! I know she does a brisk hour's walk each day, or most, at least. And it is brisk, because occasionally I join her. More than 5km in an hour or slightly less is healthy stuff. But she doesn't eat properly. Three decent meals a day is the norm for most of us, but she tends to have a banana and a yoghurt or peach for brekkie, not much for lunch, and a fairly decent dinner with her sons. Sherry and I conclude that her body is storing food because it thinks it needs to. She won't be told, of course. As SM Mike has pointed out, Paris is chaos right now, with much of the public transport network - normally a model of fast transit - on limited service or out altogether. Even if I find a train to get me there, getting across to Gare du Nord may be a challenge, and Eurostar is running a reduced service. I am rapidly concluding that driving to the UK may be best - if and when Alison is fit enough to feed the cats. We live 13 km apart, and this job she has is taking up much of most days. She will take a day or two to get back to speed - assuming that the hospital lets her go at all! Sherry is appearing - in several different guises - in the TOADS production of Babe The Sheep-Pig this week. Audience numbers are disappointing, but I think the production is as everybody hoped it would be, despite a young leading lady whose demeanour off-stage is lamentable. I had hoped to be there for the Last Night, but....

I have met a few ugly women in my time. I recall one in particular when I went on a Club 18-30 holiday over 40 years ago. I managed to escape her clutches unlike one poor chap who she dragged into her room. That reminds me of a pretty sexist and definitely non-PC saying that was doing the rounds when I was a callow youth doing my flying training, "I've never slept with an ugly woman but I've woken up with a few." With apologies for hurting any sensibilities. Dave 5

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Morning all, Seems the editor was surprised by my earlier than normal presence here so I've had to clear it (him/her?). I forgot to mention in my tale of yesterday's doings that another highlight was a visit to SODC's official tip - actually an extremely well organised franchised operation - to drop off some light bulbs and a flourescent tube plus a load of batteries. But worry not this minor contribution to recycling (everything went into its allotted recycling area) is hardly likely to worry any folk folk trying to make us extinct or whatever they're rebelling about as it involved an off-route diversion of about 200 yards, complete with the sight of a Chinook flying about over Benson having seemingly lost (or not yet acquired?) its suspended load. Sorry to hear of Smiffy's troubles and that leg does not look nice but at least you can still use it pending full recovery. On the other hand the menus at 'The Q's place of Christmas dining look most appealing and unlike many places I can see that even I would actually be spoilt for choice on the starters. Somewhat handier than the place at Kemble I shall be dining at tomorrow which achieved (or rather its major brewery supplier achieved) the distinctly inconvenient feat of posting the wrong Christmas menu online so several of us chose things we wouldn't otherwise have selected. Fortunately in proper railway tradition we were able to amend things in a subsequent notice, I only hope they have taken note of our amendments. Sorry to hear that OD's trip is still vulnerable to amendment - i hope that things will drop into place to allow it to somehow happen even if it involves diversion and retiming. Have a good day one and all. 25
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Getting to the Christmas Dinner could be interesting, 55MPH Southerly forecast, against yesterdays 60MPH northerly... I thinks someone upstairs is intent on testing the Marquee.. Meanwhile last nights high tide went through with only minor flooding, just a few chalets had their land wetted, but not the Chalets themselves. The major system is now on it's cross check run, I'm just doing a couple of independant resistors that belong to the system. The visitors are due in 20 minute to this area, time for a last minute tidy up..
RMweb Premium Popular Post southern42 Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 ' morning all from red dragon land. Rather blowy this morning. Ray is giving a neighbour a lift down the village shortly, so he will pick up a few necessities in the garage shop round the corner - if you understand what "round the corner" means round here in the middle of nowhere - although in some countries, I guess, it would be considered to be "next-door." Still, it will save a longer trip through the forest worrying about fallen trees, branches, etc on the way to the big-store-outta-town. The wind is, supposedly, dying down about 3pm. I am still struggling (like lots of others it seems) with little oomph after the cold of 6 weeks ago, so dragging my feet over everything and trying to get some motivation to do the Christmas cards and such like. I knew I should have done them in the summer! Ah, well. Must make start... Keep plodding along, folks! _________________ Best wishes to all Polly
RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Q, is it ok to give dogs blue cheese? Not that it is liable to do them any serious harm but the results could be a bit messy. Talking of Stilton cheese, I found an unopened packet of Stilton hidden at the back of the fridge the other day. It looks perfectly OK despite a sell by date of 2017. Its wrapped in greaseproof paper so should be OK. Smiffy, sorry to hear of your accident and wishing you a speedy recovery. Ian, I hope you can make it back for Christmas despite the travel problems in France. C&C's wherever neccessary, be back later. 18 1

RMweb Gold Popular Post BoD Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Morning all. Today is being/will be spent putting up Christmas decorations. My comment “It’s too early” was met with a look that told me it will be done today. If I had my way we would still be collecting the tree with the turkey on Christmas Eve. I suppose I could put some Christmassy music on, after all I’ve just been reminded ‘tis the season to be jolly’. Ho, ho ho, then. 4
RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Morning all. Raining here. Dick’s cuts and bruises look nasty. I suppose checking the camera immediately after falling is a bit like looking at the state of the motorbike after falling off. For those accidents it often hurt more the next day. I only discovered pain relief gel (ibuprofen) in the last few years. Perhaps it didn’t exist back when I fell off bikes! I have to sort some clothes out so I can be tidy at the weekend. We are going to a wedding. We haven’t been to a wedding for a long time. The bride and groom were friends of Matthew. I am so slow at typing this it is afternoon now. I used to do all the Christmas cards but since retiring Aditi does them. Apart from the “oh goodness, guess who we forgot” list they are done. There don’t seem to be as many as before. Some of the people that we communicated with by card at Christmas seem to be in regular contact now via email or WhatsApp throughout the year. I don’t think we will be putting up Christmas lights or decorations. Matthew had a cuddly toy moose (named Chris) that can come down and sit in the lounge. We used to bring it down at Christmas and tell Aditi we were going to replace the fairy on the tree with Chris. This was purely to hear her say “it isn’t a fairy, it’s a Florentine angel”. Matthew referred to this as “one of Mum’s Hyacinth moments”. Tony 3
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Afternoon al from a bright and sunny Charente. Very sorry to see your scars Dick. I wish you well. Ian (OD) I also hope that things get sorted out. Here it is busy as usual. Beth is off for a check up at the hospital this afternoon. I am needed as interpreter and support as well as chauffeur. This morning I had my first ever CT scan to check that my aorta is behaving due to family history. I'd had ultrasou ds do e in the UK and everything looked fine but the new system wants to be sure. As to ugly people. I was once in charge of allocati g trainee detectives to i structors for their initial CID course. One day a really dreadful looking photo appeared on a booking form. A prank was played on the DI who's class she was going to. We got a photo of an absolutely stunning blonde from a previous course and swapped it. The DI even went strutting around showing his colleagues his new student's picture. Come the day when they all arrived the DI was sitting at a desk in reception. This lady approached and gave her name. The DI's face dropped then the penny as several of us in the know made hasty exits. Nowadays we would all have been on a discipliniary. It was worth it though. Regards to all. Jamie 20 1

Popular Post The Lurker
Greetings all from a wet and windy LBG. Good to see Smiffy back but that leg looks nasty. The LEA did phone back yesterday to tell me that the school we had chosen for Younger Lurker don't want him, which is a serious blow, It is the only school of suitable size and the ability to "steer" him into clubs where he might actually be able to do something other than wander around like a lost soul at lunchtime (which is what happens currently), It is his way of dealing with his anxiety but it can be a lonely existence. There may be a chance the school will change their mind, but we think it is likely that they are the only school thus far that has been honest about meeting the requirements of his EHCP. The state schools will be less scrupulous (if our current experience is anything to go by). Year end goes from bad to worse and now I have a whole load more work to try to fit in. Good job I am having beers this evening! 1

RMweb Gold Popular Post Shedman5 Posted December 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 10, 2019 Afternoon, Dark ,very wet and windy here but never mind, started to put a kit together I recently received as a present in the shed today, instructions about as clear as mud thus as useful as a chocolate fireguard ! However I have it sorted I think. Went to the local builders merchants and got a £1 bag of offcuts which I have chopped up into kindling, all fingers and thumbs still intact and booked my train for the trip to Model Rail Scotland in February so the day has been fruitful. As for Xmas tree lights well enough said but further down the road we have inflatable snowmen, reindeers and god knows what else occupying front gardens. So far none have been blown away in the wind............sadly says I, maybe I am turning into the Grinch! Hope those ailing feel better soon and enjoy what's left of the day. Popular Post Ian Abel
Smiffy, take care of that, you're heading straight into GDB territory with that amount of damage! Chewsday, and bloody cold! We ended up with only a couple more inches of snow time it stopped yesterday early afternoon... Yesterday evening enjoyed an excellent Cabaret committee party. Final totals announced, we made $314 shy of $100,000. Not bad eh?? The party was held at the new Intercontinental hotel right at the airport. The owner of this, and several upmarket hotels in the area, is both and parishioner and donor to most of our events. He arrived after the main course, provided desserts for the group and then gave us a tour of the place. Quite amazing, entire floor of meeting facilities and a couple of ballrooms, all state of the art with sound, lighting and drop down projection screens everywhere! We all decided we should have just stayed in the spa after we were shown it, rather than continue the tour, sadly that wasn't an option almost 300 rooms in total including a top floor of "presidential suites" almost as big as our house! Plenty of food, drink and good company, created a very nice evening Today will be dropping the Mrs off at work, as Bob has been invited to visit later. The young lady she works with is Bob's second family and they love seeing him when we can arrange it - I've not told Bob yet but I think he's getting an early Christmas present. -19 first thing, sunny and a light breeze making the wind chill around -23 supposed to reach -15 for the high... Carry on. 18 1
