We went to the New-York Historical Museum today.  They have a seasonal display of toy trains and related items. Lots of Lionel, but a good representation from other countries.  Even a large live steam LNWR loco.

As far as I can tell, everything was oolder than me.

 

My reaction to alcoholic drinks is that they take a neutral smelling grain and divide it into a nice smelling part which they feed to cattle and the other part that they sell to people.

Good morning one and all

 

Last night's concert was superb.  The Union Chapel is a truly remarkable venue, June and the Oysters were on form and I have three new CDs.  Despite what I had been told by the ticket agency, there were no tickets for me to collect but my name was found on the list and all was well.  My coat, suitably scrunched, made a good substitute for a cushion.  Andrew, thanks for the tip about the Brewhouse and Kitchen.  We have one in Bedford and Area Group meets there twice a year, though we shall have to move if the weekly quiz continues as it is too much of a distraction for our serious business.  In the end we decided to eat in the 'Spoons and paid less than we expected for fish and chips.  On the way home there were two trains for Bedford within three minutes.  We opted for the second and sailed past the first at Kentish Town.

 

Today I will start applying the stamps to the seasonal greetings cards.  This evening there are drinks at our local 'Spoons which may or may not attract fellow members of the LGBT group.  I won't be able to stay long as I am driving to Portsmouth early in the morning but at least I am showing my face.

 

As I type this there is a piece on the radio about meetings.  Once again it has been realised that they take up a lot of the working day and some appear pointless.  My working life ended in March 2006 and it was just the same then.  In vain did I protest that it was better to do the work than sit around talking about it.  I wonder what my e-friend Harry's take is on meetings?  He works for Amazon and from my dealings with him I suspect he does not suffer fools gladly.

My deepest sympathies, this company is fully into the above, have you come across Muda, Mura, Muri  yet? along with with various other Japanese words no one understands thrown in. it's the biggest waste of time and money ever invented. it becomes a big box ticking job with endless pointless meeting.. We are supposed to have them in our section... That's me and the Boss, So we just say we've had them and put a tick in the box..

Ben the desperate Collie Definitely wanted out this morning, straight to the nearest bush..

Slightly warmer but windier this morning, there appears to have been no more rain overnight..

 

The road outside the house is clear of mud though all that rain yesterday did it's stuff, as the concrete pan is now full of sugar beet I expect the road to be blocked by artics soon.

 

My Sailing compatriot seemed well, but is still in some pain and can't walk for long with the frame..

 

Coming in, I was distracted by 2 things. first at the mini roundabouts in Effin clown town, someone didn't go round the about and the Metal pedestrian barriers are badly damaged and sticking out into the road by 18 inches.

Second at the NDR / Wroxham round about a lorry turned right without indicating from the left hand lane.. taking I suspect 2 brown trousered cars who had been planning to go straight on from the right hand lane. I was lucky having entered from a different direction, being just behind and went behind the lorry to go on..

 

 

Time to... go and see the results of the cross check of the second major system.

Good moaning to all from a brightening but cool Charente.  Rick I hope that Sharron's improvement  continues and that your eyes stay OK Baz.  As to HH's eyes I think that he shoukd stop looking at green things with copper caps, he even thinks they lok nice these days.

 

Today I'm having a day off visiting and heading north for a model railway group meeting plus a tad of trainspotting at Poitiers. Alternative visitors have been arranged.

The helmeted children of the NFL made fools of themselves this evening with just eight seconds remaining in the Thursday night football game in Cleveland and the outcome in no doubt whatsoever. Just in case anyone is unsure, normally the helmets are intended to protect rather than attack.

 

Of course it's already on YouTube. The clip starts with the live broadcast. The most egregious close up details of the incident in replay, as broadcast, are around 1:00.

 

It will be interesting to see how the league responds to this tomorrow.

Bill: shame the organisations can't get their poop in a group. My specialist certifications and security clearances pass from one client to another with no issues. My employer doesn't hold the clearance to be able to hold my clearances. Go figure. Most of these clients are government alphabet soup departments. 

 

Chris: glad you enjoyed your night out. The Union Chapel is a fantastic venue apart from the seats. We saw Tangerine Dream there 2 nights in a row last year. Music buffs will know they were banned by the pope from ever playing in a Catholic church after the Reims concert in 1974. Since then they've been welcomed in other churches to play. 

 

Update on the cat: poor George is plugged up again. The attempts at unblocking him were unsuccessful so it is back to the vet this morning for a procedure to "dig out" the blockage. This is the 4th time in 7 years but the first since 2014 that he has undergone this. If it fails or happens again it will mean a resection to hopefully narrow the point where he gets bunged up. 

 

This is the 100th anniversary of my old scout troup. Both my parents were heavily involved with scouting and that is how they met. I went through from cub to rover and stayed on as a cub leader for several years. As part of the celebrations there will be a special dinner in January for past and present leaders. Looks like I may be flying to Calgary in just over 8 weeks.

Dull, dismal and damp here at Much Aching In The Back. Forecasts are that both the weather and The Back are set to continue in the same vein all day.

Apparently there are some domestic tasks that need doing and are,in fact, urgent. Hmmm, I'll have to think about that.

One interesting snippet from The Boss this morning is that she's just noticed that since we've had the artificial grass we no longer seem to get pigeons visiting and dumping all over the garden....and on that note I bid you farewell for now.

The sun is shining and the sky is blue with a few white fluffy things dotted about the horizon. As it’s a Friday that means I’ll be heading off to Asda and the Trafford Centre to get what I can’t get locally, I’ll also call at the butchers and collect the pies I ordered on Wednesday, which will be for tonight’s tea when we will be joined by James and Amelia. 

 

Hopefully I’ll have time to do a bit more soldering when I get back, there’s no need to pack everything away today as I don’t think Amelia will be at all interested in what I’m doing or want to play with anything on the table.

Just caught up with a blizzard of posts since my last visit - must be something in the water.

I am a (but not the) font of knowledge regarding Courage's brewery on the outskirts of Reading as I was one of the team that took it from brewing nothing to around 2.5 million barrels per year (1 barrel = 288 pints by the way). We only produced ONE beer worth drinking and that was a strong ale that sat on real hops for around 10 days and was called Bulldog. The Belgian market liked that in barrels, as did the Italian market but in the UK it was only sold as a bottled beer. We of course were never satisfied with that and would "blend" it with cask Directors, initially from teh old Reading town brewery but later from the Bristol brewery to make a very more-ish drink that gained additional properties, it would break the nervous control systems between brain, lips and toes! I preferred cask Courage Best to Directors for general drinking, particularly from our on-site sample room. The Berkshire Brewery as it was known had a heat recovery system that stopped the smelly plume of boiling worts leaving the coppers' flues and used the energy in that to heat water for brewing and general purposes. When it worked (which wasn't all the time), it was quite effective. Regarding p!ssed pigeons, the piles of spent grains contain very little in the way of sugars and certainly no brewing yeasts so any fermentation that occurs is likely to produce extremely rough alcohol that consumption by even the strongest of feathered friends would cause it to lose its senses. When I was a lad, part of my apprenticeship was at the former North British Loco Works in the Springburn district of Glasgow, next door to the Wm Teacher's bottling plant - talk about hair of the dog for the smells emanating from there! On to today's beers - Greene King IPA doesn't affect me too much but Timothy Taylor (which my taste buds prefer) sadly does.

I was part of the team that over saw the installation of all the kit into the Toyota factory at Burnaston, I was a maintenance engineer there for 12 years, it took a long time to get to understand the Japanese way of thinking and their system, let alone their language lol. Mata ato de.

Took up the carpet in the nursery.
Took up the carpet in Narnia (the other bedroom - we kept wardrobes in it, hence Narnia).
Ordered the Hattons Class 66.
 

A bit of a mixed bag of a week coming up too:

Saturday - Annual Leave
Sunday - Off
Monday - In
Tuesday - Off
Wednesday - In.  20 week baby scan.
Thursday - In.  Flu injection.
Friday - In.
Saturday - Annual Leave

 

Decided to forgo the Hornby Peckett for now as I splashed out on the sound 66.
Maybe will add the Peckett to my list for Father Christmas (a bit expensive for him (her!) though).

Damp and dismal here 

Awake at the crack of dawn 6am, painkillers and a hot milk allowed me to sleep till 9am.

I had a pile of paperwork from the Solicitors yesterday evening that needed printing off, the print turned turtle and packed up after putting in new inks 

rebooted it and it worked fine wish I hadn't bothered I spent 3 hours reading the whole lot so I could find the answers to questions half of them had already

been asked previously. PAH 

A visit to the new flat tomorrow a gas engineer is servicing the boiler I will have a good look round and take more proof photo's.

It is rather dull here, it isn’t raining (yet?).

I suspect there will be a brief trip to the shops later today. Probably for “click and collect” clothes rather than food. 
I don’t think I have seen tipsy pigeons but when we went to Canada we were told that the elk wandering around the railway tracks sometimes were when grain spillage fermented.

In contrast to the other weather reports here on ERs, it is a bright and sunny day here just now, although still with a cold northerly breeze.  Morning walk completed, albeit rather slowly as while on the beach, I caught up some friends out with their dog.  The dog is elderly and getting very slow, but still appreciated a bit of fuss and attention from me.

 

Next planned task is to oil and grease some of the window opening mechanisms around the house.  A downside of living very close to the sea is that the corrosion rate can be pretty fast due to the salt, if the mechanisms aren’t looked after.

I seem to have recovered sufficiently, so I'm now cooking lunch, or dinner for the rest of the gang. As it was, at the dentist's, I learned another patient for 10 am had cancelled on short notice, which made me think I might have been able to get up a bit later, had I known this. Oy vey!

 

Windy outside, rain predicted for the night, I gather. Maybe this'll keep things quiet during my shift, which will last from 2023 till 2846 hours.
