RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2019 Evening. Frazzled Fraggle again. I recall a decent pint of Tetleys in Leeds, Baz - talking of dives - the Lord Nelson in Holbeck. A friend's In-laws had it in the 80's-90's, beer was good. Pub was.....less so. Of course even Newcastle Brown is brewed elsewhere now. I recall a brewery visit (with the Institute of Personnel and Development - who said HR was all boring!) where they showed the separate water supply used to brew it, from a different reservoir apparently. So now it isn't, and is, well, crepe. I also have a reaction to a beer - Stones bitter gives me an awful headache. It's awful anyway of course, but was better than the alternative McEwans Best Scotch when I was but a lad, until I began to get the headaches. Beer here is sort of OK, Okells do a nice IPA, and Bushy's beers are good. I have to say that because Martin Brunschweiller allows the archery club Mrs NHN belongs to use his land! His beers are OK though, really. 4
RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 (edited) Evenin' each. Sainsbury's visited with no ill effects and beer cellar topped up - mainly with Pride. I was a committed Young's drinker for many years until they moved out of Wandsworth to Bedford and ruined it. Spent some time in The Shed after lunch and the new #### (B######n H2) run in on analogue with no problems and ran beautifully. Fitted a decoder - that was a mission as you need to remove the tender brake rigging, one set of wheels, stupid little plug thing that connects tender to ## ## and a couple of screws (one of which didn't want to come out) and then take body off gently and avoiding the lamp brackets, fit decoder and then do everything in reverse whilst trying to wiggle a couple of handrails which didn't want to go into miniscule holes before the body goes back on....and breathe. Put the whole shebang on programming track and check decoder is OK and then watch it run sweetly like a pile of carp. Why oh why do I bother? A.B. Outreadytogiveup. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Good evening from a dark Charente. All this mention of beer brings back many memories of Tetley's as the brewery was on our patch when I worked at Dewsbury Road. The best Tetley's was allegedly the stuff delivered by horse drawn dray when they had the shire horses. The Blooming Rose, Junction and I think the garden gate were all good, however Tetley's bitter gave me a headache but Mild was lovely. When attending sudden death's we could usually tell those that had been long term Tetley's Bitter drinkers from the state of the outside loo. It is alleged that one night in the mid 70's a drunk was arrested on Beeston Hill (He'd allegedly come out of the Malvern) and put in the back of the van. The officers then got diverted en route to another call that took an hour and a half to sort. By this time the drunk was showing signs of sobering up. The van driver's dad worked as a night security man at the brewery. A visit was duly made and some bottles were procured, two of them were allegedly, given to the drunk who thought that Christmases had come early. He was still well and truly drunk when he was finally booked in at the bridewell. I obviously cannot comment on the veracity of this story. RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Further news from the Charente Profonde. Beth has had a minor procedure and most of the abcess has been drained. However she needs to wait 48 hours for the results of the various tests. She seems to be doing OK. Joan (the widow) is doing fine and hopefully will get the death certificate tomorrow so hopes to fly home on Sunday. We had a delegation of two Gendarmes and the mayor this morning to sort out some details. The senior one is a lady Sgt or Chef. She was most touched when I gave her a set of British Sgt's stripes that I had spare. She then gave me a hug and kissed me on both cheeks. It's a hard life over here. After I visited Beth this afternoon, Joan and I went into the local town for Fish and Chips. Kids have all been rung and updated. Regards to all. RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Evening all. Just checking in to assure all that things are well here. SWMBO maintains the expected slow steady recovery and I grow older at the usual rate. I see numerous pages have appeared since my last visit. I’ll try to read and respond later. 2 1

Horrible! I really didn’t like beer until I left the Midlands. I went with my grandfather to Burton once. He wanted to get his haircut. I didn’t like the smell, I did like the little loco crossing the road near the brewery. I also remember being shocked at the awful racist remarks my Grandfather made in the barbers. I went and sat outside. I was really pleased to get back home. Tony
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2019 Aston Cross always had a bit of a strong atmosphere. Ansells Brewery and HP Sauce combining with Windsor Street Gas Works. No wonder my sense of smell isn't up to much, since working round there I can switch it off most of the time. 15
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Evening! visit to the eye specialist was interesting to say the least. Someone at the Trust has had the "consultants" in.. Kaizen notes, morning briefings, Performance boards but a paperwork trail used to track patients? (and every time you looked for the next patient paperwork it fell off the table and ended on the floor) bet they charged a lot to do no thinking at all.. if I had a piece of paper and a pen I could have sorted out the process routes.. the consultant pretended to be a nurse to get my vision test done and eye drops administered. He later walked me to a scanner, got someone to do the scan then checked it and said.."see you in 8 months".... Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2019 Our club room sin Dock Street in Leeds was next door to Tetleys Brewery. Out local (the Adelphi) was the dray mens local so the beer was OK. As a student I drank Tetleys dark Mild, Timothy Taylors, Sam Smiths but not Websters or John Smiths.. In the North east we drank Strongarm or any other real ale we could get! I have always had a problem with Newcastle Brown Ale..I prefer Sam Smiths Brown.. Nowadays I struggle with some of the "Craft" beers as they can be like Grapefruit Beer - and I hate Grapefruit! Now I need some shut eye so Goodnight all! baz

Random draw of teams and ours ended up first - I'm now £3.50 better off! Plywood wrangling was started - there is much to do and more shall be done tomorrow. Time to make some things DCC (& DC!) friendly. Catch up later. Cheers, Mick 20
Popular Post Simon G
I have spent an hour this evening looking at a layout and vast amount of stock that belonged to a modeller who recently passed away. There must have been nearly 100 locos, both UK and US, with a mix of DC and DCC. Providing a valuation is going to be a real task, as a lot of the locos were kit built, and a number apparently don’t work. The owners daughter (who I haven’t met) may have unrealistic expectations as she thinks it all could be worth around £10k. In my view, she will only get anyway near that by selling items individually on eBay or Facebook sites, which would be a long task. She may see what a couple of relatively local dealers will offer, which I suspect would come as a shock to her. 2 10

RMweb Premium Popular Post Dave Hunt Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Evening all. Haven't posted for a few days as I've been in headless chicken mode taking Dad to various medical appointments and making up for SWMBO's reduced mobility by doing all the shopping, cooking etc. as well as getting the study back into habitable and operational form after the decorator finished. However, today was relatively more relaxed as Dad has no more appointments for a while, SWMBO seems a bit better and this evening's catering was of the 'let's see what's in the freezer and cobble something together' variety. Hence I managed a few hours this afternoon wrestling with another three throw turnout and Dad joined me in the workshop making up some half track. Interesting to note HH's problem with the site: when I came on line today I found that it had deleted all the 'topics I follow' from the list so I have had to start all over again - most frustrating. Thoughts go to Jamie and Rick for recovery of their spouses, to Bill for the shabby treatment he has experienced, to Baz for his eye troubles and to all others suffering in any way. Have a peaceful and restful night everyone. Dave 8 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post PhilJ W Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Had a very good talk from Simon Kohlner with a greater insight about how he started with Hornby and what really went wrong between when he left and then returned to Hornby. I did ask him what was in the pipeline but he said that if he told me he'd have to kill me. I lived in Romford for some years opposite the brewery and the smell was sometimes overpowering but it got to the stage were most locals didn't notice it. The spent malt grains were left in heaps waiting to be collected and turned into cattle feed much to the delight of the local pigeons. Problem was the grains still contained alcohol and we found great amusement watching drunken pigeons trying to fly. 16
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted November 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 14, 2019 Good evening everyone Well the rain held off all day but it started to rain when I put the bins out around 7 o’clock. It wasn’t heavy rain, but thankfully it’s easing off a bit now. A few more MERG kits have been built today, 4 more input/output modules and then I made a start on the backplanes, these are the modules that the input/output modules plug into. I’ve never liked Stones or John Smith beers and I was never really keen on Tetley’s beer either. I never had any ill effects from any of them, I just didn’t like the taste. Goodnight all
