Morning all from Estuary-Land. Out shortly to the small exhibition at Wickford. Not that interested with a group of men playing with their funny shaped balls. A bit wet and windy here but predicted to pass over by lunchtime.

Good morning from a wet Didcot. Our Great Western Marrow is on the crawl through the station. I guess this where there are signalling issues. Also the electronic seat reservation system isn’t working as per other units that we saw whilst waiting at a Reading. Off to the Tiny Rebel brewery outside Newport so non High Wycombe show for us this year although we are hoping to be there next year with a new layout.

 

Now back up to speed west of Didcot.

Windy here. Very windy. But not yet gusting above 100mph as several friends have reported from Cornwall. 
 

The drained feeling of last night remains and is not being helped by waking up to discover gout at all four extremities. 
 

SWMBO is in pre-op fluids-only mode which she finds particularly challenging.

Afternoon oneandall,

 

Emergency brat sitting (and taxi driving for their parents) last night for four of the little dears that then got compounded when the fifth was left on his own so this GOS was sent to sit with him and the mutt until daughter and son-in-law got back  home (just before 1:30). Pandemonium reigned here this morning with the other four to be "entertained" which somewhat distracted from my enjoyment of the rugby. We have just got them all out through the front door. I managed to listen to the majority of the Saints v Harlequins match on the radio and felt, like the Radio Northants commentators, that we were lucky to get away with that when Quins should have made more of our many lapses in the second half. We may be top now but we will need to do better to remain there.

I am told that "we" will be attending the village fireworks later - we will probably be the oldest people there by some way. I have either that or enforced watching of some fifth-rate celebrities in sequins prancing / flouncing around so I lose either way - and I don't mean people associated with our defunct government and the media that surrounds them. At least I can sometimes bury myself in this stream of (in)sanity.

Afternoon Awl, 

Just back from Spalding,  at least part of the squealing is the power steering belt on full lock... I will further investigate tomorrow. 

I think the numbers of people at Spalding were down,  it wasn't as crowded as usual,  too many people watching egg shaped balls or put off by the forecast weather. 

 

Arrived early at Spalding,  so got to sit inside the entrance  well before opening time,  which was just as well,  as I went very dizzy,  nauseous  and a cold sweat. This had nothing to-do with me having my picture taken with the Hornby girls wearing the sprayed on jeans ( well they were that tight it looked that way). 

The ladies on the ticket desk got quite concerned about me. but I had recovered enough to wander slowly in when 10:00 arrived.

 

After my usual wander round the second hand stalls first, 3 wagons bought,  plus a look at PD Marsh, ( for border collies)   where I went dizzy again.  It's lucky his stand has substantial steel frames for me to hold on to,  after a slight recovery, I headed for the cafe,  intending on coffee bacon roll  and pink pills... Well the man in front had a full English , and err... So did I,  by the time that was consumed either the food or pills made me feel much better. 

 

So a tour of the layouts followed,  at the Grantham layout, I asked for Barry O,  who turned out to be the man standing next to the one  I asked..  So much for my observation of name tags.. We had a good mardle ( natter)  until Barry had to take his turn on duty.. 

 

Further layouts were inspected,  I was most impressed by the show this year, especially the selection of N gauge layouts , I fear I have more improvements to do to Tiree. 

 

After another coffee  I did a tour of retail  trades,  Just collecting leaflets or catalogues except for one N track cleaning wagon.

 

Favourite  4 mm layout  Grantham. 

Favourite  2mm layout Hartley Poole... 

 

At 14:00 I decided with the bad weather forecast  it was time to leave, roads even as busy as the A17, there was a good covering of leaves being blown off the trees. 

 

I've been home an hour now,  eyelid inspection is needed 

Time to źzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

One of those running around with (not after...) the missus days.  Found one road closed so had to go the long way around to the big city too, could have done without that.

 

My usual support to those in need, and a shudder regarding any medical eye work - I am not sure I could do that without some chemical assistance.  Like Ketamine.  I'm 'funny' about eyes.   Doesn't even have to be mine.  I did have to undergo some fiddling about a few..hmm....18 years ago as a condition was investigated, thankfully it wasn't what they had suspected which would have been much more unpleasant.

 

Just settling down now after a snatched hour in the garage but we're off out with Jayne for a Thai meal at the pub (the Ginger Hall if anyone knows FR) next to her gaff at 7.

 

'Klear'd a wagon as my first use of this stuff prior to fitting decals - it didn't really dry all that shiny - not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or that is 'how it is'?

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Quite a nice little show at Wickford, little is the word with only five layouts and one trader. Made a couple of small purchases of scenic items. Also there was a display about some of the local industrial railways including naturally the Salvation Army line at Hadleigh. I spoke to the guy who put it on and mentioned the McEwan-Pratt locomotive works which stood and indeed still stands within half a mile of where we were standing, he was completely unaware of its existance! Managed to dodge the worst of the showers, now its  fairly dry but still blowing a hooley.

A great day in and around Newport in a couple of Tiny Rebel bars plus the only Sam Smiths pub in Wales then a Newports first micropub.

 

Now back on a GWR Marrow and yet again no electronic seat reservations but plenty of spare seats so not an issue for us.

I am reconfirming my lack of enthusiasm for the rules of Rugby Union. I find it a messy, scrappy game with lots of arcane technical rules, though I will say a free-flowing try can be a beautiful thing to watch. Perhaps this is an opinion born in ignorance but the game of tiddlywinks in the first half of the present contest did much to reinforce the opinion.

 

In full disclosure, I was raised on Rugby League, my dad being a big fan. After I left, my school changed codes to Union to play against more posh schools. I was recently told they have switched codes back to League.

 

Of course these days (where I live in the US) there is very little televised Rugby of any code to watch and in the absence of other 'non-beautiful game' forms of football, I find myself watching a lot of American football, which I will stipulate has many, many arcane technical rules and does not flow, being a game of sprints with a lot of standing around in between.  I will no doubt watch some College football later in the day including contests between Beavers and Wildcats, and Ducks and Trojans, that will be closely followed by the locals.
