As Q says my Science lessons were all in SI units. I started these in 1968. Did you "learn" Imperial" measures in America? Baz I learned all the various systems in Scotland. FPS, CGS, MKS and SI. The UK has been teaching SI in schools for something around sixty years but that wasn't my point when I said "fully embraced". That was more to do with the fact the the UK is still using miles, not that there's really anything wrong with that. 14
Robert
Morning All, It is a rather damp morning in this part of the world. It is still raining quite heavily, but there are signs that the weather might be clearing up. Have a good day everyone... 10
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 25, 2019 Ey up! Fatchy pog here this morning. Hope the weather is better wherever you are. I hope GDB is Ok. From what I have seen in the Rugby there seems to be some confusion about the Laws. It was ever thus. My day will include tidying up, preparing for a visit to the Club tonight and.... Who knows? Positive thoughts to all who ail especially John, Sandy, Debs and our missing fighter pilot. Get that black dog chained up well Dave..would a 120mm Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Dispensing sabot round help?? Make the very most of your day! RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 25, 2019 There has one or two killed by failing to duck at bridges, I have lost a crewman overboard while under Potter bridge (coming from the other direction), we were hit from behind by another boat during the Three Rivers Race, he fell off the front and we were washed back up stream in the direction that motor boat is going. Speed through that bridge, yes it is quite common to go through at speed, if you get it right the boat squats into the water so you get more clearance. The broads are tidal, and you can get a 3 or 4 knot tide going in either direction through the hole. knowing the tides on the broads is most important.. Mooring awl, Inner Temple hare, 5 hours sleep, plus 1 .5 hours sleep not to bad a total.. We've had heavy rain but only for short periods, boats on roads were not required. Dad's back in hospital... for the third time he's gone in on a daytime visit, for something unrelated and collapsed while there. They are keeping him in overnight again, an ECG was clear... This weeks major system was completed yesterday, but they needed it on the old correction file last night, so it will have the cross check run this morning. The boss informed me that the company has deferred recruiting his deputy till after April, that will be over a year since we've had a deputy. Officially he retires 6 months after me, I'm going a year early, in 3 years time, and he's now planning to retire 6 months before me. This will give less than 2 years to recruit a deputy , train him to take over as replacement boss, then find another deputy, before I leave six months later.. There are probably only half a dozen people qualified to take over from him in the country, without the training. This could get extremely messy, I may go earlier, I'm not going to get involved with this mess . For your delectation the other low bridge between Wroxham and Hoveton, taken from the bridge pilot stopping point in Hoveton. Note the water is unusually low, and the big hire boats not stopping for the pilot. You can see from the third big boat the tide is coming in as it drags the boat side ways a bit before the bridge. In this case the boat was going too slow.. Time to... go do some work.. 10 4
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 25, 2019 Good morning. Some of our burnt garden carpet has started to turn green. Unfortunately it's mainly the weeds so far rather than the actual grass. We certainly needed the rain. No building work got done yesterday and thebuilder has just rung to say that he won't be coming today as more liquid sunshine is due after lunch. However the day was not wasted and I finally got a substantial timber top fixed on my new workbench. I now have two vices (be careful on the back row) to fit along with a drill press. Then the great tidy up of the area can take place. Today I'm off to the Danglies to collect a freezer. We were told yesterday that half a lamb will be ready for collection tomorrow so needs must. I hope that our travelling ER's get home safely and obviously warm thoughts to all others in need. Jamie 18
RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 25, 2019 Good morning everyone A dull but dry day so far, but we are forecast more rain during the day. Up a little late today, must have needed the rest. Breakfast has now been consumed and I will venture down to the cellar to complete the fixing of the skirting boards, I will then fill all the fixing holes and have a quick tidy up before finishing for dinner. Plans for the afternoon are a short rest before completing the school run to collect Evie and Max and then heading off to Vickie and Ian’s to pick up Ava. Then it’s back home to make tea. Enjoy the day, back later. 18

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2019 Norovirus outbreaks are the scourge of cruise-ships, I learned. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 25, 2019 Morning all from Estuary-Land. Persisted down last night but dry now. Sad news is that the Heaton Park heritage tramway is closed indefinately due to the theft of their overhead wiring. A fund has been set up to replace it but that will take time. Personally I think that the scrap dealer if found in possession of said wiring should be made to pay for the reinstatement of the wiring plus compensation for loss of business. Tea has been drunk, be back later. 5

Popular Post AndrewC
Good moaning from the boring borough. Bloody wet here. Crabtree has burgered off to sunnier climes. Just hope he didn't book on Thomas Cook. Not a fork of a lot happening here as usual. Work is work. The meetings in Edinburgh were cancelled at the literal last minute. If I'd received the text 2 mins later the train would have departed with me aboard. They are still getting charged for the return ticket. Got dragged into an all day workshop yesterday with 15 mins notice to cover for someone who was ill. Waste of time really as the spider phone in their office was shite and I couldn't hear half of what was being said. Another face to face workshop planned for Monday. (I'm on leave, D'oh!) I'm also up for a manglement position. Something I've managed to avoid, apart from a short period, for 39 years. We shall see. Not really interested but have to go through the motions in order to look good. Off now to the post office as there isn't a single post box in the area anymore. Then a fast surgical strike on the beer section of Tess & co. Laterz.
The Lurker
Greetings all from LBG where the sun is showing its face through the clouds at the moment. Work continues to be very busy - interruptions upon interruptions- and I am suffering because spreadsheet king has left and his successor and I cannot make all of them work properly, even with his handover instructions. We're being "radical". Does the macro save any time when you take into account the extra work it forces you to do and to maintain it when the underlying database info changes? If not, the macro goes. If so, can it be simplified? We're also building an internal system to try to make us MTD proof going forward. The IT side of that works pretty well; it's just the mapping from the accounting systems that needs to be done by the finance teams that isn't. It's amazing how many people get by with Saly* rather than understanding what it is they are doing and what the outputs are. Have a good day all * Same As Last Year 1

When we went to the Canary Islands last year that Captain, as part of the safety drill, did a public hygiene speech. Some passengers seemed offended. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted September 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2019 Good afternoon all, The rain currently isn't but it is promised to do a McArthur and will return, and return, and return, over the several coming days. It is however doing the runner beans a power of good (as well as the weeds and the jungle). We came across the hand gel sanitiser thing on our Hurtigruten trip and it struck us as an excellent idea in view of the way - as Ian said - norovirus can quickly get a grip (and even la grippe?) on lots of folk confined to a ship. Oddly the passengers hailing from the USofA seemed to regard it as an unnecessary interference and didn't like queueing for their 'hand gelification' before entering the dining room three times every day or when they had been ashore. Presumably it is also used on the big cruise ships as some of them have none too good records when it comes to norovirus outbreaks. I would agree entirely with Tony's views expressed above and what Matthew had observed - some passengers on the Hutrtigruten simply did not appear to understand some very basic factors when it came to personal/public hygiene. But infections happen on land too - such as the lad collecting a free issue of compylobacter on his way back from Morocco although he probably picked it from a meal in Spain or France so care is needed everywhere. His Austrian colleagues have now invited him to visit them again at the Graz establishment so presumably as the local beer did him no damage so he'll be off there again in a few weeks time. Enjoy the rest of your day one and all. 17

He said it wasn’t very nice but the other people in his room were very kind. Many of the other inhabitants (most were from Australia) were more interested in white powder that wasn’t frozen water. The hostel hot water failed. His two friends ended their relationship while skiing. Matthew was quite relieved to take the bus back to Calgary. Tony On our cruises hand sanitizer has been much in evidence at every entrance to dining areas. On a P&O one we did in 2007 they didn't allow passengers to serve themselves from the buffet for the first two days. Jamie 7
